Ultrastructure of the midgut and the adhering tubular salivary glands of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande)(Thysanoptera: Thripidae)
The ultrastructure of the midgut and the tubular salivary glands of Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera:Thripidae) is described. The microvilli have 2 different types of glycocalyx: in the anterior part of the midgut they are surrounded by a myelin-like membrane; in the posterior region, the microvilli have numerous rod-like projections arranged to form a continuous layer. Microfilaments longitudinally cross each microvillus; the microfilaments contain F-actin. Tubular salivary glands flank the midgut but do not fuse with it. The distal part of these glands have microvillated cells containing large amounts of electron-transparent material. The cells of the proximal part are lined with a thin cuticle
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Temperature analysis of the water supply system of a dairy company by means of a simulation model
Presence of antibacterial peptides on the laid egg chorion of the medfly Ceratitis capitata
Female reproductive accessory glands of the medfly Ceratitis capitata produce a secretion with antibacterial activity mainly ascribed to ceratotoxin peptides. To study whether the secretion from the accessory glands of the female protects the eggs and early larva from microbes, we examined whether ceratotoxins and other accessory gland components could be found on the egg surface. This was found to be the case; a water-soluble material with the same protein and antibacterial pattern as that of the accessory gland secretion was recovered from the laid egg surface and was observed as electrondense, clustered droplets over the outer exochorion. Such material showed the same electrophoretic pattern in both mated and virgin females. These findings indicate that the accessory gland secretion is spread, at oviposition, onto the eggs producing an antibacterial coating, irrespective of fertilization. This is the first report of antimicrobial components recovered from a material layered on insect laid eggs
Structural organization of the copulation site in the medfly Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae)
The copulation site of the medfly Ceratitis capitata was investigated at anatomical and ultrastructural levels. It consists of the anterior vagina, with a ventral fertilization chamber and a dorsal insemination pocket into which the two spermathecal ducts open. The fertilization chamber is an organ comprised of a number of alveoli that in virgin females are filled with a filamentous secretion, whereas in mated females contain sperm bundles. Through study of the internal morphology of the aedeagus, its position in the anterior vagina, and the direct observation of sperm transfer and storage, we confirmed that sperm are ejaculated through two gonopores at the top of the distiphallus and another at the base of the genital rod. The sperm flow dorsally into the insemination pocket and ventrally into the fertilization chamber. Sperm storage by spermatodoses in the spermatheca of Trioza alacris (Hemiptera, Psylloidea, Triozidae): a structural and ultrastructural study
Female insects generally store sperm received during mating in specific organs of their reproductive tract, i.e., the spermathecae, which keep the sperm alive for a long time until fertilization occurs. We investigated spermatheca morphology and ultrastructure in the psylloidean insect Trioza alacris (Flor,1861) in which spheroidal sperm packets that we refer to as spermatodoses are found after mating. The ectoderm-derived epithelium of the sac-shaped spermatheca that has a proximal neck, consists of large secretory and flat cuticle-forming cells. Secretory cells are characterized by a wide extracellular cavity, bordered by microvilli, in which electron-dense secretion accumulates before discharge into the spermathecal lumen. The cuticle-forming cells produce the cuticular intima of the organ and a peculiar specialized apical structure, through which secretion flows into the lumen. At mating, the male transfers bundles of sperm cells embedded in seminal fluid into the spermathecal neck. Sperm cells proceed towards the spermathecal sac lumen, where they are progressively compacted and surrounded with an envelope that also encloses secretions of both male and female origin. We describe the formation of these sperm containing structures and document the contribution of the female secretion to spermatodose or female-determined spermatophore construction. We also discuss the choice of the term spermatodose for T. alacris and suggest it be used to refer to sperm masses constructed in the female reproductive organs, at least when they involve the contribution of female secretion
Performance analysis of the water supply system of a dairy company by means of an advanced simulation tool
This work presents the result of a research project, concerning the development of a simulation model for a water supply system of a dairy company, located in Parma, Italy. The approach developed allows investigating, through process simulation, the plant areas where the efficiency of the water supply system can be significantly improved by means of some simple interventions. The final objective is to reduce the water consumption of the plant; this represents a relevant issue to the dairy industry. In line with this goal, at first the simulation model was used to reproduce the current (AS IS) system, so as to reach a precise knowledge of the water flows in the plant. In the second part of the work, a series of alternative (TO BE) scenarios was investigated, and the related performance was assessed, thus identifying the best plant configuration. The process simulator was designed under Microsoft Excel, programmed with Visual Basic for Applications. Thanks to the study implemented, an optimal scenario of the water supply system was finally identified, which allows savings up to 7.2% of water compared to the original configuration
