Interview with Maria Luisa Zamudio-Mainou, Class of 2004 and 2016
Get PDFOral history interview with Illinois State University alum Dr. Maria Luisa Zamudio-Mainou, Class of 2004 and 2016. The interview was conducted by Milner Library student employee Rexton Jones on July 10, 2023.
In the interview Zamudio-Mainou, formerly the executive director of the National Center for Urban Education at ISU, reflects on her educational and professional journey. Born and raised in Tampico, Mexico, she pursued an undergraduate education in her hometown before transitioning to a career in banking. In 2000, she moved to Bloomington-Normal to study English at ISU, eventually shifting into the Foreign Languages department’s literature and culture graduate program. After a year at ISU, a job opened up in the College of Education’s bilingual education program and Zamudio-Mainou found herself working with some 250 Spanish-speaking teachers from across Latin America. This sparked an interest in education, eventually leading her to pursue a PhD in higher education administration at the university.
In addition to the difficulty of learning English, Zamudio-Mainou also had to contend with cultural differences in the U.S. and the isolation of often being the only Latina in the room. She found a mentor in her graduate advisor and the director of the College of Education’s bilingual program, George Torres, with whom she would later collaborate on future grant projects.
Zamudio-Mainou has held multiple positions during her decades-long career at ISU, including working on a grant transitioning paraprofessionals into becoming certified teachers. She also engaged in teaching multicultural education courses and coordinating study abroad programs. Zamudio-Mainou\u27s dual roles provided her with a unique perspective, allowing her to work closely with underrepresented students while navigating administrative responsibilities. No full textEste artículo se enmarca en dos investigaciones realizadas por nuestro equipo de la Universidad de Flores Sede Comahue, en las que abordamos las concepciones de aprendizaje de estudiantes de Psicopedagogía en dos universidades: Universidad de Flores y Universidad Nacional del Comahue. Este trabajo propone realizar una revisión sistemática acerca de la investigación sobre concepciones de aprendizaje en estudiantes de educación superior en España y en Hispanoamérica, con el fin de describir los abordajes que de este tema se han realizado, desde qué enfoques teóricos y metodológicos, con qué sujetos y especificidades y a qué conclusiones han arribado en ellas. Se toma como directriz la Declaración PRISMA (2009). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Bicultural Living: Maria Luisa Mainou\u27s Experience with Immigration and Cultural Change
No full textThis poster focuses on the experiences of Maria Luisa Zamudio Mainou, a first-generation Mexican immigrant who lives in Bloomington, Illinois as a legal permanent resident. Maria Luisa enjoys living in the U.S. and retains a strong link to her Mexican heritage through artwork displayed in her home and close connections with her family in Mexico. Using photographs I took of Maria Luisa\u27s house and artwork, I show how she has integrated the legacy of her home country with her current lifestyle. The images also demonstrate the use of visual methods in ethnographic research. Maria Luisa\u27s story relates to a number of issues in anthropology that the poster briefly addresses, including the effects of transnationalism, immigrant replenishment, and kinship networks. She provides an insightful first-hand account of a bicultural perspective that integrates both the host and origin nations\u27 customs and languages while assigning equal value to both
