In tropical climates, the heat is the major factor limiting the production of broiler chickens, and is responsible for inducing a high mortality, especially in the finishing phase. The electrolyte balance (EB) and early thermal conditioning (ETC) are two techniques to alleviate the negative effects of heat stress. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the possible interactions and the effects of dietary electrolyte balance and application of early thermal conditioning of the feed intake (kg), body weight (kg), feed conversion (kg), mortality (%), energy bio-economic conversion index (Mcal/kg), moisture faeces (%), carcass weight (kg), body cavity fat (g) and breast color (L*a *b*) in cuts of chicken chronic heat stress conditions. Thus, the electrolyte balance (EB = K+Na-Cl) was set to 300 mEq / kg and electrolyte ratio (ER = [(K+Cl)/Na]) 3: 1 by non-linear PPFR program. They were housed 640 male chicks a day old, distributed in a factorial arrangement 2x2 (with and without ETC and with and without EB) in a completely randomizeddesign in 32 boxes (8 replicates per treatment). The thermal conditioning was applied on the fifth day old birds for 24 hours at 36 °C and only half of the batch (320 birds). After this period, all the birds were transferred to boxes (20 birds/box), with the bed waste acerola. Chronic heat stress (6 hours at 32 °C) was applied to all the birds of 35 after 39 days of age, being electronically monitored temperature and humidity of the warehouse, in relation to the microclimate of the area / height of the birds. The results indicated that: a) there was no interaction between the two techniques, EB and ETC; b) diets with EB resulted in more expensive ration besides increasing the moisture of faeces, but there was lower mortality; c) ETC resulted in a pale staining in breast samples. Thus, it can be concluded that both the EB and ETC are not effective for minimizing the negative effects of chronic heat stress in broiler

Two assays were conducted to evaluate the effect of biofertilizer suspensions applied to Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC. plants on Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) bioecology. In the first assay (residual effect), the following treatments were tested: a) Distilled water (Control); b) Biofert - biofertilizer produced in a single bioreactor; c) Biomix ? a mix of biofertilizers produced in four bioreactors; and d) Bio+VL - Biofert + Verticillium lecaniiI (Zimm.) Viégas. In the second assay (systemic effect) only two suspensions were tested: a) Biofert and b) Distilled water (control). In the first assay, the biofertilizer was applied once on the whole plant and mites were confined in arenas on both leaflets. In the second assay, the plants were sprayed weekly only in one leaflet and the mites were confined in arenas on the non-sprayed leaflet. In both bioassays, bioecological parameters related to survival and oviposition were evaluated. The biofertilizer effects on potential population growth during the first generation were measured by fertility life table parameters (net reproductive rate (Ro), mean generation time (T), doubling time (DT), intrinsic rate of increase (Rm) and finite rate of increase (). The biofertilizer had adverse effects on both survival and oviposition parameters. The net reproduction rates (Ro) were of 18.1; 12.9; 12.5 and 10.5 females/female (assay I) and 19.4 and 13.0 females/female (assay II), respectively for the treatments in the above-mentioned orders.

Measurement of the casimir force between 0.2 and 8 µm: Experimental procedures and comparison with theory

    No full text
We present results on the determination of the differential Casimir force between an Au-coated sapphire sphere and the top and bottom of Au-coated deep silicon trenches performed by means of the micromechanical torsional oscillator in the range of separations from 0.2 to 8 µm. The random and systematic errors in the measured force signal are determined at the 95% confidence level and combined into the total experimental error. The role of surface roughness and edge effects is investigated and shown to be negligibly small. The distribution of patch potentials is characterized by Kelvin probe microscopy, yielding an estimate of the typical size of patches, the respective r.m.s. voltage and their impact on the measured force. A comparison between the experimental results and theory is performed with no fitting parameters. For this purpose, the Casimir force in the sphere-plate geometry is computed independently on the basis of first principles of quantum electrodynamics using the scattering theory and the gradient expansion. In doing so, the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity of Au is found from the optical data extrapolated to zero frequency by means of the plasma and Drude models. It is shown that the measurement results exclude the Drude model extrapolation over the region of separations from 0.2 to 4.8 µm, whereas the alternative extrapolation by means of the plasma model is experimentally consistent over the entire measurement range. A discussion of the obtained results is provided

Abstract: This work studies the trajectory of the Shakespearean pseudonym “Caliban”, adopted by writer Henrique Coelho Neto (1864-1934) in the 1890s to convey licentious literature in print.
