Schermi. Immagini, corpi, condivisioni
In this book the author investigates the digital image proliferation of our times from an interdisciplinary point of view. Starting from the Visual Culture theoretical frame, Valentina Mignano explores the ways in which we interact with the screen, dealing with the "screen experience" in the first years of the network societ
The promise of liquid biopsy in cancer: a clinical perspective
The clinical utility of liquid biopsy in cancer treatment will increase as circulating tumor cells (CTCs) analysis move from the enumeration to the real-time measurement of tumor characteristics. Intratumor heterogeneity is becoming increasingly recognized as a major drawback to the shift to personalized medicine. Spatial and temporal heterogeneity might be reflected by the serial assessment of CTCs. Indeed, the developing technologies for CTCs analysis now allow digital genomic and next-generation sequencing approaches, able to differentiate molecular subtypes of the disease and to monitor genetic variation over time. The liquid biopsy of cancer might offer a real-time assessment of tumor biology, providing the opportunity to serially evaluate patients most likely to benefit from targeted drugs based on a dynamic characterization of the disease at the molecular level. Although hurdles remain before liquid biopsy is seen in routine clinical practice, the information derived from CTCs may facilitate the real-time identification of actionable mutations in cancer leading the way toward personalized medicine

Guido Crepax – Valentina – The Shape of Her Time
The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
Precision Medicine in Breast Cancer: Do MRI Biomarkers Identify Patients Who Truly Benefit from the Oncotype DX Recurrence Score® Test?
The aim of this study was to combine breast MRI-derived biomarkers with clinical-pathological parameters to identify patients who truly need an Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® (ODXRS) genomic assay, currently used to predict the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy in ER-positive/HER2-negative early breast cancer, with the ultimate goal of customizing therapeutic decisions while reducing healthcare costs. Patients who underwent a preoperative multiparametric MRI of the breast and ODXRS tumor profiling were retrospectively included in this study. Imaging sets were evaluated independently by two breast radiologists and classified according to the 2013 American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR BI-RADS) lexicon. In a second step of the study, a combined oncologic and radiologic assessment based on clinical-pathological and radiological data was performed, in order to identify patients who may need adjuvant chemotherapy. Results were correlated with risk levels expressed by ODXRS, using the decision made on the basis of the ODXRS test as a gold standard. The χ2 test was used to evaluate associations between categorical variables, and significant ones were further investigated using logistic regression analyses. A total of 58 luminal-like, early-stage breast cancers were included. A positive correlation was found between ODXRS and tumor size (p = 0.003), staging (p = 0.001) and grading (p = 0.005), and between BI-RADS categories and ODXRS (p < 0.05 for both readers), the latter being confirmed at multivariate regression analysis. Moreover, BI-RADS categories proved to be positive predictors of the therapeutic decision taken after performing an ODXRS assay. A statistically significant association was also found between the therapeutic decision based on the ODXRS and the results of combined onco-radiologic assessment (p < 0.001). Our study suggests that there is a correlation between BI-RADS categories at MRI and ODXRS and that a combined onco-radiological assessment may predict the decision made on the basis of the results of ODXRS genomic test

Micropatterning for the Control of Surface Cavitation: Visualization through High-Speed Imaging
For
the first time, we apply a high-speed imaging technique to
record the activity of acoustically driven cavitation bubbles (86
kHz) on micropatterned surfaces with hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes.
The width of the hydrophobic stripes lies between 3.5 and 115 μm.
This work provides the first direct visualization of the preferential
location of bubbles on the hydrophobic areas of the patterns. The
results confirm our previous prediction that surface cavitation strongly
depends on the surface energy of the irradiated substrate. The observations
show a remarkable effect of the stripe width on the size, movement,
growth, splitting, and multiplying of the bubbles. The high-speed
imaging also reveals that there is a minimal width of the hydrophobic
stripes that allows bubble attraction and formation. Our observations
are supported by a theoretical approach based on the forces acting
on the bubbles
