Use of multivariate factor analysis to define new indicator variables for milk composition and coagulation properties in Brown Swiss cows
The aim of this study was to elucidate the structure of relationships between milk yield, composition, and coagulation properties of Brown Swiss cattle. Multi- variate factor analysis was used to derive new synthetic variables that can be used for selection purposes. For this reason, genetic parameters of these new variables were estimated. Individual records on milk yield, fat and protein percentages, casein content, lactose per- centage, somatic cell count, titratable acidity, and pH were taken on 1,200 Italian Brown Swiss cows located in 38 herds. Factor analysis was able to extract 4 latent variables with an associated communality equal to 70% of the total original variance. The 4 latent factors were interpreted as indicators of milk composition, coagula- tion, acidity, and mammary gland health, respectively. Factor scores calculated for each animal exhibited coherent patterns along the lactation and across dif- ferent parities. Estimation of genetic parameters of factor scores carried out with a multiple-trait Bayesian hierarchical model showed moderate to low heritabili- ties (raging from 0.10 to 0.23) and genetic correlations (from −0.15 to 0.46). Results of the present study sug- gest the hypothesis of a simpler structure that controls, at least in part, the covariance of milk composition and coagulation properties. Moreover, extracted variables may be useful for both breeding and management pur- poses, being able to represent, with a single value for each animal, complex traits such as milk coagulation properties or health status of the mammary gland
Effect of genotyping density on the detection of runs of homozygosity and heterozygosity in cattle
Investigation of phenotypic, genetic and genomic background of Milk spectra in Sarda dairy sheep
Aim of this study was to analyse the genetic background of milk Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra in dairy sheep. Individual milk FTIR spectra, with 1060 wavenumbers each, were available for 793 adult Sarda breed ewes genotyped at 45,813 SNP. The absorbance values of each wavenumber was analysed using a linear mixed model that included dim class, parity and lambing month as fixed effects and flock-test date and animal as random effects. The model was applied to estimate variance components and heritability and to perform a genome-wide association study for each wavenumber. Average h2 of wavenumbers absorbance was 0.13 +/- 0.08, with the largest values observed in the regions associated with the characteristic bonds of carbonylic and methylenic groups of milk fat (h2 = 0.57 at 1724-1728 cm-1; and h2 = 0.34 at 2811-2834 cm-1, respectively). The absorbance values of wavenumbers were moderately correlated with the estimated heritabilities. After the Bonferroni correction, a total of nine markers were found to be significantly associated with 32 different wavenumbers. Of particular interest was the SNP s63269.1, mapped on chromosome 2, that was found to be associated with 27 wavenumbers. Genes previously found to be related to traits of interest (e.g. disease resistance, milk yield and quality, cheese firmness) are located close to the significant SNP. As expected, the heritability estimated for the absorbance of each wavenumbers seems to be associated with the related milk components
Association between a polymorphism at the Stearoyl CoA Desaturase locus and milk production traits in Italian Holsteins
Associations between stearoyl-CoA desaturase
(SCD) gene polymorphisms and milk production traits
(milk, fat, and protein yields, fat and protein contents,
somatic cell score) were investigated on a sample of 701
lactations of 313 Italian Holsteins. Test-day records
(5,097) were analyzed with a mixed linear model that
included the fixed effects of herd, date of test, parity,
genotype at the SCD locus, and lactation interval
nested within SCD genotype, and the random effect
of cow. An effect of the SCD genotype on milk and
protein yields was detected, with VV cows producing
more milk (about 2 kg/d) and protein (about 0.07 kg/
d) compared with AA cows. The contribution of the
SCD locus to the phenotypic variance of the 2 traits
was about 0.015. These results suggest a possible use
of the SCD locus in gene-assisted selection programs
for the improvement of milk production traits in dairy
cattle, although large-scale studies in different breeds
are required
Phenotypic and genetic characterisation of methane emission predicted from milk fatty acid profile of Sarda dairy ewes
Individual methane emissions are a potential breeding goal for selection plans aimed at improving the sustainability of ruminant farming systems. However, a large-scale recording of individual methane emissions is hampered by the high costs of the equipment and the logistics of the experiments. Equations have been developed to predict methane emissions in dairy cattle based on variables such as dry matter intake (DMI), gross energy intake, body weight and milk fatty acids (FAs) profile. No equations are currently available for dairy sheep. The aims of this study were: (i) to estimate the enteric methane yield (eMY, expressed as g/kg of DMI) and enteric methane intensity (eMI, expressed as g/kg of FPCM) of dairy sheep using equations developed for dairy cattle that consider as predictors milk FA; (ii) to evaluate the effect of stage of lactation, parity and month of lambing on eMY and eMI; (iii) to estimate the heritability of eMY and eMI. For this purpose, 964 individual milk samples from Sarda dairy ewes were analysed for milk composition and FA profile. Nine different equations were used to predict eMY and eMI. Values of eMY ranged from 19.4 g/kg to 20.4 g/kg of DMI, whereas values of eMI ranged from 15.1 g/kg to 21.0 g/kg of DMI, respectively. Stage of lactation was an important factor in the variability of eMY (p < .01). Indeed, this trait increased towards the end of lactation. Both eMY and eMI were negatively correlated with milk yield, lactose concentration and urea and positively correlated with fat concentration and NaCl, respectively. Heritability of eMI and eMY estimated using a single trait model was 0.13 ± 0.05 and 0.05 ± 0.04, respectively. The values of heritability estimated for eMY using a bivariate models ranged from 0.10 to 0.16 and they were higher than the value estimated for eMI. Results of the present study, even if based on prediction equations developed for cows, increased the knowledge about the phenotypic and genetic background of methane emissions in Sarda dairy sheep
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
