A Deep Neural Network for Simultaneous Estimation of b Jet Energy and Resolution
We describe a method to obtain point and dispersion estimates for the energies of jets arising from b quarks produced in proton–proton collisions at an energy of s=13TeV at the CERN LHC. The algorithm is trained on a large sample of simulated b jets and validated on data recorded by the CMS detector in 2017 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 41 fb-1. A multivariate regression algorithm based on a deep feed-forward neural network employs jet composition and shape information, and the properties of reconstructed secondary vertices associated with the jet. The results of the algorithm are used to improve the sensitivity of analyses that make use of b jets in the final state, such as the observation of Higgs boson decay to b b ¯. © 2020, The Author(s)
High prevalence of MTHFR gene A1298C polymorphism in Lebanon
Background: Mutations in the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene could reduce the enzyme activity and lead to hyperhomocysteinemia, a condition that has been associated with several vascular conditions, in particular, coronary artery disease and deep vein thrombosis. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of the two most common polymorphisms, C677T and A1298C, which have not been well studied in the Lebanese population. Methods: We randomly selected 205 healthy individuals originating from different Lebanese provinces and religious communities. The CVD StripAssay was used to test for MTHFR gene polymorphisms. Results: We found that for C677T, the prevalence of C-C, C-T, and T-T genotypes was 65.3percent, 30.8percent, and 3.9percent, respectively, with an overall carrier rate of 34.6percent and allelic frequency of 0.19. However, the A1298C genotypic prevalence of A-C, A-A, and C-C was 50.2percent, 25.9percent, and 23.9percent, respectively, with an overall carrier rate of 74.14percent and an allelic frequency of 0.49. Conclusions: Compared to all other populations reported so far, the Lebanese population harbors the highest prevalence of the MTHFR A1298C polymorphism. Measurement of electroweak WZ boson production and search for new physics in WZ + two jets events in pp collisions at s=13TeV
A measurement of WZ electroweak (EW) vector boson scattering is presented. The measurement is performed in the leptonic decay modes WZ→ℓνℓ′ℓ′, where ℓ,ℓ′=e,μ. The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV at the LHC collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The WZ plus two jet production cross section is measured in fiducial regions with enhanced contributions from EW production and found to be consistent with standard model predictions. The EW WZ production in association with two jets is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 2.2 (2.5) standard deviations. Constraints on charged Higgs boson production and on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in terms of dimension-eight effective field theory operators are also presented. © 2019 The Author(s
Measurements of properties of the Higgs boson decaying to a W boson pair in pp collisions at s=13TeV
Measurements of the production of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a W boson pair are reported. The W+W− candidates are selected in events with an oppositely charged lepton pair, large missing transverse momentum, and various numbers of jets. To select Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion and associated production with a W or Z boson, events with two jets or three or four leptons are also selected. The event sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9fb−1, collected in pp collisions at s=13TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016. Combining all channels, the observed cross section times branching fraction is 1.28−0.17 +0.18 times the standard model prediction for the Higgs boson with a mass of 125.09GeV. This is the first observation of the Higgs boson decay to W boson pairs by the CMS experiment. © 2019 The Author(s
Measurement of differential cross sections for Z boson pair production in association with jets at s=8 and 13 TeV
This Letter reports measurements of differential cross sections for the production of two Z bosons in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at s=8 and 13 TeV. The analysis is based on data samples collected at the LHC with the CMS detector, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 35.9fb−1 at 8 and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes ZZ→ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′−, where ℓ,ℓ′=e,μ. The differential cross sections as a function of the jet multiplicity, the transverse momentum pT, and pseudorapidity of the pT -leading and subleading jets are presented. In addition, the differential cross sections as a function of variables sensitive to the vector boson scattering, such as the invariant mass of the two pT -leading jets and their pseudorapidity separation, are reported. The results are compared to theoretical predictions and found in good agreement within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. © 2018 The Author(s
