This essay discusses the post-photography statement in terms of its most important concepts: the author, poiesis as a prescription of meaning, recycling as artistic strategy, serendipity and art’s social and political struggle. Even sharing the fundamentals of Fontcuberta’s decalogue, it is necessary to underline that problems of overproduction cannot be actually solved. Something more is needed: a structural relationship with postmodern philosophical problems; a suppression of unrecognized modern aesthetic foundations; and a deeper analysis of the properties of digital media and technologies. Moreover, the photographic point of view is too narrow to grasp all the aesthetic consequences of the described artistic postmodern conditions. As a conclusion, some different hypotheses concerning uncommon theoretical and artistic practices are discussed.

Criticisms of digital art: Foundations and theoretical limits

    No full text
This article attempts a critical examination of the actual digital art production, posing key questions about its artistic value inside the contemporary esthetic discourse, including the relationships with the art system. Considering the properties of the numeric language, two important topics will be discussed: the dialectic artwork-process and the meaning of digital multimedia. With the support of up-to-date computational creativity theories and the evidences of experimental digital art, the treacherous influence of the romantic aesthetic paradigm and the traditional art system will be tested. As a possible solution, the author suggests rethinking the components of software as meta-medium, such as its information assets, its algorithms, the code textual properties, interactivity and interfaces. In the conclusions it will be stressed that the immateriality of software is paramount to avoid misunderstandings and to open new fields of research. For instance, natural computation, ethnomathematics and ethno-computing are valuable social and educational contents and meanings that could substantially improve digital art

Contributions to the understanding of Bayesian consistency.

Consistency of Bayesian nonparametric procedures has been the focus of a considerable amount of research. Here we deal with strong consistency for Bayesian density estimation. An awkward consequence of inconsistency is pointed out. We investigate reasons for inconsistency and precisely identify the notion of “data tracking”. Specific examples in which this phenomenon can not occur are discussed. When it can happen, we show how and where things can go wrong, in particular the type of sets where the posterior can put mass.Bayesian consistency; Density estimation; Hellinger distance; Weak neighborhood

On consistency of nonparametric normal mixtures for Bayesian density estimation.

The past decade has seen a remarkable development in the area of Bayesian nonparametric inference both from a theoretical and applied perspective. As for the latter, the celebrated Dirichlet process has been successfully exploited within Bayesian mixture models leading to many interesting applications. As for the former, some new discrete nonparametric priors have been recently proposed in the literature: their natural use is as alternatives to the Dirichlet process in a Bayesian hierarchical model for density estimation. When using such models for concrete applications, an investigation of their statistical properties is mandatory. Among them a prominent role is to be assigned to consistency. Indeed, strong consistency of Bayesian nonparametric procedures for density estimation has been the focus of a considerable amount of research and, in particular, much attention has been devoted to the normal mixture of Dirichlet process. In this paper we improve on previous contributions by establishing strong consistency of the mixture of Dirichlet process under fairly general conditions: besides the usual Kullback–Leibler support condition, consistency is achieved by finiteness of the mean of the base measure of the Dirichlet process and an exponential decay of the prior on the standard deviation. We show that the same conditions are sufficient for mixtures based on priors more general than the Dirichlet process as well. This leads to the easy establishment of consistency for many recently proposed mixture models.Bayesian nonparametrics; Density estimation; Mixture of Dirichlet process; Normal mixture model; Random discrete distribution; Strong consistency

Domestication and divergence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae beer yeasts

Whereas domestication of livestock, pets, and crops is well documented, it is still unclear to what extent microbes associated with the production of food have also undergone human selection and where the plethora of industrial strains originates from. Here, we present the genomes and phenomes of 157 industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeasts. Our analyses reveal that today's industrial yeasts can be divided into five sublineages that are genetically and phenotypically separated from wild strains and originate from only a few ancestors through complex patterns of domestication and local divergence. Large-scale phenotyping and genome analysis further show strong industry-specific selection for stress tolerance, sugar utilization, and flavor production, while the sexual cycle and other phenotypes related to survival in nature show decay, particularly in beer yeasts. Together, these results shed light on the origins, evolutionary history, and phenotypic diversity of industrial yeasts and provide a resource for further selection of superior strains

What drives the adoption of SHRM in Indian Companies?

Managerial innovation and its critical importance in today's global business is well documented. The crucial role of managerial innovation in strategic human resource management is becoming increasingly prevalent in both business and academic literature. However, practically no such study has been undertaken in an emerging country scenario as India. This study identifies the drivers of adoption of innovative strategic human resource practices (SHRM) in Indian organizations. This study is of critical importance against the backdrop of the liberalization of the Indian economy which started in 1991. The structural adjustments due to liberalization have created a hyper-competitive and turbulent environment. Drawing from both innovation and SHRM literature this research report discusses five main propositions of adoption of innovative SHRM practices in Indian organizations. The generalisability, applicability, acceptability, and the diffusion of practices are discussed.Strategic planning; HRM; Innovation; India
