    No full text
Analyses of cases contained in the Register of inquisitor Jacques Fournier (1318-1325) allude to the difficulty of a suspect leaving the inquisitorial trial without a sentence in the form of penitence. Having in mind the sentiments of contemporaries regarding the trials and the current multidisciplinary scholarship on the subject, the author investigates the changes Fournier that made in the system, through analysis of three cases least-related to heretical dogma. The author came to the conclusion that: 1) early centralization of medieval France facilitated alterations of the inquisitorial process, 2) the inquisition started regarding heretical certain deeds (and often even thoughts) that had previously not been considered heretical, by linking simple unacceptable behaviour to elements of heretical beliefs

    Force transmission in migrating cells

    No full text
During cell migration, forces generated by the actin cytoskeleton are transmitted through adhesion complexes to the substrate. To investigate the mechanism of force generation and transmission, we analyzed the relationship between actin network velocity and traction forces at the substrate in a model system of persistently migrating fish epidermal keratocytes. Front and lateral sides of the cell exhibited much stronger coupling between actin motion and traction forces than the trailing cell body. Further analysis of the traction - velocity relationship suggested that the force transmission mechanisms were different in different cell regions: at the front, traction was generated by a gripping of the actin network to the substrate, whereas at the sides and back, it was produced by the network's slipping over the substrate. Treatment with inhibitors of the actin - myosin system demonstrated that the cell body translocation could be powered by either of the two different processes, actomyosin contraction or actin assembly, with the former associated with significantly larger traction forces than the latter.

Marcel Fournier : Concerning the influence of French sociology in Quebec. More than a mere analysis of the interactions and exchanges between social scientists communities, this study, dealing with the respective international position of two scientific communities, consists in the analysis of the functions of the frequent borrowings from French sociology made by the French Canadian social scientists. The author attempts to demonstrate that, within the last ten years, the Quebec sociological field has won a greater autonomy in regard to the American and French sociological writings : the signs being the increasing rate of quotations of local social scientists writings and the number of professors in social science who were trained in local universities. Fournier Marcel. Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club

    No full text
MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him. This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director

This study aims to examine the representation of father domination and the role of autobiographical fiction in resisting the father domination. This study attempts to address two issues: 1) The representation of name-of-the-father domination in a novel, and 2) the narrative resistance to the domination through autobiographical fiction in a novel. The novel used as research as research here is Jean-Louis Fourniers Il A Jamais Tué Personne, Mon Papa. The analysis is using qualitative descriptive technique. The novel was analyzed using Lacanian psychoanalysis regarding the notion of name-of-the-father, Bourdieus theory of domination, and Austins autobiographical fiction concept. The study found that 1) there is the domination of name-of-the-father on Jean-Louis Fournier (the I figure, narrator, and the author), and 2) the resistance towards the domination is showed through autobiographical fiction genre
