Culturally relevant literacy practices: a case of a Brazilian emergent bilingual
This study examines the case of Anita, a Brazilian emergent bilingual, studying and living in the United States. It highlights the critical issue of culturally relevant literacy learning in and out-of-school, focusing in Anita’s, her parent’s and teachers’ perspectives on literacy and culturally relevant literacy practices, asking: What are the practices and resources considered culturally relevant for supporting second language literacy learning of the Brazilian emergent bilingual participating in this study? This study investigates the different perspectives on literacy and literacy practices for different participants. It examines how participants’ notions of culturally relevant literacy practices shape their practices and affect the participating child experiences with literacy in different contexts (e.g., classroom to classroom and home vs. school).
I framed this study based on sociocultural views of learning and teaching (Freire, 1972; Street, 2000; Vygotsky, 1978). The analysis of the data shows that participants conceptualized literacy, and culturally relevant literacy practices, from mainly two perspectives: “Inside-out,” that is, from children’s social worlds and needs; and “Outside-In,” emerging from “outside ” features from the institution and its demands. Based on these perspectives parents and teachers facilitate literacy practices and determine which literacy practices are relevant. Discrepancies between these practices produced certain tensions for the child and for the family.
In this case, I suggest ways in which researchers, administrators, policymakers, and teachers might begin to think of “culturally relevant” literacy practices. I highlight the importance of understanding the children’s social worlds and their “funds of knowledge” (González, Moll, & Amanti, 2005; Moll, Amanti, Neff, & González, 1992). I discuss the necessity of being aware of individuals’ conceptualization of literacy and, thus, relevance because the concepts individuals hold about literacy and relevance undergird the ways they experience and facilitate literacy, and most importantly, the ways they socialize children into practices they judge relevant. I argue that the “Inside-out” concept of literacy can be a starting point for critical understating of culturally relevant literacy practices for children from different cultural backgrounds. The “Inside-out” way of conceptualizing culturally relevant literacy could be a common ground between what schools see as relevant to teach and what and how parents see as relevant for their children to learn.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2017-05-01The student, Vivian Carla Felicio, accepted the attached license on 2015-04-16 at 11:45.The student, Vivian Carla Felicio, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2015-04-16 at 11:46.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2015-04-17 at 13:27.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #7895 on 2015-07-22 at 14:24:44Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T22:45:22Z (GMT). Evaluation of noise occupational exposure in activities that involve communication through headsets and headphones.
New electronic technologies have improved the communication systems in general ways, and consequently sound devices have become better, cheaper and widely used. In the professional field, millions of workers use every day headsets and headphones talking to clients, transmitting information and news to control centers, and also listening music. It is a common practice among telephone operators, telemarketing attendees, pilots, musicians, police officers, etc; also, young people using modern sound and video players with individual speakers. If on one side the communication systems are much better, on other way the sound pressure levels inside of headsets or headphones are a big concern, especially when people are listening their favorite songs. Sometimes the sound levels are so high that anyone around is able to listen its music. It is a fact very known that the acoustic energy may destroy the cochlea cells after long noise exposures at high levels. Therefore, million of users of those electronic apparatus are exposure to a potential hearing loss risk in spite of experimenting pleasure moments or just doing their job. The problem of hearing losses is more complicate to headset or headphone users because there is not criterion very well established as it is common to general workers. The standards for prevention of hearing losses are addressed to environment noise that is measured outside of the auricular pavilion. The technology applied to measure sound levels inside of auricular pavilion is complex and there are a few instruments available in the market. However, the most important limitation is absence of technical criteria that define which acoustic situations could be considered a hearing loss risk. Considering all these limitations, this paper has the following objectives: review technical articles that present evaluations of noise inside of auricular pavilion; demonstrate that published studies in this matter are embryonic face to complexity and costs involved with; identify the most appropriate standard to evaluate noise levels inside of auricular pavilion. Thus, the Material and Methods adopted in this paper are based on a comparative review of the literature available, including results from experiences developed by the own author, and other data published by several experts. The numbers, records and levels, etc presented here are related to the respective methods or criteria. Therefore, the information, data, discussion, analyses, and conclusions presented in this paper are addressed to motivate new studies and debates that may result in a new national or international standard easier and less expensive than those are complied today. New proceedings should be developed with clear instructions that avoid misunderstanding and guide different practitioners to reproduce studies with similar methodologies. Concluding, this paper introduces important parameters that are necessary to evaluate noise generated by headphones in workplaces, and, also, gives some guidelines and subsidies to develop a measuring procedure or a technical standard related to occupational hygiene in this matter

Conclui-se que o trabalho do artesão é fonte inesgotável de realização de sua individualidade, na medida em que o artesão consegue acolher, em seu íntimo, as limitações da matéria-prima onde imprime sua vontadeThis is a study about the artisans imagination captivated in the pre reflexive zone of being, that is, in a psychological space before the rational mode of thinking where it roots the artisans individual complexity that characterize his work. Through interviews with and observations of the artisans in their working place, on search for the creative imagination, in the field of labor and doing experience, born from the attentive intimacy between the artisan and the raw material that he had chosen, because of its resonance with his individuality. One come to the conclusion that the artisans work is an inexhaustible wellspring of individual fulfillment as the artisan is able to shelter in his innermost the limits of the raw material where he prints his wil
This essay aims to discuss the political role of artistic and fictional articulations in the resignification of the Rwandan genocide in The poisoned apple (2013), by the Rio Grande do Sul author Michel Laub, and in dialogue with the project Untitled (newsweek), by the Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar (1994). With this, we will establish a de-fronteirized look that seeks the consonance between theory, fiction, and politics in order to broaden the theoretical scope in the interpretation of discursive practices within literary and cultural studies.

LARGE SCALE FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION BY NATURAL AND NATURE-BASED FEATURES: A SPATIALLY DISTRIBUTED INVESTIGATION OF WAVE PROPAGATION OVER SALTMARSHES
This work is embargoed by the author and will not be publicly available until May 15, 2025.Coastal areas provide a favorable setting, not only for the establishment of prosperous urban and economic centers but also for highly productive ecosystems. Yet, these regions are often exposed to natural flood hazards. Coastal floods are one of the most common and devastating natural hazards, annually causing significant loss of property, habitat, and human lives. These events are usually aggravated when associated with the further landward propagation of highly-energetic wind-waves which can expose infrastructure to unprecedented wave loads, cause large morphological changes due to sediment transport, as well as, disrupt the coastal vegetation. Moreover, damages caused by coastal flood hazards are expected to double by the end of the century due to climate change and sea-level rise, thus forcing current coastal management and engineering projects to account for these future scenarios. In this context, this study proposes the development of a comprehensive assessment of large-scale (i.e. statewide) wave and saltmarsh interactions during extreme flood events for current as well as future climate change-based scenarios. To meet this research goal four research objectives were defined: i) to identify coastal wetland exposure to maximum water depths and wave heights during major hurricanes using state-of-the-art methods for regional hydrodynamic and wave modeling; ii) to develop an effective tool for representing large-scale, spatially distributed wave transformation processes, including wave attenuation by vegetation; iii) to quantify the influence of sea-level rise driven marsh-migration on the overland hydrodynamic and wave processes during storm surge events; iv) to project the current and future coastal protection provided by saltmarshes composed of native and invasive marsh species. This study is based on the coupled ADvanced CIRCulation model (ADCIRC) and Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) numerical model forced with spatially distributed Global Climate Model (GCM) wind and pressure products, during storm surge events for simulating total water levels and significant wave heights over coastal wetlands. This research also includes the coupling of the hydrodynamic and wave model ADCIRC+SWAN with the marsh migration and land transformation Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM) to account for future wave attenuation by vegetation for IPCC Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) based sea-level rise projections. In order to assess the influence of saltmarsh distribution as well as the predominance of native or invasive species on coastal hazard impacts, the aforementioned framework was implemented using explicit vegetation formulations. The present study stands out for being the first to implement an explicit, data-based, large-scale numerical modeling wave attenuation study. The research outcomes provide important insights for the future implementation of coastal management and engineering measures for protecting coastal habitats, communities, and infrastructure.2025-05-1
Geography and Literature: The representation of Goiania in fragments of living is slowly Brasigóis Felicio
The starting goal of this study case is to go through a path that has been built
between the geography and the literature by the piece of work analyses: Viver é devagar .
For a theoretical basis, this work dealt with the geographic categories of place, landscape,
urban space, and time to the social representation theory. In the literary work Viver é
devagar , the author, as a spectator and actor, takes over the urban space in Goiânia . Place
is his starting point, and landscape is his narration object. The narration begins in his lived
place in a metropolis. The conceptual structure of this work starts from a symbolic dimension,
because it refers to cognitive contents that allow a person to be someone who knows and
interprets the reality. The author demonstrates the representations of affective life, values,
believes, knowledge, dreams, hopes, and expresses a way to communicate to the world that
surrounds him through literature. The methodology that best fits this research is the
qualitative one. Thus, in this work, the researcher became a spokeswoman to the Felicios
chronics. She constant tried to reveal what is implicit in the author s city. A question arises:
Does the literary work that has been studied offer enough categories and concepts to represent
the social historic process in Goiânia ? To answer to this question, several geographers and
authors from different areas were studied to establish a dialog through readings, reflections,
interpreta a realidade.
literatura
Formation of thermochemistry concepts in the middle of STSE relations and socioscientific issues: contributions of the Theory of Historical-Cultural Activity
This work focuses on an old and still current problem observed in school education: the rupture between the disciplinary contents taught in school and the life of the student outside it. The student is deprived of a knowledge form that makes him aware of his reality as an active author of his history and of human history. This problem is reflected in Science Education being many the proposals that seek to provide the student a critical understanding of scientific knowledge. Among them we share intentions with those that aims to include social issues of the student\'s reality in science classes, such as the CTSA perspective (relations between science, technology, society and environment). The initial motivation for this work is set in the search for a theoretical foundation that can help us to understand how the human process of knowledge appropriation happens, and, from this understanding, to organize a chemistry class that surpasses the said rupture. In this direction, we assume this theoretical foundation in the Historical-Cultural Activity Theory establishing, as the thesis objective, to analyze the process of thermochemistry concepts formation in the middle of questions of the student historical and social context mediated by STSE relations and socio-scientific issues. The research focused on the process of applying a teaching activity, elaborated and applied in a pre-vestibular course of Popular Education movement of Ribeirão Preto city, located in the São Paulo state. The teaching activity was developed from a critical socio-environmental perspective in relation to the production and use of fuels by man, and all the speeches of the students were recorded during the activities, through the use of strategically arranged cameras to collect the audio during the activities, as well as developed textual productions, analyzed from some theoretical-methodological references of the Theory of Historical-Cultural Activity. The analysis results shows that the process of thermochemistry concepts formation in the student\'s historical-social context is determined by the activity structure and movement, which depends on the activity preparation and mediation by the teacher. The concretization and systematization, the generalizations, the appropriations and significations are mediated processes. It is important to consider, in the teacher\'s mediation, the spontaneous concepts of the student to provide concreteness to the scientific concepts. In both classroom and text interactions, the appropriation of concepts occurs through the union of a real human need with a chemical concept. The concept whose fundamental forms of action (operations) are not executed by the student has a reduced development. The CTSA aspects and socioscientific issues, coordinated by the structure and movement of the teaching-learning activity, serve as instruments to provide the interaction between the chemical knowledge and the student socio-historical context
The Sociology of the Sociology of Octavio Ianni : the reasons for the criticism and the criticism of reason in social thought
This research sought to highlight the role played by Octavio Ianni in the drafting of the "critical sociology" in Brazil. From the study of his "Sociology of Sociology" exposed to various articles and books by the author was observed as the Brazilian sociologist was articulating the theoretical and methodological work of a very vigorous debate and intellectual scene in the country. The research associates such success as well as the intellectual core adjunct to the University of São Paulo, from the late fifties with a design that advocates sociology as "scientific self-consciousness of reality." By promoting a 'Sociology of Sociology " the sociologist stresses the need for the social sciences to think not only social reality but also to themselves, the conditions in which new knowledge is produced, the choices of the researcher, etc. Octavio Ianni organize a coherent program, which emphasized the character "not neutral" in sociological thought, but a perspective beyond the political and ideological reductionism that would have characterized the excessive politicization of sociological production in Latin America between the years sixty and eightyMestradoSociologiaMestre em Sociologi
