Freud, Lacan and Witz : the dimension of the pleasure and the significant
To Jacques Lacan, the Witz technique is the same as the significant technique. Regarding the Witz, the french author considers that the significant technique has a more essential dimension than the pleasure dimension. However, for Sigmund Freud, the main characteristic of the Witz is the pleasure production. An analysis of the pleasure concept, going through its mechanism in the Witz, besides a study about the relationships between the lacanian significant and the freudian Witz, will enable us to have a broader comprehension about the importance of those two dimensions. The evidence of a kind of ¿silence¿ from Lacan about the ¿economic¿ aspect of the pleasure certainly will help us to clarify his position. We sustain howsoever that, even though we recognize the importance of the significant dimension, the pleasure, according to Freud¿s approach, does not lose its main dimension in relation to the Witz and its relationships with the unconsciousDoutoradoEpistemologiaDoutor em Filosofi
Activin A increases invasiveness of endometrial cells in an in-vitro model of human peritoneum
The aim of this study was to investigate whether activin A has an effect on the attachment and/or invasion of endometrial cells in a modeled peritoneum in vitro. Cultured endometrial stromal cells (ESCs) and endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) were treated with activin A (6.25-50 ng/ml) and with activin A (25 ng/ml) with and without inhibin A or follistatin. Fluorescent labeled cells were added to confluent peritoneal mesothelial cells (PMCs) and to a monolayer of confluent PMCs grown in a MatrigelTM invasion assay. The rate of endometrial cell attachment and invasion through PMCs was assessed. The expression of cell adhesion proteins N- and E-cadherin was evaluated with real-time RT-PCR. Activin A (25 ng/ml) promoted invasion of the endometrial cells through the modeled peritoneum (>2-fold versus control) and this effect was partially reversed by inhibin A and follistatin. Activin A had no effect on the rate of attachment of the endometrial cells to the PMCs or in the rate of proliferation. In addition, activin A induced a decreased mRNA expression of E-cadherin in cultured EECs. In conclusion, activin A increases invasion of EECs and ESCs into modeled peritoneum. In EECs, this effect may be related to down-regulation of E-cadherin expression. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the role of activin-A in the genesis of the endometriotic lesion. © The Author 2008.
In this article is attempted to discuss the aesthetic category of taste in relation to the joke. Important and particularly interesting is also the extent to which the author may go to amuse his recipients and whether he succeeds despite violations of all sorts of possible rules and standards in making the audience laugh. These considerations are covered in the sketch examples from Was guckst du? and Mensch, Markus! However, the question about the boundaries of good taste still remains open, because the interpretation of each text, also the humorous, has no objective character and is always subjective.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Improvements for an ALERT-type vehicle-based control system are described. The improvements encompass the use of a multiple control unit architecture for more efficient processing of user interface functions and device commands. The improved architecture allows one control unit to manage the control functions for a first device set. The second, or subsequent, control unit offloads the management of device control functions from the first control unit. Devices and methods are also described for incorporating the control system into a vehicle data bus, such as the IDB.U
What really matters? The elusive quality of the material in feminist thought
The concept of the 'material' was the focus of much feminist work in the 1970s. It has always been a deeply contested one, even for feminists working within a broadly materialist paradigm of the social. Materialist feminists stretched the concept of the material beyond the narrowly economic in their attempts to develop a social ontology of gender and sexuality. Nonetheless, the quality of the social asserted by an expanded sense of the material - its 'materiality' - remains ambiguous. New terminologies of materiality and materialization have been developed within post-structuralist feminist thought and the literature on embodiment. The quality of 'materiality' is no longer asserted - as in materialist feminisms - but is problematized through an implicit deferral of ontology in these more contemporary usages, forcing us to interrogate the limits of both materialist and post-structuralist forms of constructionism. What really matters is how these newer terminologies of 'materiality' and 'materialization' induce us to develop a fuller social ontology of gender and sexuality; one that weaves together social, cultural, experiential and embodied practices
