ATLAS : B physics reach: prepared for 4th international symposium on LHC physics and detectors (LHC 2003) held in Batavia, Illinois in May 2003.
The current scope and status of the ATLAS B-physics trigger and of off-line performance studies are presented. From the initial running at low-luminosity at LHC, high-statistics B analyses will allow sensitive tests of possible new physics contributions by searching for additional CP violating effects and for anomalous rates of rare B-decay channels. In the physics of the B0s meson system there is sensitivity to mass and width differences and to a weak mixing phase beyond the Standard Model expectation. ATLAS will also be able to access rare B decays using the high-luminosity running. Measurements of beauty production sensitive to higher order QCD terms will also be made, providing new data to investigate present inconsistencies between theory and experiment
Charmonium and beauty physics programme in ATLAS
ATLAS early J/ψ results are presented. Selection strategy for J/ψ at early beam conditions, mass determination method explained and obtained precisions discussed. Kinematic properties of J/ψ with early selections compared to MC expectations. First performance results with J/ψ discussed. Short overview of B-physics program, with examples of ear;y and advanced studies given
ATLAS B-physics potential
Studies since 1993 have demonstrated the ability of ATLAS to pursue a wide B physics program. This document presents the latest performance studies with special stress on lepton identification. B-decays containing several leptons in ATLAS statistically dominate the high- precision measurements. We present new results on physics simulations of CP violation measurements in the B/sub s//sup 0/ to J/ psi phi decay and on a novel ATLAS programme on beauty production in central proton-proton collisions at the LHC. ATLAS potential for beauty physics measurements
The main focus of ATLAS b physics has traditionally been on the standard model. In the last few years also the aspects of new physics in B-decays has been addressed. Another new field of studies started recently is a beauty production. We give an overview of the older as well as more recent results. After an introduction outlining selected trigger and detector performance characteristics, we explain methods and goals of CP violation measurements in decay channels of B-d(0) meson, physics of B-s(0) system and of rare decays. Finally, the ATLAS program for beauty production measurements is presented
Algorithms for the ATLAS High Level Trigger.
Following rigorous software design and analysis methods, an object-based architecture has been developed to derive the second- and third-level trigger decisions for the future ATLAS detector at the LHC. The functional components within this system responsible for generating elements of the trigger decisions are algorithms running within the software architecture. Relevant aspects of the architecture are reviewed along with concrete examples of specific algorithms and their performance in "vertical" slices of various physics selection strategies
