Marking the Condottiere\u27s Dynasty: The Saletta Delle Dame of the Martinengo-Padernello

In c. 1539 the condottiere Girolamo Martinengo of the Padernello branch had a frescoed interior painted for the celebration of his marriage to Eleonora Gonzaga of Sabbioneta and Bozzolo. The painted room, known as the Saletta delle Dame, is located at the Palazzo Martinengo-Padernello in Brescia, Italy, and depicts the portraits of eight women believed to be from the Martinengo and Gonzaga families. By considering primary archival sources, on-site field research done by the author and secondary sources, this thesis examines the intended function of the interior through historical and social context. Research is presented that explores the function of the interior and the suggested identities of the portraits and compares the Saletta to other well-known interiors located in the Venetian terraferma. The location of the Saletta delle Dame in Brescia, on the periphery of Venice and Milan, a geographically underrepresented region in scholarship, prevents the Saletta from being a widely recognizable example for Renaissance interiors. This research contributes to the study of the Saletta and art located in peripheral geographic locations

Site effects in Saletta damaged area of Amatrice municipality (Central Italy) after the 24th august 2016 earthquake

This work presents the results from numerical analyses in the damaged area of Saletta hamlet (Amatrice municipality), aiming at discussing factors leading to the observed damages after the 24th August 2016 Mw 6.0 earthquake and the following aftershocks. The area of Saletta was in fact highly ravaged by the first earthquake and during the whole seismic sequence. Geological-technical detailed field investigations were combined with an Electrical Resistivity Tomography and several noise measurements for better evaluating the main geological-morphological variability over the study area. Following insights from the reconstructed geological setting, a continuous coring borehole was drilled and a down-hole test performed together with a passive 2D small array and an active 1D MASW measurement. All these data were used to obtain the subsoil model for the numerical analyses that were carried out using both 1D and 2D approaches, including linear and equivalent linear ones, aiming at evaluating site effects

Exploring Semi-bent Boolean Functions Arising from Cellular Automata

Semi-bent Boolean functions are interesting from a cryptographic standpoint, since they possess several desirable properties such as having a low and flat Walsh spectrum, which is useful to resist linear cryptanalysis. In this paper, we consider the search of semi-bent functions through a construction based on cellular automata (CA). In particular, the construction defines a Boolean function by computing the XOR of all output cells in the CA. Since the resulting Boolean functions have the same algebraic degree of the CA local rule, we devise a combinatorial algorithm to enumerate all quadratic Boolean functions. We then apply this algorithm to exhaustively explore the space of quadratic rules of up to 6 variables, selecting only those for which our CA-based construction always yields semi-bent functions of up to 20 variables. Finally, we filter the obtained rules with respect to their balancedness, and remark that the semi-bent functions generated through our construction by the remaining rules have a constant number of linear structures

The following essay explores the theme of remembrance as a question of identity in Doron Rabinovici’s novel Suche nach M. The Austria Jewish author concentrates on the quest for self-determination through various means, which are determined by generational differences. While the generation of survivors sees remembrance of the Holocaust as a moment of silence, their children commemorate it through masquerades or carnivals. Rabinovici’s novel, with its emphasis on a collective search for identity, is an exemplary contribution to Holocaust literature as a re-elaboration of Jewish cultural biblical tradition

Heuristic search of (semi-)bent functions based on cellular automata

An interesting thread in the research of Boolean functions for cryptography and coding theory is the study of secondary constructions: given a known function with a good cryptographic profile, the aim is to extend it to a (usually larger) function possessing analogous properties. In this work, we continue the investigation of a secondary construction based on cellular automata (CA), focusing on the classes of bent and semi-bent functions. We prove that our construction preserves the algebraic degree of the local rule, and we narrow our attention to the subclass of quadratic functions, performing several experiments based on exhaustive combinatorial search and heuristic optimization through Evolutionary Strategies (ES). Finally, we classify the obtained results up to permutation equivalence, remarking that the number of equivalence classes that our CA-XOR construction can successfully extend grows very quickly with respect to the CA diameter

The Authors analyzed the modifications of some components of salivary microflora (S. mutans, Lactobacillus and yeasts) induced by orthodontic treatment. This one is able to modify the oral microflora, increasing cariogenic microorganisms concentrations in plaque and saliva. Our results demonstrated a high caries risk for the subjects of the experimental group; this data suggest the need for a critical evaluation of preventive protocols applied to the orthodontic patients
