Is Felix Salten the author of the Mutzenbacher novel (1906)? Yes and no
Josefine Mutzenbacher oder die Geschichte einer Wienerischen Dirne von ihr selbst erzählt, published in Vienna in 1906, represents one of the most fascinating cases of attribution of authorship in German literature. Although Josefine Mutzenbacher is usually attributed to Felix Salten, the author of the world-famous Bambi (1923), the novel’s authorship has never been confirmed, and many other candidates have been named as potential authors. Among them is Arthur Schnitzler, who published Reigen, a cycle of amorous adventures in Viennese society, in 1903. Some scholars, instead, have attributed the novel to such lesser-known writers as Ernst Klein and Willi Handl. The controversy surrounding the authorship of Josefine Mutzenbacher was the starting point for our stylometric analyses, and our results help to answer some unresolved questions in a debate that has lasted for more than 100 years. The analyses were performed using the R package Stylo, which enables an efficient application of Burrows’ Delta and its variants. Focusing on both the entire text and on the final pages, two different types of analysis were carried out: one combines 1200 different stylometric methods to compare the candidate authors Salten, Schnitzler, Bahr, Altenberg, Hofmannsthal, Klein and Handl; the other verifies the attribution using the ‘impostors’ method. The results show that the most probable author is Felix Salten, while none of the candidates could be identified as the author of the final pages, confirming the hypothesis that the text was left unfinished by Salten and completed by an as-yet-unidentified ghost-writer

Tanto Giacomo Leopardi como Giuseppe Mazzini são há muito conhecidos pelo público de língua portuguesa (sendo que entre os primeiros tradutores de Leopardi estava até Fernando Pessoa, e I doveri dell’uomo de Mazzini foi traduzido já em 1861 com o título Os Deveres do Homem). Entre os séculos XIX e XX, um poeta italiano tentou condensar, em uma síntese extremamente original, suas mensagens, que, apesar das aparências, eram tão diferentes. Estamos falando de Clemente Rebora (1885-1957), um dos escritores mais habilidosos e eficientes da época. Leopardi deixaria sua marca indelével no artista Rebora e Mazzini, no homem Rebora (levando-o ao Cristianismo). Na redação deste ensaio, recorremos às obras tanto do autor quanto de seus dois mestres, mas principalmente à valiosa correspondência (publicada em três volumes pelas edições Dehoniane de Bolonha, sob a supervisão do estudioso e sacerdote Carmelo Giovannini), um instrumento insubstituível para reconstruir a biografia, o pensamento e o sentir do poeta.Se sia Giacomo Leopardi che Giuseppe Mazzini sono da lungo noti al pubblico di lingua portoghese (fra i primi traduttori di Leopardi ci fu persino Fernando Pessoa, mentre I doveri dell\u27uomo di Mazzini fu tradotto già nel 1861 col titolo Os Deveres do Homem), tra XIX e XX secolo è vissuto in Italia un poeta che ha provato a condensare, in originalissima sintesi, i loro messaggi, pure all\u27apparenza tanto diversi. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, an Italian poet lived who attempted to condense their seemingly different messages into a highly original synthesis. We are talking about Clemente Rebora (1885-1957), one of the most skillful and efficient writers of his time. Leopardi would leave his indelible mark on Rebora the artist, while Mazzini would influence Rebora as a man (leading him towards Christianity). In the composition of this essay, we drew upon the works of both the author and his two mentors, but especially on the invaluable correspondence (published in three volumes by the Dehoniane editions of Bologna, edited by the scholar and priest Carmelo Giovannini), an irreplaceable tool for reconstructing the poet\u27s biography, thought, and feelings
A Software Pipeline for the Reception of Italian Literature in Nineteenth-Century England. Preliminary Testing
This paper presents and discusses a project design aimed at producing synthetic and intuitive visualizations of the reception of Italian literature in nineteenth-century England. In the first part, a processing pipeline is described which combines software in optical character recognition (OCR), named entity recognition (NER), topic segmentation, and sentiment analysis. In the second part, the feasibility of the project is preliminarily tested: (1) by evaluating the quality of the possible corpora (on a sample of 23 texts) and discussing methods for further improving the OCR; (2) by comparing the results obtained by free software (e.g. OpenNLP, ANNIE, NLTK, Stanford CoreNLP) on the sample corpus. The outcomes suggest that, while the project is realizable with the already available resources, a further training of the software on an annotated corpus may substantially improve the quality of the results

Magris Likes it Bad? Reflections on Ethics in a European Perspective
This essay examines Claudio Magris's literary production from the point of view of European normative ethics by drawing on recently-proposed theories of negative empathy and the hybrid hero. A brief overview of Magris's narratives and characters-from Illazioni su una sciabola (1985) (Inferences from a Sabre, 1991) to Croce del Sud) [Southern cross] (2020)-shows his peculiar interpretation of such theories and how he repurposes them for ethical goals. This is followed by a close reading of Un altro mare (1991) (A Different Sea, 2017) which presents in detail the narrative and stylistic devices adopted by the author to establish an emotional connection with readers that can stimulate empathic identification together with critical thinking. Finally, the essay demonstrates the central role of Magris's work in a European ethical framework with the support of empirical evidence in the study of reading experience, combined with theoretical claims of several modern philosophers and literary scholars, including, among others, Martha Nussbaum, Stefano Ercolino, Massimo Salgaro, and Benjamin van Tourhout
