A logical approach to represent and reason about calendars

    No full text
We propose a logical approach to represent and reason about different time granularities. We identify a time granularity as a discrete infinite sequence of time points properly labelled with proposition symbols marking the starting and ending points of the corresponding granules, and we intensively model sets of granularities with linear time logic formulas. Some real-world granularities are provided to motivate and exemplify our approach. The proposed framework permits to algorithmically solve the consistency, the equivalence, and the classification problems in a uniform way, by reducing them to the validity problem for the considered linear time logic

Additive or Conventional Manufacturing as spare parts manufacturing technology: the impact of qualification tests

    No full text
Additive manufacturing (AM) has recently emerged as a potential breakthrough technology in the world of spare parts management. Thanks to its characteristics, it can enable the production of spare parts with very low production lead time, with considerable impacts in terms of inventory levels. Some researchers have recently focused on the topic, trying to understand whether it is convenient to produce spare parts in AM or in Conventional Manufacturing (CM) techniques. However, all these works neglect a crucial aspect. Spare parts, before being utilized, need to be qualified from certified entities. The qualification requirements vary depending on the criticality of the spare parts, but they are all associated with non-negligible costs, which however have been completely neglected so far. In this work, to overcome this gap we develop a mathematical model that can support managers and practitioners in choosing the most convenient manufacturing technology (i.e. AM or CM) considering for the first time the qualification costs. The model proposed has been applied to a real case study to demonstrate its applicability. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors

An efficient requirement-aware attachment policy for future millimeter wave vehicular networks

    No full text
The automotive industry is rapidly evolving towards connected and autonomous vehicles, whose ever more stringent data traffic requirements might exceed the capacity of traditional technologies for vehicular networks. In this scenario, densely deploying millimeter wave (mmWave) base stations is a promising approach to provide very high transmission speeds to the vehicles. However, mmWave signals suffer from high path and penetration losses which might render the communication unreliable and discontinuous. Coexistence between mmWave and Long Term Evolution (LTE) communication systems has therefore been considered to guarantee increased capacity and robustness through heterogeneous networking. Following this rationale, we face the challenge of designing fair and efficient attachment policies in heterogeneous vehicular networks. Traditional methods based on received signal quality criteria lack consideration of the vehicle's individual requirements and traffic demands, and lead to suboptim..
