Dynamic entrepreneurial capabilities: an innovative path to innovation in entrepreneurial settings
No full textThe aim of this paper is to examine how a small entrepreneurial firm
can achieve successful product innovation and technology change
by substituting the traditional drivers for innovation with dynamic
capabilities. We used a longitudinal case study methodology to
investigate a seven-year technology innovation undertaken by
Vetromed, a small Italian entrepreneurial firm, from its decision,
in 1999, until its successful implementation, in 2006. On the basis of
our findings, we introduce the concept of dynamic entrepreneurial
capability, defined as a higher order ability to enact and integrate
three substantive entrepreneurial capabilities, namely: distributed
entrepreneurial insights, entrepreneurial heuristics and entrepreneurial
flexibility. Our findings suggest that dynamic entrepreneurial capability
can substitute for the traditional drivers of innovation, allowing small
entrepreneurial firms to pursue successful innovation

Companies need to own particular structural characteristics (physical and decisional) able to encourage innovation. In this direction, the present paper, proposes a multiple dimension exploration of firms’ strategic factors to encourage product innovation process: the firms 'strategic internal assets and the firms 'strategic decisional assets (patterns of product innovations). This work also contains an empirical analysis devoted to verifying the relation between strategic factors and product innovation in the semiconductor industry, using a dataset we call the SEMI PROD dataset

and undergoing significant transformations due to the reduction of public investments in local networks
for innovation, whereas they are assuming a growing importance in modern economy. In such a scenario,
this paper analyses the evolution path of innovation and technology transfer processes, focusing
on the new actors and roles that are emerging. In particular, the “hybrid role” played by Universities
– more and more involved in the diffusion and exploitation (not only creation) of knowledge – is discussed.

No full textTechnology change and entrepreneurial capabilities: evidence from etched glass industry - The aim of the paper is to investigate how a given entrepreneurial firm can substitute the traditional innovation resources (R&D investment, patenting competences and specialized human capital) and what kind of different resources can be deployed in order to achieve a technology change. To point out the role of these particular resources we introduce the concept of dynamic entrepreneurial capabilities, and distinguish it from substantive entrepreneurial capabilities, two concepts which shall underpin our findings. We chose as research setting the Italian glass industry since it has always had a prominent role in defining new technological dominant design for the whole worldwide glass industry. This paper presents a longitudinal study carried out in the Italian etched glass industry. We observed a small Italian firm, Vetromed, for a 7-year period after its decision to implement technology change. Our findings suggest that Vetromed innovated its technology by developing and integrating three dynamic entrepreneurial capabilities, defined as higher order abilities, namely: distributed entrepreneurial insights; entrepreneurial heuristics; entrepreneurial flexibility. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
