The Sisters Materassi by Aldo Palazzeschi: between Avantgarde and Tradition
The subject of this thesis is a presentation of a work of art, The Materassi Sisters novel, written by an Italian writer, Aldo Palazzeschi, in which the author focused, in a remarkable way, to the class structure of Italian bourgeois society during the beginning of the 20th century. The introduction of this work guides through the life's career of the author in the historical and artistic context, briefly describes and characterizes his entire artistic production, and the way of thinking and seeing the world, in which the author moved and worked. This work contains also an outline of the trends of the futurism artistic direction, to which the author was invited at one time of his artistic creation and the ideas of which he joined. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the period of experimental novels of the author, that preceded The Materassi Sisters novel. The main part is devoted to the analysis of the Palazzeschi's novel, The Materassi Sisters, which represents the peak of his literary and artistic creation

New insights and best practices for the successful use of Empirical Mode Decomposition, Iterative Filtering and derived algorithms
Algorithms based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Iterative Filtering (IF) are largely implemented for representing a signal as superposition of simpler well-behaved components called Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). Although they are more suitable than traditional methods for the analysis of nonlinear and nonstationary signals, they could be easily misused if their known limitations, together with the assumptions they rely on, are not carefully considered. In this work, we examine the main pitfalls and provide caveats for the proper use of the EMD- and IF-based algorithms. Specifically, we address the problems related to boundary errors, to the presence of spikes or jumps in the signal and to the decomposition of highly-stochastic signals. The consequences of an improper usage of these techniques are discussed and clarified also by analysing real data and performing numerical simulations. Finally, we provide the reader with the best practices to maximize the quality and meaningfulness of the decomposition produced by these techniques. In particular, a technique for the extension of signal to reduce the boundary effects is proposed; a careful handling of spikes and jumps in the signal is suggested; the concept of multi-scale statistical analysis is presented to treat highly stochastic signals
Model identification of a network as compressing sensing
In many applications, it is of interest to derive information about the topology and the internal connections of multiple dynamical systems interacting together. Examples can be found in fields as diverse as Economics, Neuroscience and Biochemistry. The paper deals with the problem of deriving a descriptive model of a network with no a-priori knowledge on its topology. It is assumed that the network nodes are passively observed and data are collected in the form of time series. The underlying structure is then determined by the non-zero entries of a “sparse Wiener filter”. We cast the problem as the optimization of a quadratic cost function, where a set of parameters are used to operate a trade-off between accuracy and complexity in the final model

O ano de 2024 marcou duas datas importantes na literatura italiana: os 90 anos da publicação do romance Sorelle Materassi (1934) e os 50 anos da morte de seu autor, o florentino Aldo Palazzeschi (1885-1974). E, para comemorar esse romance popular que pertence à fase da maturidade palazzeschiana, o presente artigo pretende lançar luz sobre uma de suas muitas peculiaridades: a inspiração advinda dos clássicos italianos, especialmente toscanos, no primeiro capítulo de Sorelle Materassi. Visamos identificar a presença de grandes mestres como Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio e Alessandro Manzoni no primeiro capítulo da prosa palazzeschiana, por meio de passagens de suas obras mais famosas. Essa presença parece corroborar nossas impressões de que Palazzeschi, autor visionário, soube mesclar, em várias nuances, os clássicos que o inspiraram na composição de seu estilo único, imbuído de ironia e sarcasmo, imprimindo assim sua marca registrada, o humor, em uma história atemporal de duas irmãs bordadeiras, famosas e bem-sucedidas que se veem descontroladas diante da presença masculina do sobrinho órfão.Il 2024 ha segnato due date importanti per la letteratura italiana: il 90° anniversario della pubblicazione del romanzo Sorelle Materassi(1934) e il 50° anniversario della morte del suo autore, il fiorentino Aldo Palazzeschi (1885-1974). Per celebrare questo romanzo popolare, appartenente alla fase della maturità di Palazzeschi, quest’arti-colo intende mettere in luce una delle numerose peculiarità dello scrittore, ossia l’ispirarsi ai classici italiani, in particolare ai toscani, nel primo capitolo di Sorelle Materassi. Ci proponiamo di individuare la presenza di grandi maestri come Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio e Alessandro Manzoni nel capitolo di apertura del romanao di Palazzeschi, attraverso passi tratti dalle loro opere più celebri. Questa presenza sembra corroborare le nostre impressioni sul fatto che Palazzeschi, autore visionario, abbia saputo mescolare, con diverse sfumature,i classici a cui si ispirava nella composizione del suo stile unico, intriso di ironia e sarcasmo, imprimendo così la sua cifra personale, ossia l’umorismo, a una storia senza tempo di due famose sorelle ricamatrici di successo che si ritrovano fuori controllo alla presenza maschile del nipote orfano.The year 2024 marked two important dates in Italian literature: the 90thanniversary of the publication of the novel Sorelle Materassi (1934) and the 50thanniversary of the death of its author, the Florentine Aldo Palazzeschi (1885-1974). To celebrate this popular novel that belongs to the phase of Palazzeschi’s maturity, this article aims to shed light on one of its many peculiarities: the inspiration drawn from Italian classics, especially Tuscan ones, in the first chapter of Sorelle Materassi. We aim to identify the presence of great masters such as Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, and Alessandro Manzoni in the first chapter of Palazzeschi’s prose, through passages from their most famous works. This presence seems to corroborate our impressions that Palazzeschi, a visionary author, knew how to mix, in various nuances, the classics that inspired him in the composition of his unique style, imbued with irony and sarcasm, thus imprinting his trademark, humor, on a timeless story of two famous and successful embroidering sisters who find themselves out of control in the face of the male presence of their orphaned nephew
Sewing the fate of the Materassi Sisters: a partial commented translation of Aldo Palazzeschis novel
Em ocasião da comemoração dos 90 anos da publicação da primeira edição, a presente dissertação visa a oferecer uma tradução comentada dos primeiros capítulos do romance Sorelle Materassi (1934), a principal obra da fase de maturidade do escritor florentino Aldo Palazzeschi (1885-1974). O interesse em Palazzeschi parte do ponto de que, apesar de ser um dos nomes mais importantes do Futurismo italiano e do Novecento, a produção literária do autor é quase desconhecida no Brasil. Além disso, por meio do estudo da obra, possibilitada pela tradução, buscamos analisar mais a fundo a escrita peculiar de Palazzeschi e elucidar os desafios enfrentados e as soluções encontradas ao longo do processo tradutório, baseando-nos nos princípios delineados por Umberto Eco (2007). Este enfoque não apenas busca expor a metodologia utilizada na pesquisa, mas também se configura como uma fonte valiosa de reflexão sobre a prática da traduçãoFollowing the 90th anniversary of the first edition of Sorelle Materassi (1934), this work intends to offer a translation of its first chapters, as it is considered the main novel of the mature phase of Florentine writer Aldo Palazzeschi (1885-1974). The interest in Palazzeschi starts from the fact that, given that he is one of the most important names in Italian Futurism and the Novecento, the author\'s literary production is almost unknown in Brazil. Furthermore, due to the possibility to explore the novel through the translation process, we try to further analyze Palazzeschis peculiar writing style and elucidate the problems encountered and the solutions along the translation process, based on principles outlined by Umberto Eco (2007). This work not only exposes the methodology used in the research, but it may also be deemed a valuable source of reflection on the practice of translatio
