New Evidence for Cross Talk between Melatonin and Mitochondria Mediated by a Circadian-Compatible Interaction with Nitric Oxide

    No full text
Extending our previous observations, we have shown on HaCat cells that melatonin, at ~10−9 M concentration, transiently raises not only the expression of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) mRNA, but also the nNOS protein synthesis and the nitric oxide oxidation products, nitrite and nitrate. Interestingly, from the cell bioenergetic point of view, the activated NO-related chemistry induces a mild decrease of the oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) efficiency, paralleled by a depression of the mitochondrial membrane potential. The OXPHOS depression is apparently balanced by glycolysis. The mitochondrial effects described have been detected only at nanomolar concentration of melatonin and within a time window of a few hours’ incubation; both findings compatible with the melatonin circadian cycle

Toward the bi-modal camber morphing of large aircraft wing flaps: the CleanSky experience

    No full text
The Green Regional Aircraft (GRA), one of the six CleanSky platforms, represents the largest European effort toward the greening of next generation air transportation through the implementation of advanced aircraft technologies. In this framework researches were carried out to develop an innovative wing flap enabling airfoil morphing according to two different modes depending on aircraft flight condition and flap setting: • Camber morphing mode. Morphing of the flap camber to enhance high-lift performances during take-off and landing (flap deployed); • Tab-like morphing mode. Upwards and downwards deflection of the flap tip during cruise (flap stowed) for load control at high speed and consequent optimization of aerodynamic efficiency. A true-scale flap segment of a reference aircraft (EASA CS25 category) was selected as investigation domain for the new architecture in order to duly face the challenges posed by real wing installation issues especially with reference to the tapered geometrical layout and 3D aerodynamic loads distributions. The investigation domain covered the flap region spanning 3.6 m from the wing kink and resulted characterized by a taper ratio equal to 0.75 with a root chord of 1.2 m. High TRL solutions for the adaptive structure, actuation and control system were duly analyzed and integrated while assuring overall device compliance with industrial standards and applicable airworthiness requirements

Entanglement generation in (1+1) D QED scattering processes

    No full text
We study real-time meson-meson scattering processes in (1+1)-dimensional QED by means of tensor networks. We prepare initial meson wave packets with given momentum and position introducing an approximation based on the free fermions model. Then, we compute the dynamics of two initially separated colliding mesons, observing a rich phenomenology as the interaction strength and the initial states are varied in the weak and intermediate coupling regimes. Finally, we consider elastic collisions and measure some scattering amplitudes as well as the entanglement generated by the process. Remarkably, we identify two different regimes for the asymptotic entanglement between the outgoing mesons: it is perturbatively small below a threshold coupling, past which its growth as a function of the coupling abruptly accelerates

This catalog accompanied the exhibition "Le tems revient" - “’l tempo si rinuova”. Feste e spettacoli nella Firenze di Lorenzo il Magnifico" organized by Paola Ventrone for the National Celebrations for the V Centenary of the death of Lorenzo de 'Medici. As noted by the numerous reviews, the event was an important and innovative step forward both for studies on Renaissance theater and for the way of conceiving art exhibitions. In fact, for the first time in Italy, it did not limit itself to exhibit paintings or written documents but, in an interdisciplinary manner, it placed side by side objects of different genres (paintings, jewels, manuscripts, prints, theatrical maquettes, banners, weapons and armor, textiles, etc.), to illustrate the material and ideological culture of the theater in all its complexity. The catalog respects the structure of the exhibition in the seven sections containing the illustrative sheets of the exhibits (all introduced by a presentation by the curator), while in the first part presents a series of specialized essays on the various cultural components, and related scientific skills (theatrical, heraldic, chivalrous, literary, architectural), involved in the exhibition itself. A new picture of the history of the theater of the Laurentian age emerged, all based on first hand sources, broadly illustrated in the introductory essay by the editor

Orthodontics and Moebius syndrome. An observational study

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome is a rare condition characterized by bilateral facial and abducens nerve paralysis. The aim of this study is to evaluate the main orthodontic features and the frequency of associated clinical characteristics in patients with Moebius Syndrome (MS). METHODS: According to Terzis classifications, 58 patients with MS aged 8 months to 46 years old underwent orthodontics and clinical examination. RESULTS: Strabismus, upper and lower limb malformations, lip and palatal cleft were frequently associated with MS. Reduced TMJ movements were noted (48%). Cephalometric analysis did not allow identifying a typical facies and a characteristic cephalometric pattern; we have noticed a higher prevalence of Class II (56%) with micrognathia and excessive maxillary development probably due to the lack of lip seal. Early treatment is recommended, with a multidisciplinary approach to reduce the impact of sequelae on the lives of MS patients or their families. CONCLUSIONS: Early treatment is recommended, with a multidisciplinary approach to diminish the impact of sequelae on the lives of MS patients or their families
