Abstract
Luigi M. Lombardi Satriani, an Italian demologist and anthropologist, had a profound interest for the forms of the popular and peasant tradition of Southern Italy, but also for the processes of cultural change due to the economic thrusts of the commodification of culture. The theme of the feast was one of the topics on which the scholar mostly exercised his critical reflections about folk culture. Many of his writings are dedicated to the study and symbolic deciphering of the behaviors of the participants in festive events, in particular Holy Week, Carnival and pilgrimages. Through the reading of Lombardi Satriani’s writings this article proposes a critical path in search of the ethnographic approach and the interpretative model with which the scholar approached the theme of the feast.Luigi M. IEAD : a novel one-line interface to query astronomical science archives
In this article I present IEAD, a new interface for astronomical science databases. It is based on a powerful, yet simple, syntax designed to completely abstract the user from the structure of the underlying database. The programming language chosen for its implementation, JavaScript, makes it possible to interact directly with the user and to provide real-time information on the parsing process, error messages, and name resolution of targets; additionally, the same parsing engine is used for context-sensitive autocompletion. Ultimately, this product should significantly simplify the use of astronomical archives, inspire more advanced uses of them, and allow the user to focus on what scientific research to perform, instead of on how to instruct the computer to do it
Optimal column density measurements from multiband near-infrared observations
We consider from a general point of view the problem of determining the extinction in dense molecular clouds. We use a rigorous statistical approach to characterize the properties of the most widely used optical and infrared techniques, namely the star count and the color excess methods. We propose a new maximum-likelihood method that takes advantage of both star counts and star colors to provide an optimal estimate of the extinction. Detailed numerical simulations show that our method performs optimally under a wide range of conditions and, in particular, is significantly superior to the standard techniques for clouds with high column-densities and affected by contamination by foreground stars
Interpolation and smoothing
Smoothing is omnipresent in astronomy, because almost always measurements performed at discrete positions in the sky need to be interpolated into a smooth map for subsequent analysis. Still, the statistical properties of different interpolation techniques are very poorly known. In this paper, we consider the general problem of interpolating discrete data whose location measurements are distributed on the sky according to a known density distribution (with or without clustering). We derive expressions for the expectation value and for the covariance of the smoothed map for many interpolation techniques, and obtain a general method that can be used to obtain these quantities for any linear smoothing. Moreover, we show that few basic properties of smoothing procedures have important consequences on the statistical properties of the smoothed map. Our analysis allows one to obtain the statistical properties of an arbitrary interpolation procedure, and thus to optimally choose the technique that is most suitable for one's need
Nicest, a near-infrared color excess method tailored to small-scale structures
Observational data and theoretical calculations show that significant small-scale substructures are present in dark molecular clouds. These inhomogeneities can provide useful clues to the physical conditions inside the clouds, but can also severely bias extinction measurements. We present NICEST, a novel method to account and correct for inhomogeneities in molecular cloud extinction studies. The method, tested against numerical simulations, removes almost completely the biases introduced by sub-pixel structures and by the contamination of foreground stars. We applied NICEST to 2MASS data of the Pipe molecular complex. The map thereby obtained shows significantly higher (up to 0.41~\mbox{mag} in AK) extinction peaks than the standard NICER (Lombardi & Schneider 2001, A&A, 373, 359) map. This first application confirms that substructures in nearby molecular clouds, if not accounted for, can significantly bias extinction measurements in regions with A_K > 1~\mbox{mag}; the effect, moreover, is expected to increase in more distant molecular clouds, because of the poorer physical resolution achievable
