On the modelling of spoken word planning: Rejoinder to La Heij, Starreveld and Kuipers

    No full text
Contains fulltext : 56449.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)The author contests several claims of La Heij, Starreveld, and Kuipers (this issue) concerning the modelling of spoken word planning. The claims are about the relevance of error findings, the interaction between semantic and phonological factors, the explanation of word-word findings, the semantic relatedness paradox, and production rules.6 p

Topological edge states in bichromatic photonic crystals

    No full text
Bichromatic photonic crystal structures are based on the coexistence of two different periodicities in the dielectric constant profile. They are realized starting from a photonic crystal waveguide and modifying the lattice constant only in the waveguide region. In this work, we numerically investigate the spectral and topological properties of bichromatic structures. Our calculations demonstrate that they provide a photonic analog of the integer quantum Hall state, a well-known example of a topological insulator. The nontrivial topology of the bandstructure is illustrated by the formation of strongly localized, topologically protected boundary modes when finite-sized bichromatic structures are embedded in a larger photonic crystal.QN/Kuipers LabQN/Quantum Nanoscienc

Plasmon-induced enhancement of nonlinear optical processes in a double-resonant metallic nanostructure grating

    No full text
Nanostructured gratings in a metal surface can highly enhance nonlinear optical processes. The geometrical parameters that characterize a grating can be optimized to achieve intense near-fields, which in turn enhance the nonlinear optical signals. For a nonlinear process that involves multiple frequencies, like four-wave mixing (FWM), the optimization of grating parameters necessary to enhance the radiation in-coupling for both frequencies is not trivial. Here, we propose, compute, and experimentally demonstrate a grating design that is resonant to two excitation frequencies and thus enhances the frequency mixing processes more efficiently. Second- and third-order nonlinear mechanisms are studied using two spatially and temporally overlapped laser pulses with different frequencies. Using our grating design, we achieve an unprecedented nonlinear FWM enhancement factor of 7 × 10 3.Accepted Author ManuscriptQN/Kuipers LabQN/Quantum Nanoscienc

Photonic topological edge states: A nanoscale investigation

    No full text
The aimof this thesis is to investigate the impact of symmetry on light and how it alters its characteristics. Our research centers around the examination of complex photonic crystals rooted in the concept of photonic topological insulators, which are analogs of topological insulators initially introduced in condensed matter physics. Unlike typical insulating materials, these possess a unique ability to conduct along their surface or edges. Leveraging this fundamental property, photonic topological insulators have gained attention for designing transport circuits resistant to back-reflection and scattering mechanisms....QN/Kuipers La

Topological Protection in Radiative Photonic Crystal Cavities

    No full text
We study the signatures of topological light confinement in the leakage radiation of two-dimensional topological photonic crystal cavities that feature the quantum spin Hall effect at telecom wavelengths. The mode profiles in real and momentum space are retrieved using far field imaging and Fourier spectropolarimetry. We examine the scaling behavior of mode spectra, observe band-inversion-induced confinement, and demonstrate hallmarks of topological protection in the loss rates, which are largely unaffected by cavity shape and size. Nanoscale chiral valley-photon interface through optical spin-orbit coupling

    No full text
The emergence of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide materials has sparked intense activity in valleytronics, as their valley information can be encoded and detected with the spin angular momentum of light. We demonstrate the valley-dependent directional coupling of light using a plasmonic nanowire-tungsten disulfide (WS2) layers system. We show that the valley pseudospin in WS2 couples to transverse optical spin of the same handedness with a directional coupling efficiency of 90 ± 1%. Our results provide a platform for controlling, detecting, and processing valley and spin information with precise optical control at the nanoscale.Accepted Author ManuscriptQN/Kuipers LabQN/Quantum Nanoscienc
