The existence of metrics of nonpositive curvature on the Brady-Krammer complexes for finite-type Artin groups
My dissertation focuses on the existence of metrics of non-positive curvature for the simplicial complexes constructed recently by Tom Brady and Daan Krammer for the braid groups and other Artin groups of finite type. In particular, for each Artin group of finite type, there is a recently constructed finite simplicial Eilenberg-Mac Lane space known as its Brady-Krammer complex. The Brady-Krammer complexes are highly symmetric objects. Prior work on the relationship between the Brady-Krammer complexes and the theory of CAT(0)spaces has produced some positive results in low-dimensions. More specifically, the Brady-Krammer complexes of dimension at most 3 have been shown to support piecewise Euclidean metrics of non-positive curvature. Similarly, the 4dimensional Brady-Krammer complexes of type A4 and type B4 also support such metrics. In every instance, the metrics assigned respect all of the symmetries alluded to above. The main results of my dissertation show that this pattern does not extend to the Brady-Krammer complexes of type F4 and D4. These are the first negative results known about the curvature of these Brady-Krammer complexes. The proofs of my main theorems involve a combination of combinatorial results and computer calculations. These negative results are particularly striking since Ruth Charney, John Meier and Kim Whittlesey have shown that a particular complex closely related to each Brady-Krammer complex admits an asymmetric metric satisfying a weak version of non-positive curvature. Thus, one corollary of my results is that the weak asymmetric version of a CAT(0) metric (initially defined by Mladen Bestvina) is strictly weaker than the traditional version

Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representations and dual Garside length of braids
We show that the span of the variable in the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation matrix of a braid is equal to the twice of the dual Garside length of the braid, as was conjectured by Krammer. Our proof is close in spirit to Bigelow's geometric approach. The key observation is that the dual Garside length of a braid can be read off a certain labeling of its curve diagram
The pro-nilpotent Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow representation
International audienceWe construct a 3-variable enrichment of the Lawrence-Krammer-Bigelow (LKB) representation of the braid groups, which is the limit of a pro-nilpotent tower of representations having the original LKB representation as its bottom layer. We also construct analogous pro-nilpotent towers of representations of surface braid groups and loop braid groups
Entrenchment, wealth, power, and the constitution of democratic societies by Paul Starr
Entrenchment, Wealth, Power, and the Constitution of Democratic Societies, by Paul Starr, New Haven, CT: Yale University Press. 2019. 280 pages, hardcover. Why should we, as Management scholars and educators, care about a book on political diagnosis? The answer is twofold. First, the calibre of the author (Paul Starr), an awardee of both Bancroft and Pulitzer Prizes, a former policy advisor to the Clinton administration, and the author of The Transformation of American Medicine (1982), a book with a profound impact on American policy circles. Second, the core concept (entrenchment) of the book, and its potential to advance the process of institutional development, and the ways in which we can reform and change our institutions to better meet the current and pressing needs of the many, rather than preserve the unequal privileges of a few. In light of the geopolitical, social, and environmental pressures we see currently rising across the world (George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi & Tihanyi, 2016; Howard-Grenville, Buckle, Hoskins & George, 2014) there is no better time to examine whether and how we can address some of these grand challenges by reforming and improving our institutions
First record of Pinnularia bullacostae Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1999 in proglacial lakes of the European Alps (Italy)
Pinnularia bullacostae Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1999 is known to colonise soils, lakes and pools mainly in Arctic and Subarctic regions. We describe the first record of Pinnularia bullacostae in the European Alps, including morphological observations and habitat characterisa- tion. The particular environmental conditions induced by the activity of the glacier in proglacial lakes allow for the occurrence of suitable habitats for Pinnularia bullacostae in the Alpine land- scape
