From the history of Goldfaden's Jewish theater in Stanisławow in the interwar period
No full textThe author of the article, who comes from Stanisławów (today IvanoFrankivsk in Ukraine), describes Jewish theatrical life during the interwar period. Goldfaden's Music and Dramatic Society, which was established in 1918, helped it flourish. It organized a theater which staged the plays of Jewish authors with large success. The history of Goldfagen’s Jewish Amateur Music-Dramatic Society in Stanisławów (1918–1932)
No full textThis article presents the activities of Goldfagen’s Jewish Amateur Music-Dramatic Society in Stanisławów. Basing on an analysis of press and archives of the city of Ivano-Frankivsk (formerly Stanisławów), the author describes the circumstances related to the establishment of the Goldfagen’s Society, its programme framework, the repertoire, as well as the difficulties that the Jewish amateur theatre encountered during its activity, related to the difficulties in obtaining permits for the public performance of plays. The article discusses also the influence of prominent members of the Society on the development of the Jewish dramatic theatre in Stanisławów, including Horacy Safrin and the director, Dawid Herman. The amateur theatre, which started by playing revues, one-act plays and farces, moved with time to a serious dramatic repertoire, with which it performed not only in Stanisławów, but throughout the whole eastern part of the interwar Poland.OLGA CIWKACZ, doc. dr, pracownik Katedry Literatury Światowej Uniwersytetu Przykarpackiego im. MID1-COMPLEMENTING ACTIVITY regulates cell proliferation and development via Ca2+ signaling in Marchantia polymorpha
No full textMID1-COMPLEMENTING ACTIVITY (MCA) is a land plant-specific, plasma membrane protein and Ca2+ signaling component that responds to exogenous mechanical stimuli, such as touch, gravity, and hypotonic-osmotic stress, in various plant species. MCA is essential for cell proliferation and differentiation during growth and development in rice (Oryza sativa) and maize (Zea mays). However, the mechanism by which MCA mediates cell proliferation and differentiation via Ca2+ signaling remains unknown. Here, we address this question using the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. We show that the M. polymorpha MCA ortholog, MpMCA, is highly expressed in actively dividing regions, such as apical notches in the thalli and developing gametangiophores, and that MpMCA is a plasma membrane protein. In vivo Ca2+ imaging using a Ca2+ sensor (yellow cameleon) revealed that MpMCA is required for maintaining proper [Ca2+]cyt levels in the apical notch region, egg cells, and antheridium cells. Mpmca mutant plants showed severe cell proliferation and differentiation defects in the thalli, gametangiophores, and gametangia, resulting in abnormal development and unsuccessful fertilization. Furthermore, expression of the Arabidopsis MCA1 gene complemented most of the defects in the growth and development of the Mpmca mutant plants. Our findings indicate that MpMCA is an evolutionarily conserved Ca2+-signaling component that regulates cell proliferation and development across the life cycle of land plants

Synthesis and α-amylase inhibitory activity of glucose–deoxynojirimycin conjugates
No full textInhibitors of α-amylase have attracted attention for their putative effects against diabetes mellitus. Although numerous studies have explored natural small molecule inhibitors, acarbose is currently the only compound with sufficient inhibitory potency and drug-like characteristics to be considered as a potential therapeutic agent. We have synthesized conjugates of the potent glucosidase inhibitor, 1-deoxynojirimycin, and glucose, with the aim of enhancing inhibitory activity against α-amylase. This synthetic conjugate showed increased inhibition of α-amylase compared to 1-deoxynojirimycin alone, suggesting that similar modifications of existing glucosidase inhibitors may yield more potent α-amylase inhibitors
Reflections on kiev almanac "Yehupets"
No full textThe article presents the history of the Kiev artistic-publicist almanac YEHUPETS from the moment of its foundation in 1995 up to present. It provides an explanation for the magazine's title and broadly discusses its contents. The author of the article also attempts to define the target audience of the almanac as well as the rationale behind its foundation, stressing that it is one of very few magazines addressing Jewish culture that managed to survive in the former Soviet Union in the last twenty five years. Lonidamine, a Novel Modulator for the BvgAS System of Bordetella Species
No full textThe Gram-negative bacteria Bordetella pertussis, B. parapertussis, and B. bronchiseptica cause respiratory diseases in various mammals. They share the BvgAS two-component system, which regulates the phenotypic conversion between the virulent Bvg+ and avirulent Bvg– phases. In the BvgAS system, the sensor kinase BvgS senses environmental cues and transduces a phosphorelay signal to the response regulator BvgA, which leads to the expression of Bvg+ phase-specific genes, including virulence factor genes. Bacteria grown at 37°C exhibit the Bvg+ phenotype. In contrast, at lower than 26°C or in the presence of modulators, such as MgSO4 and nicotinic acid, the BvgAS system is inactivated, leading bacteria to the avirulent Bvg– phase. Therefore, effective modulators are expected to provide a therapeutic measure for Bordetella infection; however, no such modulators are currently available, and the mechanism by which modulators inactivate the BvgAS system is poorly understood. In the present study, we identified lonidamine as a novel modulator after screening an FDA-approved drug library using bacterial reporter systems with the Bvg+-specific and Bvg–-specific promoters. Lonidamine directly bound to the VFT2 domain of BvgS and inactivated the BvgAS system at concentrations as low as 50 nM, which was at least 2000- to 20,000-fold lower than the effective concentrations of known modulators. Lonidamine significantly reduced the adherence of B. pertussis to cultured cells but unexpectedly exacerbated bacterial colonization of the mouse nasal septum. These results provide insights into the structural requirements for BvgAS modulators and the role of Bvg phenotypes in the establishment of infection.Citation: Natsuko Ota, Takashi Nishida, Daron M.
