    No full text
This article analyzes the presence of various folktale motifs in one of the lesserknown, but unique novels, of the Valladolid writer Gustavo Martín Garzo, La princesa manca (1995). To do this, this article assesses the weighty impact of traditional folk tales on the formation of the author and his understanding of literature. Garzo Martín himself provides numerous examples of such an influence in a variety of articles published in periodicals, conferences, etc. Given this as its starting point, various aspects of La princesa manca are discussed with reference to recognizable folktale motifs that remain current in a contemporary work that updates them with new formulations and meaning.

This article analyses of one of the few titles by Gustavo Martín Garzo corresponding to the microfiction genre: Todas las madres del mundo (previously published as Pequeño manual de las madres del mundo). Critics have paid little attention to this book, probably because its author is identified with the writing of novels, genre to which its most celebrates titles belong. However, as we try to demonstrate in the following pages, Todas las madres del mundo addresses a recurring theme in all Martín Garzo’s work: motherhood. For doing so, the author uses a brief, nodal writing, in which the concept of ‘book’ does not work as a simple compilation of stories or an editorial convention, but rather constitutes a pattern of relational and topological reading. The result is a thematic cycle of short narrative pieces, similar to a catalog or a bestiary, which is an ideal option to deal with the complexity of motherhood from unusual points of view –sometimes weird or dark, but with a hue of humour.

At the National Museum of the Middle Ages, also called the Cluny Museum, is on display a collection of Flemish tapestries, made of wool and silk, known with the name The Lady and the Unicorn or La dame à la licorne in French. Their origin are at the end of 15th century and it's one of the great art work of European Medieval art. Gustavo Martín Garzo introduces in The door of the birds some essential characteristics of the tapestry, together with a number of features traditionally associated with the unicorn. From there he writes a novel where the historical, artistic and literary reference are combined to bring a narrative wonderful space, and the symbolic meanings of the medieval tapestry is charged with new meaning connected with the lost infancy. This symbolic value reminds the last book of Ana María Matute Uninhabited paradise. Xavier Escudero (éd.).International audienceIn Los viajes de la cigüeña, the specific example of Tierra de Campos region, revisited by the author of this book, enables to discover the two faces that Sergiodel Molino depicts regarding "empty Spain": on the one hand, that of a rural Spain which currently has to face the harsh reality of de population;on the other hand, that of a lost world, which how ever continues to exist in the memory of some. Gustavo Martín Garzo is one of them, who endeavours to make it immort althrough his writing.

Probing behavior of Neophilaenus campestris on various plant species

    No full text
The recent history of Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al. introduction in Europe illustrates how the lack of knowledge about the bacterium-vector-host interactions hinders the application of effective containment strategies, with the bacterial spread that currently appears relentless. Vector behavior is a key component in plant pathogen transmission; therefore, detailed knowledge of vector probing behavior on various host plants would furnish useful data for containing the bacterium. Aiming at this goal, we carried out electrical penetration graph (EPG)-assisted probing behavior observations of the spittlebug, Neophilaenus campestris (Fallen) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae), a candidate vector widespread in all the areas where X. fastidiosa is currently established. Spittlebug probing was first characterized on one of its preferred host plants, Bromus madritensis L. (Poaceae), over short (6 h) and long (16 h) time spans. Thereafter, we performed comparative observations of the spittlebug probing on B. madritensis, olive, and grapevine. Overall, the probing behavior of N. campestris, that is, the main characteristic waveforms, did not differ substantially from that of Philaenus spumarius (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae); however, here we report and describe a new kind of xylem activity interruption, provisionally termed N2, not previously observed in P. spumarius. Considering the time spent in xylem ingestion as a percentage of the total probing time (host-suitability indicator used for spittlebugs), grapevine and B. madritensis are the preferred hosts for N. campestris, with olive as the least suitable among the plants tested. Successful probes, that is, probes during which xylem ingestion occurred, on grapevine were 2.5× greater than olive. Therefore, our data on N. campestris probing behavior suggest that the spittlebug role in X. fastidiosa epidemiology in European vineyards should be given more attention. In the present manuscript, we also discuss the current difficulties in interpreting and analyzing the outcomes of EPG studies on spittlebugs

Motor neuron differentiation of iPSCs obtained from peripheral blood of a mutant TARDBP ALS patient

    No full text
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a severe neurodegenerative disease, mainly affecting the motor neurons (MNs) and without effective therapy. Drug screening is hampered by the lack of satisfactory experimental and pre-clinical models. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) could help to define disease mechanisms and therapeutic strategies as they could be differentiated into MNs, otherwise inaccessible from living humans. In this study, given the seminal role of TDP-43 in ALS pathophysiology, MNs were obtained from peripheral blood mononuclear cells-derived iPSCs of an ALS patient carrying a p.A382T TARDBP mutation and a healthy donor. Venous samples were preferred to fibroblasts for their ease of collection and no requirement for time consuming extended cultures before experimentation. iPSCs were characterized for expression of specific markers, spontaneously differentiated into primary germ layers and, finally, into MNs. No differences were observed between the mutated ALS patient and the control MNs with most of the cells displaying a nuclear localization of the TDP-43 protein. In conclusion, we here demonstrated for the first time that human TARDBP mutated MNs can be successfully obtained exploiting the reprogramming and differentiation ability of peripheral blood cells, an easily accessible source from any patient

This paper asserts the use of child and youth literature in the classroom. Remarking its contribution to the students´competence of literary reading. In order to do so, we select some literary works that share the same conditions that are found in adult literature. We propose two works, Siete historias para la infanta Margarita, by M. A. Fernández-Pacheco and La princesa manca, by G. Martín Garzo. They contain some apparently difficult resources such as metafiction, which belongs to the experimental novel and which may lead the reader towards active reading, challenging him to improve his reading skills. What is more, these types of works are also welcome among adults, showing there is just one literature.

Feeding Behavior and Virus-transmission Ability of Insect Vectors Exposed to Systemic Insecticides

    No full text
The majority of plant viruses depend on Hemipteran vectors for their survival and spread. Effective management of these insect vectors is crucial to minimize the spread of vector-borne diseases, and to reduce crop damage. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of various systemic insecticides on the feeding behavior of Bemisia tabaci and Myzus persicae, as well as their ability to interfere with the transmission of circulative viruses. The obtained results indicated that some systemic insecticides have antifeeding properties that disrupt virus transmission by their insect vectors. We found that some of the tested insecticides significantly reduced phloem contact and sap ingestion by aphids and whiteflies, activities that are closely linked to the transmission of phloem-limited viruses. These systemic insecticides may play an important role in reducing the primary and secondary spread of tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) and turnip yellows virus (TuYV), transmitted by B. tabaci and M. persicae, respectively
