    No full text
Lo que nos jugamos en este debate es si la lectura en sentido amplio, es decir, la fruición del arte tal como la conocieron las tradiciones culturales predigitales tiene algún sentido, alguna proyec- ción sobre la esfera de la existencia, también en sentido amplio: entre la dimensión salvífica para el sujeto y la transformación radical del medio social justo allí donde la racionalidad comunicativa da consigo y con su límite, en la esfera de la libertadThe purpose of this communication is to put interpretation back into its fundamental place in the transmission of culture and life in a moment when we are lacking the cohesive reference of an authority because, as pointed out by Landow, the crises of the concept of work and author that the theory of the text had been proclaiming has embodied itself in our culture by means of the digital technologies. What we defend here in this debate is whether reading in the broad sense of the word, that is to say, the enjoyment of art as it was known by the predigital cultural traditions, makes any sense or projects itself in any way upon the sphere of existence, also in the broadest sense of the term: between the salvational dimension for the subject and the radical transformation of the social medium there where the communicative rationality meets itself and its limit, in the sphere of freedom

In this interview, José Antonio Palao Errando, author of La interfaz del sentido. La pantalla fílmica entre las demás pantallas (The Interface of Meaning: The Film Screen Among Other Screens), explores the continuity between his previous theses (subjectivity in digital environments, image rhetoric) and his new book. The author uses the term “interface of meaning” as a paradox or oxymoron, since the film screen is defined as being resistant to interactivity, but promises to offer meaning or an “epistemic solution to an enigma”. Among other issues, Professor Palao addresses film realism as the “zero degree of narrative writing,” a place where “truth” and ‘lies’ can be present. He introduces the concept of “making-of poetics” (which originated in the 1990s) as a genre that reformulates the ontological contract, leading to a revival of the documentary and the rise of “based on real events” in fiction. In addition, he expounds on his concept of the “Informative Paradigm” and argues for the relevance of using the terms ‘hyperframing’ and “hypernarrative” to analyze post-classical film. His central thesis is that the film screen halts digital interactivity and offers itself as a host that gives meaning to other screens by representing them in the diegesis.

Nanophotonics with Diamond Color Centers: Quantum Optics and Entanglement Protocols

    No full text
A large-scale quantum network, where many nodes are connected via entanglement and can share and process quantum information, will allow applications that are now unattainable. While some are known, ranging from distributed quantum computing to enhanced quantum sensing and quantum communication, the full potential of such a fundamentally new technology is yet to be discovered. Color centers in diamond, with their excellent optical properties, long spin coherence times, and versatile control over local nuclear spins, are a leading platform for building quantum network nodes and recently allowed crucial proof-of-principle experiments. Going beyond experiments and towards a large and functional network requires faster entanglement generation and a scalable architecture. Integration of color centers in nanophotonic structures paves the way to solving these challenges, enhancing the interface between the spins and photons that carry quantum information across the network. Furthermore, combining diamond nanophotonic devices with integrated photonic and electronic circuits is a promising way to realize a large-scale quantum system. This thesis is about integrated spin-photon interfaces in diamonds and how to generate entanglement between them and includes experimental and theoretical results toward this goal.First, we introduce the Group-IV color centers in diamond, which thanks to their symmetry properties are robust against electric field noise and compatible with integration in nano-scale structures. Focusing on the tin-vacancy (SnV) center, we discuss the main features and effects that play a role in its use as a spin-photon interface. We then present experimental results going from the fabrication and characterization of bulk diamond samples with SnV centers to the integration in nanophotonic waveguides, where we show stable and coherent optical lines and measure the extinction of the transmission signal caused by a single SnV center with contrast up to 35%. Then, we investigate the interaction between a single SnV center and a weak coherent light field in a single-mode waveguide. We perform spectroscopy of the transmitted and reflected signals, and demonstrate the single-photon nature of the interaction by measuring the effect on the photon statistics in both fields. Finally, we introduce a theoretical framework for photon-mediated entanglement generation protocols between spin-based quantum systems. This allows us to understand, categorize, and construct entanglement protocols in terms of abstract building blocks, that can be combined with hardware modeling for a more detailed description of the protocols. To showcase the framework, we analyze three different entanglement protocols, considering silicon-vacancy (SiV) centers coupled to photonic crystal cavities as the hardware, and we quantitatively compare them using a software package built to match the structure of the framework.QID/Hanson La

Observations of low and intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs above 100 GeV with VERITAS

    No full text
Most of the ~ 50 blazars detected to date at TeV energies (E > 0.1 TeV) are high-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs). Only a handful episodic detections of low- and intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (LBL/IBLs, with synchrotron peak frequencies in the infrared and optical regime) have been reported by ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, typically during high-flux states. The VERITAS array located in southern Arizona has observed five known TeV LBL/IBLs since 2009: 3C 66A, WComae, PKS 1424+240, S5 0716+714 and BL Lacertae, with exposures of 5-10 hours/year, which so far resulted in the detection of a bright, sub-hour timescale gamma-ray flare of BL Lacertae in June 2011. We also report the detection and characterization of two new IBLs: VER J0521+211 and B2 1215+30

Implications for the structure of the relativistic jet from multiwavelength observations of NGC 6251

    No full text
NGC 6251 is a luminous radio galaxy ~104 Mpc away that was detected significantly with the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and before that with EGRET (onboard the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory). Different observational constraints favor a nuclear origin for the gamma-ray emission. Here we present a study of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the core of NGC 6251, and give results of modeling in the one-zone synchrotron/SSC framework. The SSC model provides a good description of the radio to gamma-ray emission but, as for other misaligned sources, predicts a lower Lorentz factor (\Gamma~2.4) than typically found when modeling blazars. If the blazar unification scenario is correct, this seems to point to the presence of at least two emitting regions in these objects, one with a higher and one with a lower Lorentz factor. The solution of a structured jet, with a fast moving spine surrounded by a slow layer, is explored and the consequences of the two models for the jet energetics and evolution are discussed

BL LAC CANDIDATES FOR TEV OBSERVATIONS

    No full text
BL Lac objects are the most numerous class of extragalactic TeV-detected sources. One of the biggest difficulties in investigating their TeV emission resides in their limited number, since only 47 BL Lacs are known as TeV emitters. In this paper, we propose new criteria to select TeV BL Lac candidates based on the infrared (IR) and X-ray observations. We apply our selection criteria to the BL Lac objects listed in the ROMA-BZCAT catalog so identifying 41 potential TeV emitters. We then consider a search over a more extended sample combining the ROSAT bright source catalog and the WISE all-sky survey revealing 54 additional candidates for TeV observations. Our investigation also led to a tentative classification of 16 unidentified X-ray sources as BL Lac candidates. This analysis provides new interesting BL Lac targets for future observationswith ground based Cherenkov telescopes

    No full text
