Poesie 1968-2018
Keeping It Sustainable. The Energy Efficiency of Twentieth-Century Architecture
Before being accused of poor energy efficiency, modern architecture was often considered unable to guarantee a minimum of well-being to users, without the help of heating and air conditioning systems. This thesis has been widely used by critics of the Modern Movement (Banham 1969), especially in comparison with nineteenth-century architecture (Collins 1975). The pan de verre of the Cité de Réfuge is a striking example: the large façade without openings was the subject of self-criticism by Le Corbusier himself, which stigmatized the undeniable waste of energy necessary to obtain a minimum climatic comfort inside. In 2014, the restoration of the building addressed this problem, attempting to balance conservation of architecture, energy demand, users' well-being (Gallo & Fernandez 2014). However, this judgment of "constitutive" energy inefficiency of modern architecture has been rarely supported by a quantitative analysis of the thermal inertia of the building envelope (Lucchi 2017) and the indoor climatic well-being of users. Energy retrofit interventions often rely on parameters defined for newly designed buildings, which already proved to be unable to describe the specificity of each building (Ryhl-Svendsen et al. 2020), especially when it is the result of an experimental architectural project with high social content, as the University dormitories "Collegi" of Urbino are. However, some experiences, even on large complexes (Graf 2012), have recently demonstrated a growing interest in research for this issue. Energy efficiency has thus gained a place alongside other collateral issues to the conservation of the modern such as safety, accessibility for disabled, the need for a specific regulatory framework (Mazzarella 2015) for this recent and vast heritage. Research carried out under the Keeping it Modern grant since 2015 also confirms this trend as demonstrated, for example, by the Conservation management plans drawn up for Sydney Opera House (Crocker 2017), FAUUSP in São Paulo (Pinheiro et al. 2017), Het Schip in Amsterdam (Van Diemen et al. 2018), Nakashima Arts Building in Pennsylvania (Bargues-Ballester et al. 2017), Eames House in Los Angeles (Matarese et al. 2019)
The realizability problem as a special case of the infinite-dimensional truncated moment problem
The realizability problem is a well-known problem in the analysis of complex systems, which can be modeled as an infinite-dimensional moment problem. More precisely, as a truncated K-moment problem where K is the space of all possible configurations of the components of the considered system. The power of this reformulation has been already exploited by Kuna, Lebowitz, and Speer [Ann. Appl. Probab. 21 (2011), pp. 1253-1281], where necessary and sufficient conditions of Haviland type have been obtained for several instances of the realizability problem. In this article we exploit this same reformulation to apply to the realizability problem the recent advances obtained by Curto, Ghasemi, Infusino, and Kuhlmann [J. Operator Theory 90 (2023), pp. 223-261] for the truncated moment problem for linear functionals on general unital commutative algebras. This provides alternative proofs and sometimes extensions of several results of Kuna, Lebowitz, and Speer [Ann. Appl. Probab. 21 (2011), pp. 1253-1281], allowing to finally embed them in the above-mentioned unified framework for the infinite-dimensional truncated moment problem
Enlarging the Boundaries of a UNESCO WHS Towards the Recent Past. The Work by Giancarlo De Carlo in Urbino
This chapter discusses the possibility of enlarging the boundaries of a UNESCO World Heritage Site to include the architectural heritage of the twentieth century. The reason for such process is that recent heritage proves enriching the set of values where the statement of Outstanding Universal Value of that site rests on. The works by Giancarlo De Carlo in Urbino is a perfect case study
Abstract : This work has as main goal to see how is short-term capital management in technology companies of Florianopolis. In the theoretical framework, several concepts were presented to the term "working capital" which, generally, consists in manage the resources themselves or others needed to sustain operating the business routine activities. Over the years, Florianópolis has become an internationally recognized technological center by the existence of significant technology companies (EBTs), incubators and institutes in the region. The EBTs differentiate themselves from others by the existence of a significant technological effort, in which innovation is the key for their competitive strategies and investments are concentrated in research and development. From the application of a structured online questionnaire (survey) in 79 companies of 281 companies part of the population associated to ACATE - a very importante organization that represent the technology companies - and located in Florianópolis, there was a representation of engineers managing the companies. With respect to financial planning 58.2% of managers reported that they are engaged in the planning of short-term funds and only 13.9% with the financing of the company in the long term. Over 45% responded that inventory management is not applicable to the company's activity. Approximately 95% of the sample uses cash flow and have knowledge about their need for working capital. Still, 53% said they use operational sources to remedy its need for working capital and other 48.1% financial loans held for such purpose. The results showed a gap between theories statements in corporate finance and the management routines in EBTs. And, therefore, some changes need to happen in working capital theories in order to simplify and democratize the knowledge of financial management techniques

Textures design for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for people with deaf-blindness and multi-sensory impairment
This paper introduces designed maps (Del Curto et al., 2010) for innovative
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) applications tailored
for children and adolescents with deaf-blindness and multiple sensory
impairments. Deaf-blindness, a complex disability with varying hearing and
visual impairments, requires diverse communication modalities to facilitate
interpersonal connections and environmental navigation. Multiple Sensory
Impairment involves Visual Impairment coexisting with other disabilities,
global developmental disorders, or communication impediments (Maia
et al., 2013). Within this context, design is crucial in understanding and
leveraging material attributes to create innovative user products. Specifically,
the texture involves sensitising surfaces through graphic signs, incisions,
reliefs, and more (Del Curto et al., 2010). Focusing on AAC in educational
and rehabilitation settings, this research lays the foundation for developing
an in-depth study to investigate new possibilities in texture design. This
research contributes to advancing assistive technology and inclusive design,
offering valuable insights for educators, designers, and practitioners
