Sanz Desco, R. (2015). Massively parallelizable list-mode reconstruction using a Monte Carlo-based elliptical Gaussian model

    No full text
Purpose: A fully three-dimensional (3D) massively parallelizable list-mode ordered-subsets expectation-maximization (LM-OSEM) reconstruction algorithm has been developed for high-resolution PET cameras. System response probabilities are calculated online from a set of parameters derived from Monte Carlo simulations. The shape of a system response for a given line of response (LOR) has been shown to be asymmetrical around the LOR. This work has been focused on the development of efficient region-search techniques to sample the system response probabilities, which are suitable for asymmetric kernel models, including elliptical Gaussian models that allow for high accuracy and high parallelization efficiency. The novel region-search scheme using variable kernel models is applied in the proposed PET reconstruction algorithm...This work was partially supported by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation through CDTI’s CENIT program (AMIT project) and INNPACTO (PRECISION project), Instituto de Salud Carlos III (PI09/91058 and PI09/91065), and Project Nos. PETonCHIP: architecture of a high-resolution, fully digital positron emission tomography scanner for small animal imaging

Proceeding of: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (NSS'07), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, Oct. 27 - Nov. 3, 2007Small animal PET systems based on a reduced number of rotating planar detectors have advantages in terms of cost/performance for high resolution imaging. The huge integration capability of current semiconductor technologies has favoured miniaturization and popularised the concept of system on a chip. Following this trend, this work attempts to integrate in a single chip the acquisition electronics and coincidence unit of a fully digital four-head PET scanner. The proof of concept is based on commercially available industrial modules, including a FPGAbased high speed acquisition board combined with a rackable computer, both in 6U cPCI form. The four acquisition digital blocks, coincidence logic and communication interface take up close to 30% of the available resources of the FPGA, providing margin for improvement in the system under development. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science through the FPU grant program as well as by the CDTEAM consortium as part of the CENIT Spanish research plan

The Effect of Dietary Supplementation with Plant Sterols on Total and LDL-Cholesterol in Plasma Is Affected by Adherence to Mediterranean Diet: Insights from the DESCO Randomized Clinical Study

    No full text
Plant sterols are well-known natural lipid-lowering agents. The DESCO (Diet and plant sterols in the control of cholesterolemia) study was a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-way crossover clinical trial designed to investigate the effect of a once-a-day ready-to-drink dietary supplement containing 2.5 g of phytosterols on the lipid profile, also in relation to the quality of the diet, in a cohort of 50 Italian individuals with polygenic hypercholesterolemia and low global cardiovascular risk. Eligible individuals were enrolled in a run-in period of 2 weeks. Then, participants who qualified for continuation in the study were randomly allocated (1:1) to a 3-week treatment with either phytosterols or placebo. After a 2-week washout period, enrolled individuals were crossed over to receive the alternative treatment. Dietary supplementation with phytosterols was associated with significant improvement in plasma levels of total cholesterol (TC; -11.8 ± 4.0 mg/dL, p = 0.016), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C; -7.8 ± 7.7 mg/dL, p = 0.021), and apolipoprotein B-100 (Apo B-100, -3.7 ± 4.1 mg/dL, p = 0.048) compared to baseline. The changes in TC and LDL-C were also significant compared to placebo, and greater adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with greater reductions in LDL-C. Dietary supplementation with phytosterols was well tolerated and adherence to treatment was high. According to the findings of DESCO, the once-a-day ready-to-drink dietary supplement we tested is able to quickly and significantly decrease plasma levels of TC, LDL-C, and Apo B-100, with a greater effect in individuals more adhering to the Mediterranean dietary pattern
