Typology in pollination biology: lessons from an historical critique

Typological schemes that describe putative floral adaptations for pollinators have played a central role in pollination biology. In 1882 the prominent German botanist and Darwinist Hermann Müller commented critically on a precursor of modern versions of such “pollination syndromes” that had been developed by his Italian colleague Federico Delpino. Delpino also was a self-proclaimed Darwinist, but in fact adhered to teleology— explanation beyond nature. As a consequence he viewed his typology as reflecting a deeper ideal and thus as rigidly true, and rejected as unimportant any visitors to flowers that it did not predict. Although Müller also classified flowers as to pollinators, he considered such schemes to be fallible, and pondered what diversity and variation in floral visitors might mean. Müller’s comments, which we translate here, are of interest given that appeals to teleology have resurfaced from time to time in discussions of pollination syndromes, and more importantly because his warning against taking typological schemes too literally remains valid. Typology is a useful tool in biology, including pollination biology, but care must be taken that it does not replace nature as perceived realit

    Eigil Greve Knuth, 1903-1996

... Count Eigil Knuth was born on 8 August 1903 at Klampenborg, an affluent community 10 km north of Copenhagen, the son of captain Eigil Greve Knuth and Djimphna, nee Gamel. ... Knuth was always of an uneasy mind, which was especially visible when he was younger. He graduated from one of Copenhagen\u27s oldest, best, and most distinguished high schools (gymnasium), but instead of attending the university, he continued at a technical school for apprentices to gain admission to the building technique school of the Academy of Fine Arts, where he spent the years from 1922 to 1924. He then moved to Italy for three years to study sculpture. Back in Denmark, he spent a year at Niels Buck\u27s Gymnastic Folk High School and graduated as a gymnastics teacher in the spring of 1932. That same summer, he participated for the first time in the excavating of old Norse ruins in West Greenland, assisting Dr. Aage Roussel from the National Museum. ... During the summer of 1934, he was excavating old Norse ruins, this time at Igaliko, again assisting Dr. Roussel and also Dr. Poul Norlund. In 1935 he was archaeologist on the Courtauld Expedition to East Greenland, during which Gunbjorns Fjeld, Greenland\u27s highest mountain, was climbed. There Knuth was assisting Dr. Helge Larsen from the National Museum, and without doubt their discussions had an important impact on Knuth the future archaeologist. ... During the Courtauld expedition, Knuth had many talks with Ebbe Munck, in which they agreed that their generation owed the nation a Danish expedition comparable to the Danmark Ekspedition 1906-08. ... As soon as the war was over, Knuth and Munck began to organize the contemplated expedition to Peary Land. Paid for by the newly established Danish Expedition Foundation, it would be the first in a long row of Peary Land Expeditions headed by Knuth. ... [The expedition house "Bronlund Hus" was built at Bronlund Fjord and from it many sledge and hiking trips were carried out which resulted in many archaeology discoveries.] However, Knuth deserves most credit for the demonstration of his, as he called them, Independence I and Independence II cultures, two immigration waves, almost 3000 years apart, of Palaeoeskimos, who migrated from Canada over northern Greenland and down the northern part of East Greenland. Independence I is most likely a branch of the oldest Saqqaq culture, whereas Independence II may be an early phase of the Dorset culture. ... Eigil Knuth was a very complex character. He was the artist par excellence; he was the author of several books, many papers, and numerous articles. ... His descriptions of Greenland landscapes, for instance, are masterpieces in beauty of sterling value. He was a sculptor with his own characteristic style and also a draftsman and a painter. He was a philosopher but also an exact scientist. ... Knuth\u27s Peary Land Expeditions ended in 1995, when he visited his beloved Bronlund Hus, his headquarters for so many years, for the last time. ..

Computer-aided prediction models, such as CERCBET, are seen as important plant protection tools. CERCBET allows advisers and growers to effectively and economically control Cercospora beticola, an important fungal disease in sugar beets. This reduces costs for the growers and protects the environment through minimised pesticide usage. Currently, there is no chemical control for the highly damaging nematode pest Heterodera schachtii in German sugar beet production. Changes in cultivation practices, e.g. growing of resistant green manure crops or resistant sugar beet varieties, or longer crop rotations, are commonly associated with higher costs or reduced revenue. In order to allow growers to effectively and sustainably use resistant varieties, detailed information on nematode population densities, distribution and composition of the nematode population are required. In contrast to potato cyst nematodes, that can complete only one generation per year, the development of prediction models for H. schachtii is much more complex. This is largely due to the fact that up to three generations per year may be completed. Current approaches cannot predict population fluctuations adequately. Modification of the prediction model NEMAPLOT, in conjunction with a country-wide monitoring for sugar beet cyst nematodes, could result in a successful introduction to practical agriculture

    S. jacobaea L. var. nudus Weston sensu Van der Meijden is not recorded from Sylt and the Danish Wadden islands, as GREMMEN & KREMERS (1971) and VAN DER MEIJDEN (1976) mentioned. They confused records of Senecio dunensis (without author), being formerly S. vulgaris L.f. dunensis Knuth (S. vulgaris subsp. denticulatus (O. F. Müller) Sell) with those of S. dunensis Dum. (S. jacobaea L. var. nudus Weston)

AbstractWe compute the generating function of column-strict plane partitions with parts in {1,2,…,n}, at most c columns, p rows of odd length and k parts equal to n. This refines both Krattenthaler’s [C. Krattenthaler, The major counting of nonintersecting lattice paths and generating functions for tableaux, Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 115 (552) (1995) vi+109] and the author’s [I. Fischer, A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A (in press). Preprint, math.CO/0301103] refinement of the Bender–Knuth (ex-)conjecture. The result is proved by an extension of the method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas which was introduced by the author in I. Fischer [A method for proving polynomial enumeration formulas, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A (in press). Preprint, math.CO/0301103] to q-quasi-polynomials

Technological developments have enabled people to easily obtain numerous types of information within a rapidly and affordable way. In the past whereas the internet was not as crowded as it is nowadays, people have to browse through piles of books, or other printed media to look for the information they required. For most commonly used search engines, the keywords inputted by users are sometimes found to be discrepant with found/intended results, in addition to sometimes redirecting users toward another page that further causes delays due to the time-consuming process of loading. Based on that particular need and analysis, the author is intending to design a search engine that applies only for the search of songs, and hereby giving the following title to this project: “Engineering Design of Search Engine for Songs by Utilizing Knuth-Morris-Pratt (KMP) Algorithm”. To adjustably fulfill the requirements in the designing of the above-mentioned search engine, the author utilizes PHP programming language to serve as a basis for the system’s coding. Whilst for testing, the author uses black box as the method for testing

An alternate form of Merino-Mička-Mütze\u27s approach to a combinatorial generation problem of Knuth

    No full text
A modification of Merino-Mička-Mütze\u27s solution to a combinatorial generation problem of Knuth is proposed in this survey. The resulting alternate form to such solution is compatible with a reinterpretation by the author of a proof of existence of Hamilton cycles in the middle-levels graphs. Such reinterpretation is given in terms of a dihedral quotient graph associated to each middle-levels graph. The vertices of such quotient graph represent Dyck words and their associated ordered trees. Those Dyck words are linearly ordered via a rooted tree that covers all their tight, or irreducible, forms, offering an universal reference point of view to express and integrate the periodic paths, or blocks, whose concatenation leads to Hamilton cycles resulting from the said solution.23 pages, 8 figure
