Tenchini’s legacy as a starting point for the reconstruction of the history of a criminal in the 19th century|L’eredità del Tenchini come punto di partenza per la ricostruzione della storia di un criminale del XIX secolo
Late in the 19th century, physician Lorenzo Tenchini undertook a study of criminal subjects and psychiatric patients. One of these was B.A., a 22-year-old soldier who committed suicide after attempting
to kill his lover, a prostitute named G.I. The starting points of this study were the analysis of the subject's
biography – data which resulted from the autopsy – and several observations on his brain and skull in
accordance with the phrenological doctrine of that time. The goal of this work was to shed new light
on an Italian criminal of the late 19th century and on Tenchini's work, combining the material collected
by the doctor himself with sources of the period and modern medical knowledge
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Archaeometrical analyses of early egyptian glass from Thebe area.
In this work a series of fragments of Egyptian unguentaria are characterized from the chemical and physical point of view. The analysed samples were produced in the first step of the Egyptian glass production, during the new Kingdom of Egypt. The glass production in Egypt started under Thumosis III kingdom and developed until it reached its maximum during the kingdom of Amenhotep III (XVIII dinasty, 1390-1352 BC.) e Amenhotep IV/Akhenaton (XVIII dinasty, 1352-1338 BC). In this period, different glass shapes and typologies appears, and also the variety of decorations and colours increased.
The analysed samples pertain to six vessels (amphoriskoi and krateriskoi) coming from Thebes area and now stored at the Egyptian Museum of Turin (Italy) after the excavation carried out at the Valley of the Queens. All these vessels, are blue with yellow, white and turquoise decorations and were produced with the core forming technique.
The chemical analyses of major and minor elements were performed by Electron Microprobe (EMPA). The nature of the opacifying and colouring agents was determined by X-ray powder diffraction. Since only micro volumes were sampled from the artefacts (less than 1 mm3), the diffraction experiments were successfully carried out using a single crystal diffractometer equipped with a CCD camera.
The chemical data obtained show that all the samples contain high levels of Na2O. However, along with a number of glass containing rather high level of both MgO and K2O - thus classified as plant ash based glass - some of them show rather low levels of K2O along with high MgO percentages. Most of these low-potassium high-magnesium samples are Al- rich Co-bearing blue glass: this seems to indicate they were probably coloured with the addition of Co-bearing alum. This is also consistent with the high level of MnO present in these samples.
This situation suggests the use of two different kinds of flux for the production of these glass: an organic source (for the production of most of yellow, white and turquoise glass) and an inorganic one (leading to lower levels of K and Mg) used for the production of the Co-bearing samples.
Yellow opaque decorations are rich in Pb and Sb, while only Sb is present in the white and light blue ones. This is consistent with the results of the X-ray powder diffraction analyses, that confirmed the presence of lead antimonates in the yellow decorations and of calcium antimonates in white and light blue ones. No crystalline phases were detected in dark blue, black and violet bulk glass
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Diatom extraction: A new technique with heated H2O2. A technical note
The best method of diatom identification in animal and human tissues is still an important discussion topic, in terms of effectiveness and reliability. In this technical note, authors propose a new method of extraction of diatoms using heated hydrogen peroxide from animal and human tissue samples. This method has been compared with the traditional method of digestion with acids. The results of the comparison show that heated hydrogen peroxide extraction is more efficient in terms of reduction of sediment, extraction of the material and preservation of diatoms proving to be a viable alternative to conventional approaches with acids in terms of costs and operator safety
Over 30-year retrospective analyses of moped-motorcycle fatal road accidents in the northern area of the Italian region of Emilia Romagna and review of the literature: Aiming for further preventive measures in the future
Road traffic injuries are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with pedestrians and riders of two-wheeled motor vehicles being the most vulnerable. The present study aims to determine the epidemiological characteristics of fatal motorcycle crashes in a portion of the Italian region of Emilia Romagna, and to compare them with the data available in literature. Data were retrieved from autopsy reports on 350 subjects who died following road accidents involving moped or motorcycle in the cities of Parma, Piacenza, and Reggio Emilia. Two types of data were extrapolated: circumstantial and traumatological. The population was divided into subgroups according to gender, crash time, alcohol positivity, presence or absence of the helmet, and the period elapsed between the accident and death. Most of the considered road accidents occurred during the day and on weekends. 25.5 % of the victims tested positive for alcohol. As far as traumas are concerned, the limbs resulted to be the most affected body segment, followed by the head (87.4 %), the thorax (85.7 %), the abdomen (65.7 %), and lastly the neck (50.3 %). According to similar studies, the sample victim of a moped/ motorcycle accident is a young male subject. The results obtained allow us to demonstrate that the mandatory use of the helmet has reduced skull and brain injury over the years. At present, no law regulates the use of protections for other body parts. Regulatory interventions in this sense would be desirable given the ever more rapid technical evolutions in the field of motorcycles
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
