Genome-wide landscape of alternative splicing events in brachypodium distachyon
Recently, Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as a model plant for studying monocot grasses and cereal crops. Using assembled expressed transcript sequences and subsequent mapping to the corresponding genome, we identified 1219 alternative splicing (AS) events spanning across 2021 putatively assembled transcripts generated from 941 genes. Approximately, 6.3% of expressed genes are alternatively spliced in B. distachyon. We observed that a majority of the identified AS events were related to retained introns (55.5%), followed by alternative acceptor sites (16.7%).We also observed a low percentage of exon skipping (5.0%) and alternative donor site events (8.8%). The 'complex event' that consists of a combination of two or more basic splicing events accounted for ~14.0%. Comparative AS transcript analysis revealed 163 and 39 homologous pairs between B. distachyon and Oryza sativa and between B. distachyon and Arabidopsis thaliana, respectively. In all, we found 16 AS transcripts to be conserved in all 3 species. AS events and related putative assembled transcripts annotation can be systematically browsed at Plant Alternative Splicing Database (http://proteomics.ysu.edu/altsplice/plant/). © The Author 2012
LUM Filters: A Class of Rank-order-based Filters for Smoothing and Sharpening
A new class of rank-order-based filters, called lower-upper-middle (LUM) filters, is introduced. The output of these filters is determined by comparing a lower- and an upper-order statistic to the middle sample in the filter window. These filters can be designed for smoothing and sharpening, or outlier rejection. The level of smoothing done by the filter can range from no smoothing to that of the medianfilter. This flexibility allows the LUM filter to be designed to best balance the tradeoffs between noisesmoothing and signal detail preservation. LUM filters for enhancing edge gradients can be designed to be insensitive to low levels of additive noise and to remove impulsive noise. Furthermore, LUM filters do not cause overshoot or undershoot. Some statistical and deterministic properties of the LUM filters are developed, and a number of experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance. These experiments include applications to 1D signals and to images
PELANGGARAN PRINSIP KERJA SAMA DAN PRINSIP KESOPANAN DALAM PERCAKAPAN LUM KELAR DI RADIO SAS FM
Waluyo. C0202060. 2009. Pelanggaran Prinsip Kerja Sama dan Prinsip
Kesopanan dalam Percakapan Lum Kelar di Radio SAS FM. Skripsi: Jurusan
Sastra Indonesia Fakultas Sastra dan Seni Rupa Universitas Sebelas Maret
Surakarta.
Pelanggaran
prinsip kerja sama terjadi terhadap empat maksim, yaitu (a) pelanggaran maksim
kuantitas, (b) pelanggaran maksim kualitas, (c) pelanggaran maksim relevansi,
dan (d) pelanggaran maksim pelaksanaan. Pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama paling
banyak terjadi terhadap maksim kualitas. Kedua, ditemukan adanya pelanggaran
terhadap prinsip kesopanan dalam percakapan Lum Kelar. Pelanggaran hanya
terjadi terhadap lima maksim dari enam maksim yang tercakup dalam prinsip ini.
Pelanggaran-pelanggaran yang dimaksud adalah (a) pelanggaran maksim
kebijaksanaan, (b) pelanggaran maksim penerimaan, (c) pelanggaran maksim
kemurahan, (d) pelanggaran maksim kerendahan hati, dan (e) pelanggaran
maksim kecocokan. Pelanggaran terhadap maksim kesimpatian tidak ditemukan
dalam penelitian ini. Ketiga, tuturan dalam Lum Kelar mengandung beberapa
macam implikatur percakapan. Implikatur-implikatur tersebut digunakan antara
lain untuk (a) menegaskan, (b) mengeluh, (c), menciptakan humor, (d) menyindir,
(e) memastikan, (f) menolak, (g) menyombongkan diri, (h) mengejek, dan (i)
menyatakan rasa kesal. Dalam percakapan Lum Kelar, implikatur percakapan
terbanyak digunakan untuk humor. Hal ini merupakan salah satu strategi untuk
menarik minat pendengar, agar mau mendengarkan Lum Kelar dari awal hingga
akhir

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
