Disrupted posttranscriptional regulation of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) by a 5′UTR mutation is associated with a cftr-related disease
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterised as a single-gene disorder with a simple, autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. However, translation of CFTR genotype into CF phenotype is influenced by nucleotide sequence variations at multiple genetic loci, and individuals heterozygous for CFTR mutations are predisposed to a range of CFTR-related conditions, such as Disseminated Bronchiectasis. CF disease severity and CFTR-related conditions are more akin to complex, multifactorial traits, which are increasingly being associated with mutations that perturb gene expression. We have identified a patient with Disseminated Bronchiectasis, who is heterozygous for a single nucleotide substitution in the CFTR 5'UTR (c.-34C>T). The c.-34C>T mutation creates an upstream AUG codon and upstream open reading frame that overlaps, and is out of frame with, the CFTR protein coding sequence. Using luciferase reporter constructs, we have shown that the c.-34C>T mutation decreases gene expression by 85%-99%, by reducing translation efficiency and mRNA stability. This is the first CFTR regulatory mutation shown to act at a post-transcriptional level that reduces the synthesis of normal CFTR (Class V), and reaffirms the importance of regulatory mutations as a genetic basis of multifactorial phenotypes. #THISMAMA: SERENA WILLIAMS AMPLIFYING THE PERILS OF BLACK MOTHERHOOD
#THISMAMA: Serena Williams Amplifying the Perils of Black Motherhood. In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) found that Black women are over 200 percent more likely to die from childbirth-related causes than white women (Hoyert 2020). Routinely, Black women describe attending obstetricians and delivery room staff who ignore the mother’s knowledge about her own body. In 2017, tennis champion Serena Williams experienced similar discriminatory practices when she nearly perished giving birth to her daughter, Olympia. Motivated to end racial prejudice in the medical treatment of pregnancy, Williams publicized her delivery-story and used Twitter to share her struggle as a new mother. This article examines how Williams uses maternal rhetoric on Twitter to build a community of women who resist dominant discourses about medicine and motherhood. Centered on Williams\u27s tweologism (new hashtag) #ThisMama, Alison Lukowski builds on research on digital maternal rhetoric scholarship (Joutseno 2018; Lukowski & Sparby 2016; Owens 2015, 2010; Friedman 2013; Harp & Tremayne 2006). While Williams’s advocacy for Black mothers is a form of feminist mothering, her application of #ThisMama on Twitter demonstrates the tensions between authority, advertising, and advocacy.

Lukowski, The European Nobility In The Eighteenth Century
As the title suggests, this book offers readers an exhaustive history of the customs, beliefs, rituals, and mores of the European nobility in the eighteenth century. The book has much to recommend it. For one, it is organized thematically, with each chapter addressing a particular aspect of noble life, from marriage, to economics, to education, to inheritance. By eschewing a chronological format, Professor Lukowski is able to present the history of the European nobility in a much more comprehensive and diverse fashion, giving the reader a fascinating glimpse into the everyday life of Europe. For another, the author considers nobility as a European wide phenomenon and in doing so he is able to demonstrate the notion that the institution of "nobility" was not a static one and varied greatly across the European continent, particularly between East and West
Spectral parameters for scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory
Planar N= 4 Super Yang-Mills theory appears to be a quantum integrable four-dimensional conformal theory. This has been used to find equations believed to describe its exact spectrum of anomalous dimensions. Integrability seemingly also extends to the planar space-time scattering amplitudes of the N= 4 model, which show strong signs of Yangian invariance. However, in contradistinction to the spectral problem, this has not yet led to equations determining the exact amplitudes. We propose that the missing element is the spectral parameter, ubiquitous in integrable models. We show that it may indeed be included into recent on-shell approaches to scattering amplitude integrands, providing a natural deformation of the latter. Under some constraints, Yangian symmetry is preserved. Finally we speculate that the spectral parameter might also be the regulator of choice for controlling the infrared divergences appearing when integrating the integrands in exactly four dimensions. © 2014 The Author(s)
'Machines of Government': Replacing the Liberum Veto in the Eighteenth-Century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
'Machines of Government': Replacing the Liberum Veto in the Eighteenth-Century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Jerzy Lukowski The last century of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth saw a variety of proposals for modifying or replacing its notorious liberum veto the right of any individual envoy to its parliament, the Sejm, to terminate proceedings and nullify any legislation agreed. The most striking characteristic of these proposals was a greater or lesser degree of complexity. The veto was a simple device for the defence of supposedly almost timeless rights and privileges, which in their totality made up noble 'liberty'; replacement of the veto, and putting in adequate safeguards for noble freedoms, was to be anything but straightforward
A shortcut to the Q-operator
Baxter's Q-operator is generally believed to be the most powerful tool for the exact diagonalization of integrable models. Curiously, it has hitherto not yet been properly constructed in the simplest such system, the compact spin-1/2 Heisenberg-Bethe XXX spin chain. Here we attempt to fill this gap and show how two linearly independent operatorial solutions to Baxter's TQ equation may be constructed as commuting transfer matrices if a twist field is present. The latter are obtained by tracing over infinitely many oscillator states living in the auxiliary channel of an associated monodromy matrix. We furthermore compare our approach to and differentiate it from earlier articles addressing the problem of the construction of the Q-operator for the XXX chain. Finally we speculate on the importance of Q-operators for the physical interpretation of recent proposals for the Y-system of AdS/CFT. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd and SISSA
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
