Separating Skill from Luck in REIT Mutual Funds
This study uses a bootstrap methodology to explicitly distinguish between skill and luck for 80 Real Estate Investment Trust Mutual Funds in the period January 1995 to May 2008. The methodology successfully captures non-normality in the idiosyncratic risk of the funds. Using unconditional, beta conditional and alpha-beta conditional estimation models, the results indicate that all but one fund demonstrates poor skill. Tests of robustness show that this finding is largely invariant to REIT market conditions and maturity.

Protocol for stage 2 of the GaP study (genetic testing acceptability for Paget's disease of the bone) : a questionnaire study to investigate whether relatives of people with Paget's disease would accept genetic testing and preventative treatment if they were available
Background: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) disrupts normal bone architecture and causes pain, deformity, deafness, osteoarthritis, and fractures. Genetic factors play a role in PDB and genetic tests are now conducted for research purposes. It is thus timely to investigate the potential for a clinical programme of genetic testing and preventative treatment for people who have a family history of PDB. This study examines the beliefs of relatives of people with PDB. It focuses particularly on illness and treatment representations as predictors of the acceptability and uptake of potential clinical programmes. Illness representations are examined using Leventhal's Common Sense Self-Regulation Model while cognitions about treatment behaviours (acceptance of testing and treatment uptake) are conceptualised within the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Methods/Design: A postal questionnaire of non-affected relatives of people with Paget's disease. The sample will include relatives of Paget's patients with a family history of Paget's disease and relatives of Paget's patients without a family history of Paget's disease. The questionnaire will explore whether a range of factors relate to acceptability of a programme of genetic testing and preventive treatment in relatives of Paget's disease sufferers. The questionnaire will include several measures: illness representations (as measured by the Brief Illness Perceptions Questionnaire); treatment representations (as measured by Theory of Planned Behaviour-based question items, informed by a prior interview elicitation study); descriptive and demographic details; and questions exploring family environment and beliefs of other important people. Data will also be collected from family members who have been diagnosed with Paget's disease to describe the disease presentation and its distribution within a family. Discussion: The answers to these measures will inform the feasibility of a programme of genetic testing and preventive treatment for individuals who are at a high risk of developing Paget's disease because they carry an appropriate genetic mutation. They will also contribute to theoretical and empirical approaches to predicting diagnostic and treatment behaviours from the combined theoretical models.We wish to acknowledge the Medical Research Council for financial support of this study. Lung volume recruitment maneuvers and respiratory system mechanics in mechanically ventilated mice
The study aim was to establish how recruitment maneuvers (RMs) influence lung mechanics and to determine whether RMs produce lung injury. Healthy BALB/c mice were allocated to receive positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) at 2 or 6 cmH2O and volume- (20 or 40 mL/kg) or pressure-controlled (25 cmH2O) RMs every 5 or 75 min for 150 min. The low-frequency forced oscillation technique was used to measure respiratory input impedance. Large RMs resulting in peak airway opening pressures (Pao) > 30 cmH2O did not increase inflammatory response or affect transcutaneous oxygen saturation but significantly lowered airway resistance, tissue damping and tissue elastance; the latter changes are likely associated with the bimodal pressure-volume behavior observed in mice. PEEP increase alone and application of RMs producing peak Pao below 25 cmH2O did not prevent or reverse changes in lung mechanics; whereas frequent application of substantial RMs on top of elevated PEEP levels produced stable lung mechanics without signs of lung injury
Thresholds for adding degraded tropical forest to the conservation estate
Logged and disturbed forests are often viewed as degraded and depauperate environments compared with primary forest. However, they are dynamic ecosystems1 that provide refugia for large amounts of biodiversity2,3, so we cannot afford to underestimate their conservation value4. Here we present empirically defined thresholds for categorizing the conservation value of logged forests, using one of the most comprehensive assessments of taxon responses to habitat degradation in any tropical forest environment. We analysed the impact of logging intensity on the individual occurrence patterns of 1,681 taxa belonging to 86 taxonomic orders and 126 functional groups in Sabah, Malaysia. Our results demonstrate the existence of two conservation-relevant thresholds. First, lightly logged forests (68%) of their biomass removed, and these are likely to require more expensive measures to recover their biodiversity value. Overall, our data confirm that primary forests are irreplaceable5, but they also reinforce the message that logged forests retain considerable conservation value that should not be overlooked
Studies on soluble ectodomain proteins of relaxin (LGR7) and insulin 3 (LGR8) receptors
The ectodomains of both the relaxin (LGR7) and the INSL3 (LGR8) receptors can be expressed on the cell surface using only a single transmembrane domain. These membrane-anchored proteins retain the ability to bind relaxin and can be cleaved from the cell surface. The subsequent LGR7 protein, 7BP, binds relaxin and can act as a functional relaxin antagonist. By contrast, the equivalent LGR8 protein 8BP does not bind relaxin or antagonize LGR8 activity.
