No full text
The study shows that the elegiac poem "De vita quieta" by the Modenese humanist Bartolomeo Paganelli (printed in Reggio Emilia in 1487), almost forgotten for centuries, was instead an inspiring source for the greatest poets of the Este area: Ariosto , which greatly inspired you in the writing of the first and third of the "Satires"; and Tasso, which shows the memory in the "Aminta" (chorus of the first act). The occasion, besides offering itself propitious to shed new light on the personality and work of the author, is proposed as an exemplary case of the still poorly known, but strong influence exercised on the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance by the Latinistic humanistic literature, precious mediator between classic models and modern sensibility

Protocol for a Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Interventions to Reduce Exposure to Occupational Solar UltraViolet Radiation (UVR) Among Outdoor Workers

No full text
Background: Solar UltraViolet Radiation (UVR) is considered the most relevant occupational carcinogenic exposure in terms of the number of workers exposed (i.e., outdoor workers) and UVR-induced skin cancers are among the most frequent types of occupational cancers worldwide. This review aims to collect and evaluate all the available preventive interventions conducted on outdoor workers to reduce their solar UVR related risk, with the final purpose of reducing the burden of occupational skin cancers for outdoor workers. Methods: We will search the following databases for peer-reviewed original research published: MEDLINE (through PubMed), Scopus, and EMBASE. We will include only interventional studies, both randomized and non-randomized, with an adequate comparison group, therefore excluding cross-sectional studies, as well as case-reports/series, reviews, and letters/comments. The systematic review will adhere to the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses” (PRISMA) guidelines for reporting systematic reviews. After the literature search, studies to be included will be independently reviewed by two Authors, first based on title and abstract, then based on the full text, according to the inclusion criteria. Conflicts will be solved by a third Author. Two authors will independently extract the required data from included studies and perform quality assessment according to the relevant domain for Risk of Bias assessment proposed by the Cochrane collaboration group. In case of sufficient homogeneity of interventions and outcomes evaluated, results from subgroups of studies will be pooled together in a meta-analysis. Discussion: Following the principles for the evaluation of interventions for cancer prevention established by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, this systematic review will investigate the effectiveness of the interventions, and consequently it will provide reliable indications for the actual reduction of skin cancer incidence in outdoor workers

No full text
The book examines the fortune of the allegorical personifications in the Sixteenth Century, with particular reference to paintings and frescoes, moving from the analysis of the so-called Rothscild Carnet, a collection of 180 drawings with allegorical subjects by the painter Giovanni Guerra; the biography of the artist is the topic of the first part of the book. The chapters of the second parte are dedicated to the importance of the classical and pseudo-classical ekphrasis in the history of personifications ‘all’antica’, the fundamental part played by Giorgio Vasari in the codification of a a large repertory of personifications, and to the central figure of Franesco Salviati: Guerra was probably Salviati’s pupil. The Modenese painter executed the preparatory drawings for the woodcuts of the first illustrated edition of Cesare Ripa’s Iconologia (Roma 1603), and the book shade new light on the relations between Guerra and the author of that allegorical handbook. The book traces the fortunes of allegorical figures in the sixteenth century, with particular reference to the painting, starting from notebook Rothschild (Paris, Louvre), a series of more than 180 drawings of allegorical work of the painter Giovanni Guerra, whose biography is dedicated the first part. "Sempre di natura pigro e negligentissimo nello scrivere". Le lettere di Francesco Maria Molza

No full text
Starting from a review of the recent publication of Francesco Maria Molza’s letters edited by Andrea Barbieri (Padova, 2014), this paper offers a reading of the Modenese poet and humanist’s remaining correspondence. The paper contemplates Molza’s approach to the epistolary genre itself and Molza’s own consciousness not only of the literary and communicative importance of his letter-writing but also of its practical limitations and the inconvenience it caused, especially because it was considered a social duty. This line of attack enables the author to reconstruct a sort of ‘counter-poetic’ of the letters writing that Molza shared with Annibal Caro. The final section comments on Molza’s thoughts in the letters he sent to his son Camillo, which make up the most part of the collection, and especially his thoughts on the idea of “fortune”.

The Officina Emilia Initiative:Innovative Local Actions to Support Education and Training Systems

The issue of the regeneration of skills, in particular in the light engineering industry, is addressed by Officina Emilia (henceforth OE) as a crucial one in order to re-examine the interweaving of education, innovation and local development in the SMEs production systems. The project, aimed at the education and training systems, is designed to enhance the industrial culture in order to strengthen technical and scientific education. First sponsored in 2000 by the University of Modena & Reggio Emilia (Italy), over the last years OE has gathered the support of local actors dealing with the themes of training, culture, and local development. In 2009 it opened its museolaboratorio (“workshop-museum”) in which teaching activities promote an interest in the themes of work, technologies and the socio-economic development of the territory among the students and teachers of schools of all types and levels. The involvement of class groups, of teachers and other visitors takes place through active learning practices that foster motivation and develop a sense of belonging which is likely to lead to a more profitable educational experience, both secondary and tertiary, as well as to contribute to improving career prospects. Officina Emilia proposes innovative action on a local level, allowing for the implementation of effective teaching practices as well as the broadening and consolidation of best practices which might support a society-wide trend towards maintaining a high demand for a better quality of education and the ability to provide it. Ten years after the beginning of the initiative, with this paper we intend to open up the discussion on the various research issues and on the actions undertaken, focusing on the analytical tools and the main critical areas in the further implementation of the Officina Emilia initiative.Analysis of Education; Education Policy; Regional Development Policies; Innovation

Agricultural Genetics and Plant Breeding in Early Twentieth-Century Italy

No full text
This thesis is about plant breeding in Early 20th-Century Italy. The stories of the two most prominent Italian plant-breeders of the time, Nazareno Strampelli and Francesco Todaro, are used to explore a fragment of the often-neglected history of Italian agricultural research. While Italy was not at the forefront of agricultural innovation, research programs aimed at varietal innovation did emerge in the country, along with an early diffusion of Mendelism. Using philosophical as well as historical analysis, plant breeding is analysed throughout this thesis as a process: a sequence of steps that lays on practical skills and theoretical assumptions, acting on various elements of production. Systematic plant-breeding programs in Italy started from small individual efforts, attracting more and more resources until they became a crucial part of the fascist regime's infamous agricultural policy. Hybrid varieties developed in the early 20th century survived World War II and are now ancestors of the varieties that are still cultivated today. Despite this relevance, the history of Italian wheat hybrids is today largely forgotten: this thesis is an effort to re-evaluate a part of it. The research did allow previously unknown or neglected facts to emerge, giving a new perspective on the infamous alliance between plant-breeding programs and the fascist regime. This thesis undertakes an analysis of Italian plant-breeding programs as processes. Those processes had a practical as well as a theoretical side, and involved various elements of production. Although a complete history of Italian plant breeding still remains to be written, the Italian case can now be considered along with the other case-studies that other scholars have developed in the history of plant breeding. The hope is that this historical and philosophical analysis will contribute to the on-going effort to understand the history of plants

Italian proverbs in Northern Europe:Giacomo Castelvetro's work on the meaning of Italian Proverbs.

No full text
The manuscript GKS 2052 4° (which is accessible in a digital facsimile on the Royal Library’s website), contains a collection of Italian proverbs explained by Giacomo Castelvetro, the nephew of Ludovico Castelvetro: Il Significato D'Alquanti belli & vari proverbi dell'Italica Favella. It is dedicated to Niels Krag, who was ambassador of the Danish King to the Scottish court, and it is dated 6 August 1593. Castelvetro's collection of proverbs is a hitherto unknown work. It contains only a tenth of the number of proverbs listed in Gardine of recreation (1591) by John Florio, but by contrast Castelvetro's explanations can be used, on the one hand, as a means to an anthropological investigation of uses of the proverb in the 16th century, and on the other hand they give us information about the life of Giacomo Castelvetro. In the present article, the author explores the sources (both historical and literary) used by Castelvetro. The content of the manuscript is compared to the interest in proverbs shown by Castelvetro in his marginal annotations to printed books, and the provenance of the printed books and manuscripts from Castelvetro's library in the holdings of The Royal Library is discussed. It is finally argued that Giacomo Castelvetro's manuscript, Il Significato D'Alquanti belli & vari proverbi dell'Italica Favella, should be seen as yet another sign of a budding Italianism in Denmark in the era of Christian IV
