    Organizational Design with Portable Skills

    Workers learn from the tasks they perform, and in the process, they accumulate human capital that is potentially portable. Companies that cannot commit to specific task allocations may assign employees to tasks that reduce retention costs and do not maximize productivity. Equity partnerships may achieve efficient task allocation by distributing control and profit among partners, thus improving productivity. This analysis provides a novel rationale for the widespread presence of partnerships in professional service industries, their shift toward performance-based remuneration, and the conditions under which partnerships are more efficient than corporations with frictions like wealth constraints and asymmetric information

    Talent discovery, layoff risk and unemployment insurance

    In talent-intensive jobs, workers’ quality is revealed by their performance. This enhances productivity and earnings, but also increases layoff risk. We show that, if firms compete for talent, they cannot insure workers against this risk, so that the more risk-averse workers will choose less quality-revealing jobs. This lowers expected productivity and salaries. Our model predicts that public unemployment insurance corrects this inefficiency, increasing employment in talent sensitive industries. This prediction is consistent with the distribution of U.S. employment across occupations and states. Unemployment insurance dominates legal restrictions on firms’ dismissals, which penalize more talent-sensitive firms and thus depress expected productivity

    Corporate Governance, Meritocracy and Careers

    Firms may pursue non-meritocratic promotion policies at the cost of lower profitability, if they yield private benefits of control. Corporate governance standards that limit these private benefits favor meritocratic promotions, and thereby encourage workers' skill acquisition. Managerial incentive pay has ambiguous effects on workers' skill acquisition: it fosters the supply of skilled labor, while reducing firms' willingness to promote skilled workers to managerial positions. Social welfare increases with the share of meritocratic firms, but not necessarily with governance standards: small reforms generate losers and gainers, and may on balance lower welfare, while drastic enough reforms can generate Pareto improvements

    Integrating Digital Technology in University Mathematics Education to enhance Teacher Training

    he integration of digital technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics rep-resents an important area of study in mathematics education research [1--3], particularly at the university level, where traditional teaching methods remain common in pure mathematics courses. Our research is grounded in the theoretical framework of Tech-nological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), which emphasizes the complex interplay between content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and technological knowledge in effective teaching [4]. Additionally, we draw upon Ball et al.'s conceptu-alization of specialized content knowledge for teaching mathematics [5] and the docu-mentational approach to understand how teachers create and use digital resources [6,7]. Recent research has highlighted the potential of digital experiences in enhancing math-ematical cognitive functions [8] and in beginning to shape mathematics students' ped-agogical knowledge through the students' creation of digital documents in pure mathe-matics learning contexts [9]. This study investigates how mathematics students who have completed a mathemat-ics bachelor's degree and master's teacher education training conceptualize the use of digital technology, including AI, to enhance mathematical understanding and pedagog-ical practice. Specifically, we examine: (1) how students with prior experience in digital resource creation in pure mathematics courses, potentially with AI participation, differ from those without such experience in their perceptions of technology integration; (2) the development of students' technological pedagogical content knowledge through stu-dent-generated digital resources [10,11]; (3) the impact of these experiences on early mathematics teacher identity formation [12,13]

    Semantic processing of multimedia data for e-government applications

    Knowledge management has become a challenge for almost all e-government applications where the efficient processing of large amounts of data is still a critical issue. In the last years, semantic techniques have been introduced to improve the full automatic digitalization process of documents, in order to facilitate the access to the information embedded in very large document repositories. In this paper, we present a novel model for multimedia digital documents aiming at improve effectiveness of digitalization activities within an information system supporting e-government organizations. At the best of our knowledge, the proposed model is one of the first attempts to give a single and unified characterization of multimedia documents managed by e-government applications, whereas semantic procedures and multimedia facilities are used for the transformation of unstructured documents into structured information. Furthermore, we define an architecture for the management of multimedia documents “life cycle”, which provides advanced functionalities for information extraction, semantic retrieval, indexing, storage, presentation, together with long-term preservation. Preliminary experiments concerning an e-health scenario are finally presented and discussed
