Introduzione (a Media-Impresa.
A diverse altezze
Development and validation of odometric algorithms for railway control and monitoring systems [Sviluppo e validazione di algoritmi di odometria per sistemi di controllo e monitoraggio ferroviari]
Present railway systems need amomatica devices for train running control because of the high speed and the higher and higher safety, efficiency and reliability levels required. A fundamental part of these control systems is the so-called odometry that is the set of equipment and software procedures that allow to know with continuity position and speed of the running trains. The odomeiric system validation is carried out on the basis of a series of tests that have to reproduce the highest possible number of cases that could actually occur (degraded adherence conditions axle locking, fault of sensores, etc., This paper describes the operation principles of the control and monitoring systems that are presently in a development and implementation phase at both national level (SCMT system) and European level (ERTMS). Some possible solutions for the odometric system are then illustrated. A software model for train simulation is finally described; this model will be able to be utilized for the odomeiric system validation without resorting to trial runs or anyway reducing their neccessity
Long-lasting clinical, radiological and immunological remission of severe nasal polyposis by means of 'reboot' surgery
A 68-year-old woman with a long history of relapsing chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) underwent a complete reboot surgery and nasal biopsy prior to and after surgery. Remarkable improvement of symptoms and no signs of mucosal oedema and no complaints of initially worsening nasal functions were still present 12 months after reboot surgery. Biopsy demonstrated an outstanding reduction in eosinophilic infiltration and re-epithelisation of nasal mucosa with normal features after reboot approach compared with previous surgeries. Therefore, reboot approach may become an effective instrument in plurioperated patients with CRSwNP who suffer from a nasal condition that is recalcitrant to pharmacological therapies and is unsatisfactorily treated by standard surgical techniques
Angioneurotic edema of the upper airways and antihypertensive therapy
Angioneurotic edema is a non-pitting edema which is usually limited to the skin and the mucous membranes of the face and upper aerodigestive tract. The risk of acute upper airway obstruction makes angioneurotic edema a concern for emergency room physicians, internists and otolaryngologists because prompt recognition of the condition and immediate institution of therapy is essential for proper airway management. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have recently been associated with angioneurotic edema, the probable link being the reduction in angiotensin II and the potentiation of bradykinin, resulting in vasodilatation, increased vascular permeability and angioedema. We report four cases of acquired angioneurotic edema, which were probably related to ACE inhibitor use. These cases are discussed, including a review of the literature, methods of diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of angioedema. Care should be taken when antihypertensive ACE inhibitor treatments are started and patients should be warned of the potential risk of angioneurotic edema
Epiphora as a sign of unexpected underlying squamous cell carcinoma within sinonasal inverted papilloma
Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SIP) is a benign tumor which originates from the sinonasal Schneiderian mucosa and accounts for 0.5% to 4% of all nasal and sinus neoplasm [1]. Pathologically, SIP epithelium inverts into submucosal stroma, which is different from other types of nasal papilloma. Unlike other benign tumors, SIP exhibits remarkable aggressive behaviors, including invasiveness, recurrence and malignant transformation [2]. Therefore, SIP can spread into the paranasal sinus, orbit, and cranial base, which can lead to poor prognosis for SIP patients [2]. Secondary squamous cell carcinoma is malignancy formation within the SIP. It is considered primary if there is no additional mucosal condition or secondary if it occurs in conjunction with an additional condition, which is estimated to occur in about 9% of cases [3]. The authors report the case of a 66-year-old woman with SIP and secondary SCC of the right nasal cavity. This study was adherent with the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki
Rhythms of Visions. Three experimental films by Corrado D’Errico, in New Paths on Italian Experimental Moving Image
Stramilano (SuperMilan), Impressioni di vita n.1 (Impressions of life n. 1): Ritmi di stazione e (Rhythms of a Railway Station) and Rivista Luce (Luce Magazine) n. 2: Music – La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) are three short movies signed by Corrado D’Errico between 1929 and 1934. A multifaceted author, D’Errico (1902-1941) is deeply connected to the aesthetic theories of futurism and at the same time is measured with the coeval experimental and international film production
