Rich, Sturmian, and trapezoidal words
No full textIn this paper we explore various interconnections between rich words, Sturmian words, and trapezoidal words. Rich words, first introduced by the second and third authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer, constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by having the maximal number of palindromic factors. Every finite Sturmian word is rich, but not conversely. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by the first author in studying the behavior of the subword complexity of finite Sturmian words. Unfortunately this property does not characterize finite Sturmian words. In this note we show that the only trapezoidal palindromes are Sturmian. More generally we show that Sturmian palindromes can be characterized either in terms of their subword complexity (the trapezoidal property) or in terms of their palindromic complexity. We also obtain a similar characterization of rich palindromes in terms of a relation between palindromic complexity and subword complexity

No full textI resti di microvertebrati della tomba di San Luca Evangelista vengono attribuiti a oltre 20 individui di Coluber viridiflavus. Le datazioni radiometriche di alcuni resti di serpente forniscono la data calibrata AD 440 (Cal BP 1510). Si deve quindi ritenere che la cassa e le ossa di quello che si suppone lo scheletro di San Luca si trovasse già a Padova fra il quinto e la prima metà del sesto secolo. Questo è in accordo con la tradizione più antica che vuole l'arrivo delle sacre reliquie da Costantinopoli a Padova , per sottrarle alla furia distruttiva dell'imperatore Giuliano, nel 360

Da tempo era quindi sentita l'esigenza, sia da parte degli operatori commerciali che delle istituzioni, di effettuare una ricerca sul campo. Estimation of ordered response models with sample selection
No full textWe introduce two new Stata commands for the estimation of an ordered
response model with sample selection. The opsel command uses a standard
maximum-likelihood approach to fit a parametric specification of the model where
errors are assumed to follow a bivariate Gaussian distribution. The snpopsel
command uses the semi-nonparametric approach of Gallant and Nychka (1987,
Econometrica 55: 363–390) to fit a semiparametric specification of the model
where the bivariate density function of the errors is approximated by a Hermite
polynomial expansion. The snpopsel command extends the set of Stata routines
for semi-nonparametric estimation of discrete response models. Compared to the
other semi-nonparametric estimators, our routine is relatively faster because it
is programmed in Mata. In addition, we provide new postestimation routines
to compute linear predictions, predicted probabilities, and marginal effects. These
improvements are also extended to the set of semi-nonparametric Stata commands
originally written by Stewart (2004, Stata Journal 4: 27–39) and De Luca (2008,
Stata Journal 8: 190–220). An illustration of the new opsel and snpopsel commands
is provided through an empirical application on self-reported health with
selectivity due to sample attrition
