Asymmetric Information and Financial Crises: A Historical Perspective
No full textThis paper examines the nature of financial crises from a historical perspective using the new and burgeoning literature on asymmetric information and financial structure. After describing how this literature helps to understand the nature of financial crises, the paper focuses on a historical examination of a series of financial crises in the United States, beginning with the panic of 1857 and ending with the stock market crash of October 19,1987. The asymmetric information approach explains the patterns in the data and many features of these crises which are otherwise hard to explain. It also suggests why financial crises have had such important consequences for the aggregate economy over the past one hundred and fifty years.
A filosofia e seu ensino a partir de Rousseau: "se a verdadeira filosofia fosse inseparável do título de filósofo"
No full textResumo: O presente artigo apresenta uma compreensão sobre a filosofia no autor de Genebra, Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), a partir de suas críticas aos pensadores de sua época. Para o autor suíço tais pensadores estavam interessados em obter fama e reconhecimento em meio í República das letras. O posicionamento do escritor genebrino pode se traduzir no modo pelo qual ele resolve chamar a atenção para o distanciamento entre os discursos proferidos pela sociedade do século dezoito, caracterizados pelo otimismo exacerbado em relação à razão, e as ações cotidianas comumente envolvidas com o cultivo da vaidade humana e com a negação da virtude. Tal desconexão entre discurso e realidade resulta na infelicidade característica da vida de tais indivíduos. Assim, em meio a uma postura contestadora, é possível perceber que Rousseau aponta para o que seria o verdadeiro modo de ser da filosofia, a saber, enquanto um exercício do pensar que favoreça a experiência do autoconhecimento. Nesse sentido, a realização da atividade da filosofia deveria consistir no intento de conduzir o homem a conhecer-se para melhorar-se, para educar-se.

Abstract: The present paper emphasizes possible understanding of philosophy from the Geneva author, Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), from his criticism to the thinkers of his epoch. To the Swiss author highlighted here, such thinkers were interested in obtaining fame and recognition among the Republic of Letters. The positioning of the Genevan writer would translate in a way which it decides to raise awareness to the distance between the speeches given by the eighteenth-century society, characterized by exaggerated optimism in relation to the rationality, and the daily actions extremely involved in the diffusion of human vanity, denial of virtue and ultimately responsible for the unhappiness of individuals. Through a contesting posture, we can notice that Rousseau points to what would be the true way of being of philosophy as an exercise of thinking that furthers the experience of self-knowledge, in other words, that the realization of the activity of philosophy should be in order to lead the man to know himself to know, to know himself and to know enough for know yourself and know enough for yourself.

Inteligencia emocional emocional y personalidad como variables predictoras de la violencia de pareja
No full textEl presente estudio buscó identificar qué variable (inteligencia emocional - rasgos de personalidad) presentaba mayor predicción frente al fenómeno de violencia de pareja. La muestra está compuesta por 150 hombres y 150 mujeres estudiantes de la Universidad Santo Tomás sede Villavicencio, como criterio de exclusión estas personas debían encontrarse en una relación de pareja al momento de la aplicación y desearán participar de manera voluntaria. Diseño: cuantitativo de diseño no experimental expofacto prospectivo de grupo único. Instrumentos: Cuestionario de violencia para novios, Traint metal-mood scale-24 y big five inventory. Procedimiento: Se realizó la explicación del estudio a los participantes y se les dio entrega física del consentimiento informado y los instrumentos, una vez terminada la aplicación se analizaron los datos con el programa estadístico SPSS y se hizo la devolución de resultados a la Unidad de Desarrollo Integral de la universidad. Resultados: La variable que más genera predicción frente a la violencia de pareja es el rasgo de personalidad amplitud, los rasgos de personalidad que más se presentan es afabilidad amplitud y meticulosidad; en inteligencia emocional la dimensión que obtiene mejor puntuación dentro de los participantes es la de reparación.

The sample is taken from 150 men and 150 women students from Santo Tomás University Villavicencio; as barring criteria, those people had to be part of a relationship at the time of the implementation and volunteered themselves to participate. Design: quantitative non-experimental design, prospective single-‘expofacto’ group. Instruments: boyfriend-girlfriend violence questionnaire, Traint metal-mood scale-24 and big five inventory. Procedure: The study was clarified to participants and they were also given the written consent and instruments; once the application was finished, the data were analyzed with the SPSS statistical program and the results were turned in to the Integral Development Unit of the university. Results: The variable that promoted the most prediction against intimate partner violence was the personality amplitude pattern, the most visible personality patterns were affability, breadth and meticulousness; in regards of emotional intelligence, the dimension that obtained the highest score among all the participants was reparation.

The portrait of the author ends up by also being made up of an abundant iconographic apparatus, of the over five hundred critical texts listed, and of her complete work. Spain and the First World War : neutrality and crisis.
No full textPhDThe subject of this thesis is a study of Spain during
the First World War. The Spanish case is analyzed as the regional
version of the general crisis which engulfed the rest of Europe
during these years. This crisis was produced by the ideological
militancy and social struggle caused by four years of
devastating international conflict. It heralded the arrival of
mass politics which put an end to a previous era marked by
hierarchical and clientelist politics.
This thesis examines how the maintenance of strict
neutrality did not save the existing regime in Spain from the
impact of the conflict raging in Europe. Spain did not enter the
war but the war entered the country and, ironically, a conflict
in which Spain did not take part was to alter its contemporary
history.
The analysis explores the gradual disintegration of the
foundations of the ruling system, the Liberal Monarchy restored
in December 1874, during and as a consequence of the First World
War. Considerable attention is paid to the impact and importance
of the war in producing the decay of the Liberal Monarchy. This
process is examined at two levels: the political polarization and
subsequent division of the country which was provoked by the
debate about belligerence or neutrality, and the social and
economic transformations that Spain underwent as consequence a
of its privileged position as a supplier to both sides. The
result was galloping inflation, widespread social discontent and political turmoil. Under these pressures, the hegemonic system,
based on electoral falsification, widespread patronage and mass
apathy, collapsed and gave way to an inexorable process of
growing working class and right-wing militancy which led to the
military coup of 1923
