Jego kompozycje inspirowane często (choć nie tylko) filozofią Dalekiego Wschodu można określić mianem filozoficznych traktatów perkusyjnych, podnoszących tematy bytu, przemijania. No full textAmong many musical genres, one of the most important places is passion. The contemplations of the Passion of Christ through various means of expression have for many years been centered around two works by Johann Sebastian Bach: Passion according to St. John and according to St. Matthew – which are the original and deep musical interpretations of this genre. In the twentieth century the greatest composers referenced to this tradition, among them Krzysztof Penderecki (Passio et mors Domini Nostri Iesum Christi secundum Lucam, 1966), Paweł Mykietyn (The Passion according to St. Mark, 2008), expanding arsenal of musical means of expression to the level of 20-age-old expression. Contemporary composers introduced to the passion music, among others. percussion instruments, whose sound from the dawn of history was connected with various forms of sacrum. This article deals with Carminie Crucis by Stanisław Moryto – a work in which the sounds of elaborate percussion sets talk about the passion of Jesus Christ. The author – active drummer, apart from the analysis of individual parts of the cycle, devotes much attention to executive issues, presenting readers with ready technical and interpretative solutions.Pośród wielu gatunków muzycznych jedno z najważniejszych miejsc zajmuje pasja. Rozważania Męki Pańskiej czynione za pomocą rozmaitych środków wyrazu, przez wiele lat koncentrowały się wokół dwóch dzieł Jana Sebastiana Bacha – Pasji wg Św. Jana i Pasji wg. Św. Mateusza – będących oryginalnymi i głębokimi muzycznymi interpretacjami tego gatunku. W wieku XX do pasyjnej tradycji odwoływali się najwięksi kompozytorzy, w śród nich Krzysztof Penderecki (Passio et mors Domini Nostri Iesum Christi secundum Lucam, 1966), Paweł Mykietyn (Pasja wg Św. Marka, 2008), rozszerzając arsenał muzycznych środków wyrazu na miarę XX-wiecznej ekspresji. Kompozytorzy współcześni wprowadzili do muzyki pasyjnej m.in. instrumenty perkusyjne, których brzmienie od zarania dziejów związane było z rozmaitymi formami sacrum. Niniejszy artykuł traktuje o Carminie Crucis Stanisława Moryto – dziele, w którym dźwięki rozbudowanych zestawów perkusyjnych opowiadają o męce Jezusa Chrystusa. Autor – czynny perkusista, oprócz analizy poszczególnych części cyklu wiele uwagi poświęca zagadnieniom wykonawczym, przedstawiając czytelnikom gotowe rozwiązania techniczne i interpretacyjne.LESZEK LORENT – perkusista, doktor habilitowany sztuki muzycznej, laureat krajowych i międzynarodowych konkursów. Jest wykładowcą Uniwersytetu Muzycznego Fryderyka Chopina, gdzie kieruje Studium Muzyki Nowej. Specjalizuje się w realizacji partytur multiperkusyjnych oraz dzieł teatru instrumentalnego. Coordination of gene expression programs
No full textMost cellular processes depend on the activity and interactions of proteins. The proteome, i.e. the entire set of proteins in a specific condition, is shaped by regulation of transcription, mRNA-degradation, -processing, -storage, -translation and protein degradation. Cancer cells are known to highjack gene expression processes, including the translation machinery, for their growth and survival. This occurs as a result of converging oncogenic signaling pathways which impinge on translation factors to selectively modulate synthesis of cancer-related proteins.Our understanding of mechanisms by which oncogenic pathways dynamically control their targets' translational activity is limited and could be extended by transcriptome-wide studies of changes in translation efficiency. In Paper I, we developed anota2seq which allows for statistical analysis of such data. Using a simulation approach, we showed that anota2seq constitutes an improvement compared to other methods for identification of genes under translational regulation.The relative contribution of transcriptional and translational regulation to proteome modulation has been extensively debated. This raises the interest in studies integrating data on multiple levels of gene expression regulation. In Paper II, we study the role of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), a transcription factor that is commonly targeted in hormone-dependent cancers, in coordinating transcriptional alterations with control at the level of translation. Upon ERα depletion in a prostate cancer model, we observed massive translational offsetting whereby the translational output remains unchanged despite changes in mRNA levels. To characterize mechanisms underlying translational offsetting, we extended the scope of the anota2seq method (Paper I) to also identify genes regulated by this underappreciated mode of gene expression regulation. Next, our detailed mechanistic study revealed that upon ERα depletion, mRNAs whose levels are reduced but translationally offset have less structured 5'UTRs and are devoid of miRNA target sites and thus cannot be influenced by such translational repressors. In contrast, transcripts which were upregulated but offset at the level of translation are enriched in codons requiring U34-modified tRNAs for their translation. We finally demonstrated that ERα impacts the levels of such modified tRNAs.Cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease. In our studies of translational control, we are reaching the limits of reasonable inference when extending conclusions from experiments in cell lines into clinical settings. However, experimental methods to quantify translatomes such as polysome-profiling, are not suitable for samples with low RNA input such as tissue samples from cancer patients. Paper III presents an optimization of the polysome-profiling method, compares it with the classical approach and validates that this new approach is suitable to study novel mechanisms regulating mRNA translation in large collections of tissue samples.List of scientific papersI. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textImage resizing is frequently used as a preprocessing step in many computer vision tasks, especially in medical applications. While tuning of the resizing method is usually omitted in the studies, there are many problems in which the exact influence of resampling on image textures and gradients is significant. The paper presents an in-depth analysis of image reconstruction's impact on two inherent tasks in medical image analysis: segmentation and classification. The proposed study is conducted on the renal diagnosis dataset in which the kidney is segmented, and three renal tumours are classified. A novel image reconstruction method is introduced, namely Sampling Kantorovich Algorithm (SKA). It is compared to six other popular techniques widely used in image processing. Based on the qualitative and quantitative analyses, we proved that choice of image reconstruction method impacts the system's overall performance. SKA turns out to be the best performing method in the classification setup. It boosts performance to 75% of the weighted F1-score by approximately 3 percentage points (pp) compared to the best baseline solution. In kidney segmentation, the SKA improves efficiency by over 2pp compared to other resizing methods. The results presented in this paper may apply to a wide range of medical image processing problems
