    No full text
This article analyzes the deployment of military firefighters in humanitarian operations based on the performance of the Brazilian force in MINUSTAH, it seeks to understand the lessons learned from the group of firefighters sent to Haiti and how this performance contributed to the insertion of more Brazilian firefighters in international cooperation for peace. The hypothesis that guided the article was “the lessons learned in the work of Brazilian military firefighters in MINUSTAH promoted the intensification of the capabilities and performances of the Ministry of Defense, aiming to deploy more groups in humanitarian or peace operations”. The methodology is based on a bibliographical and descriptive research, based on the experiences of Brazilian military firefighters in activities following the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) doctrine

David Scheffer, Northwestern University School of Law, former U.S. Ambassador at Large for War Crimes Issues Summary: Traditionally Lawfare was defined as a strategy of using—or misusing—law as a substitute for traditional military means to achieve an operational objective. But lately, commentators and governments have applied the concept to International Criminal Tribunals, the defense counsel\u27s tactics challenging the detention of al Qaeda suspects in Guantanamo Bay, and as indicated in the quote above to the controversial Goldstone Commission Report. This symposium and Experts Meeting, featuring two-dozen leading academics, practitioners, and former government officials from all sides of the political spectrum, will examine the usefulness and appropriate application of the Lawfare concept

ABSTRACT The operation of fire fighting and rescue with boats carried out by the Military Fire Brigade of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) is one of the oldest activities of the corporation. What would be CBMERJ's responsibility towards the Brazilian Navy? The article aims to systematize the activities involving the vessels and understand the current technical-operational capacity of the facilities installed, as well as the responsibility for serving the entire maritime community. For the construction of this knowledge, an analysis of the current legislation was carried out, ranging from international to national legislation, and a description of the administrative and operational processes in the activities with vessels was elaborated, with interviews with authorities of the Brazilian Navy and the Corps. Firemen. Thus, it seeks to point out points to be improved so that resources can be used together and more efficiently

Genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus Refining the spectrum

    No full text
Objective: Following our original description of generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS1) in 1997, we analyze the phenotypic spectrum in 409 affected individuals in 60 families (31 new families) and expand the GEFS1 spectrum. Methods: We performed detailed electroclinical phenotyping on all available affected family members. Genetic analysis of known GEFS1 genes was carried out where possible. We compared our phenotypic and genetic data to those published in the literature over the last 19 years. Results: We identified new phenotypes within the GEFS1 spectrum: focal seizures without preceding febrile seizures (16/409 [4%]), classic genetic generalized epilepsies (22/409 [5%]), and afebrile generalized tonic-clonic seizures (9/409 [2%]). Febrile seizures remains the most frequent phenotype in GEFS1 (178/409 [44%]), followed by febrile seizures plus (111/409 [27%]). One third (50/163 [31%]) of GEFS1 families tested have a pathogenic variant in a known GEFS1 gene. Conclusion: As 37/409 (9%) affected individuals have focal epilepsies, we suggest that GEFS1 be renamed genetic epilepsy with febrile seizures plus rather than generalized epilepsy with febrile seizures plus. The phenotypic overlap between GEFS1 and the classic generalized epilepsies is considerably greater than first thought. The clinical and molecular data suggest that the 2 major groups of generalized epilepsies share genetic determinants.National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia [628952, 1091593, 466671, 1006110, 1104831, 1032603, 1063799]SCI(E)ARTICLE121210-12198

Open destinies : modern American women and the short story cycle

    No full text
This thesis examines the juncture between the short story cycle form and gender politics. It explores how twentieth-century women from the United States have been using the form to represent and question gender identity. The introduction outlines commentaries on the story cycle and considers definitions of the form. It includes case studies of earlier twentieth-century cycles by American women: cycles such as Mary McCarthy's The Company She Keeps that have been passed over by critics of the form. Chapter One presents Eudora Welty's The Golden Apples as a cycle paradigm, examining conventions such as the form's metafictional dimension and its preoccupation with communal identity. Chapter Two argues that Grace Paley's scattered Faith narratives set a standard for more dispersed versions of the form. Chapter Three considers how Joyce Carol Oates uses the sequential cycle to represent gender identity as a social construct. Chapters Four and Five examine the macrocosmic cycles of Gloria Naylor and Louise Erdrich and consider changes in their form and gender politics. The final 'composite' chapters explore postmodern versions of the form such as Susan Minot's Monkeys. The prose works of Sandra Cisneros stretch across the story cycle continuum, whilst Toni Morrison's Paradise is universally regarded as a novel. Readings of contemporary cycles by Melissa Bank, Elissa Schappell and Emily Carter demonstrate that American women are re-invigorating the form to facilitate the plural identity of the postmodern heroine
