Aspects of power and history in the dictator novels by Alejo Carpentier, Augusto Roa Bastos and Gabriel García Márquez

    No full text
The thesis constitutes a study of aspects of power and history in the novels Yo el Supremo by Augusto Roa Bastos, El Recurso del Metodo by Alejo Carpentier and El Otono del Patriarca by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The first part (chapters 1 and 2) presents an analysis of how the idea of power appears in the narrative, by comparing the three works. The second part (chapters 3, 4 and 5) examines the notion of history in the novels, yet each chapter deals mainly with one of the books mentioned. Chapter 1 investigates the relation between the structure of power and patterns of dependency experienced by the countries described in the novels. It gives evidence of contrasts in the dictators' actions. While the Primer Magistrado and the Patriarca merely want to retain their personal power, even if this results in the growing dependency of their nations on foreign powers, El Supremo uses his power precisely to avoid the economic subordination of Paraguay, whose sovereignty suffered continuous menace. Chapter 2 examines three aspects of power. The first is a study of the dictators' solitude and shows that it represents the immediate consequence of despotism, being the price of power. The second is about the role of the double, revealing that he serves to intensify the accumulation of power. And the third aspect is the analysis of how the dictators maintain their power through persistent violence. Chapter 3 analyses Carpentier's use of history in his works, particularly in El Recurso del Metodo. His worldview is revealed in the development of his works through failed revolutions. However, this fact does not indicate pessimism, as hope of effective change appears through the character of the Student. The other section compares the transformations occurring in the historical epoch and their fictional correlation. Yet, the author presents history in a literary way through the use of humour. Chapter 4 discusses history in El Otono del Patriarca. The study focuses upon the lack of historical consciousness in Garcia Márquez’s characters, and also in some of Carpentier's. In both is established the failure to understand history as a process, due especially to the repression of past memories and the false perspective of circular time. The chapter stresses, however, that this is the characters' view, not the authors'. Chapter 5 studies Yo el Supremo in a historical perspective. The novel is a counter-history of Paraguay showing that the official version of history is frequently warped by ideology. Thus, the chapter compares Roa Bastos's view on EI Supremo to the historians'. It also shows the relation between past, present and future which establishes the series of "necessary anachronisms" (according to Hegel) characterizing the narrative, and revealing the author's dialectical world vision

T he Chile Project investigates what the author describes as “Chile’s paradox”: the nation’s intricate relationship with the neoliberal economic and political framework. The study begins by tracing the adoption of neoliberal policies during Augusto Pinochet’s regime and their subsequent evolution under democratic administrations, culminating in the 2019 insurrection and the 2021 election of President Gabriel Boric, committed to dismantling those neoliberal policies, as these events reflect widespread dissatisfaction with the neoliberal model

This work is titled The dispute on the memory of the death of the Roman Emperor Julian Augustus, the so-called “Apostate”, as it was expressed during the 4th and 5th centuries AD. This dissertation analyzes the way which the author Milan Kundera created the character named Tamina, who is the protagonist in his novel The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, presented as an exile representation, therefore, as a source of several references to this theme throughout the book. This paper explains how this novel, which was written in seven apparently disconnected parts, manages to remain cohesive by placing the character Tamina in a central position, leading the other narrative nuclei to connect to her. Thus, this paper offers an analysis perspective of the protagonist, who incorporates the historical moment of the narrative as well as the existing political issue around the former Czechoslovakia in that period

This work attempts to tell the life story of southern-sudanese native Kueth Duany, of how the war expelled him from home when he was still a child, of how he grew up as a refugee in a multi-ethnic building in the United States, of how he became a basketball star and of what he thinks of the future of the recently-founded Republic of South Sudan. To do so, the author sought to tell, interweaved with Kueth’s experience as a refugee in the USA, a little bit about the political events that caused the war that separated him from his home in Sudan. To better comprehend Kueth’s experience and that of his people, the author also sought to reflect on subjects such as war, imperialism, exile and identity

Romania's evolving legal framework for private sector development

As the economies of Central and Eastern Europe move from central planning and state ownership to market-driven development of private sector activity, they are undertaking comprehensive change in the"rules of the game", the legal framework for economic activity. The authors analyze the evolving legal framework for private sector development in Romania. The government has worked intensively in the last two years to create a legal framework for a market economy. It has adopted not only a new constitution but also extensive new legislation covering real and intellectual property, companies, and foreign investment. It has revived the pre-war civil code as a basis for contract law, and is moving to modernize its bankruptcy code. The only area surveyed in which little legal reform has occurred is antimonopoly law. Challenges remain in both law and practice. The broad principles of private ownership, free market exchange, and equal treatment of public and private firms are well recognized and have been largely achieved. But a tendency towards centralized, bureaucratic control remains in excessive requirements for approval and uneconomic limits on certain activities. Moreover, implementation will take a long time because there is little or no institutional framework for enforcement and dispute resolution. Developing a body of regulation and case practice will take time.Environmental Economics&Policies,National Governance,Legal Products,Banks&Banking Reform,Real&Intellectual Property Law

    Lincoln Silva, iconoclasta

    No full text
Lincoln Silva, iconoclastLincoln Silva is one of the Paraguayan writers outshone by Augusto Roa Bastos and Gabriel Casaccia. Being an author of two novels, Rebelión después and General, general, he displays his belonging to Rafael Barrett’s “journalism of accusation,” originated at the beginning of the 20th century. In general, Silva can be considered an anarchist who does not agree with Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorial system and criticizes the institution of the Church and its language. The proletarian revolution and politics itself become another subject of his criticism. Silva opposes the dictator but does not consider satisfactory the possible governance of the opposition. He ridicules the topics of the Paraguayan culture without offering concrete solutions. He refuses the concepts but does not intend to be constructive. Just as Cassacia’s protagonists, all the characters created by Silva are pulled into ethically ambiguous situations and they can be possibly interpreted as “esperpentic.”Lincoln Silva, iconoclastLincoln Silva is one of the Paraguayan writers outshone by Augusto Roa Bastos and Gabriel Casaccia. Intertextualidade Bíblica em Trilhos de Um Peregrino, de Carlos Cabombo, O Outro Livro de Job, de Miguel Torga, e Os Poemas Possíveis, de José Saramago

    No full text
The present paper aims to explore the biblical substrate in the books Trilhos de um Peregrino, from Carlos Cabombo, O Outro Livro de Job, from Miguel Torga, and Os Poemas Possíveis, from José Saramago, which fall within the scope of intertextual relations. The motivation to produce this study lies in the fact that these authors are all from different nacionalities, periods and styles, but have the Bible as matrix. The intertextual process happens when a certain author takes up part of someone’s text. This process doesn’t only arise through literary texts (endoliterary), but also unfolds in plastic arts, music, sculpture (exoliterary) or is even more complex: if a painting is linked to a certain text which at first don’t belong in the same culture. In the case of endoliterary intertextuality, the most common cases of revival or opposition appear more frequently through allusions, paraphrases, quotations and parodies. In order to determine the degree of connection, we have to take into account the number or references with which the new text allude to the previous one, which will allow to identify if the connexion is explicit or implicit

El destino epistolar de García Márquez

    No full text
Through access to the Gabriel García Márquez correspondence between 1961 and 1971, it is now possible an understanding of what the author named the destiny of his “epistolary literature”: that of the demythologization of his work and his lifetime. Far from being dissappointing, the end result is an adjacent version of myths and stories told over the decades, a version in the double genre of testimony and nonfiction. Three myths are intended to be dispelled: that of the pauperized writer, One Hundred Years of Solitude as a spontaneous generation work and the self-proclaimed anti-intelectualism of the author.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) database on ionization potentials for neutral atoms and ions is examined. For each isoelectronic sequence, we construct a regularized perturbative series based on the large-Z and Zâ Nâ 1 behaviors. Comparison of the NIST data with this series allows the identification of problematic values in the reported data. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
