Thefact that the number of poets in this century in thetezkires and in the sources of literary is more thanever; history shows that this strong traditionentered into the last century with a greataccumulation. In particular, religious orders continued toexist as one of the centers of literary activitiesbesides their religious and mystical missions. Atthe same time, widespread religious orders such asHalvetism and Naqshbandi sustained the traditionof divan poetry even in the farthest regions ofAnatolia, and became an institution where thepoets trained. In this study, the life of eyh ZiyâeddinTa kesenî, who became famous with his mysticidentity in Erzurum and its surroundings in the19th century, was discussed; his poems of theclassical style detected in a magazine were studiedin detail in terms of form, content, language andstyle by transferring them to Latin letters. Thus, theliterary personality and poems of ZiyâeddinTa kesenî, who had a sufistic personality andcommitted his gazels to paper completely in theframe of classical poetry tradition, will also beintroduced to the world of literature

Despite the fact that he is partly known with his works he performed in the field of literary history, the author also has a spirit of poesy which needs to be studied in detail.Although Sadeddin Nüzhet entered the literary life with poems he wrote in his student years, later he got further away from this genre and devoted himself to scientific research. Despite this, his poems which were published in newspapers and magazines such as Milli Mecmua, Yeni Fikir, Kervan and he wrote with syllable and syllablemetrics are works of art showing that his literary character is also strong. Especially his gazels he created under the influence of divan poetry provided to be accepted him as one of the last representatives of tradition. In this works, Sadeddin Nüzhet s life was studied as part of the identity of his sufi, composer, compiler, literary historians; his poetidentity and his poems are also emphasized. After giving general information about his works, the poems that were determined were examined as form and content, presented to the reader as a whole at the end of the work. Thus, by pointing to a different as pect of Sadeddin Nüzhet, who can not see the value he deserves in the literary community, his work has been tried to be shown in terms of the divan poetry tradition

The benthic algae of the River Itchen : with particular reference to epilithic algae and epiphytic algae on selected macrophytes

Benthic algae in the River Itchen were studied for 2 years at Otterbourne where the river is about 16 m wide and 21 cm deep, with a mean flow rate of 0.33 m/s and a discharge ranging through the year from 0.34 to 2.46 m3/s. The River Itchen rises from chalk springs and has a steady pH near 8.2 and a mean alkalinity of 236 mg HCO-3/1. Epilithic algae removed from the small stones that form the stream bed showed a seasonal change in abundance and species composition. The chlorophyll a content of these algae ranged from 115 to 415 mg/12 of stream floor, with maximum values in April and a minor peak in autumn. Estimates of organic biomass based on chlorophyll values gave a mean of 7.6 mg C/m2, and reflect an estimated production of epilithic algae of 230 g C/m2 of stream floor, derived from an average generation time of nearly 2 days. Numbers of algal cells ranged from 5 x 102 to 7 x 103 cells mm2 stream floor, with highest densities in spring. Diatom dominate the epilithic flora, comprising 85-95% of all algae, but highest numbers of chlorophytes occurred in summer and cyanophytes increased in autumn. The principal plants providing substrates for epiphytic algae in this part of the river were Ranunculus penicillatus var calcareus and Cladophora glomerata. Ranunculus tended to be washed out by winter spates, but grew rapidly in spring, decreased in summer and grew again in autumn. Numbers of epiphytes removed from Ranunculus varied through the year from 52 x 103 to 271 x 103 cells/mm2 stream floor, with maximum values in April. Diatoms represented 65-98% of these cells, with chlorophytes and cyanophytes increasing through summer and autumn. Estimates of biomass were more difficult for these epiphytic forms, but measurement of chlorophyll c values suggests an approximate mean biomass of 38.5 g/m2, and a cautious estimate of about 1185g C/m2 stream floor for the annual production of epiphytes on Ranunculus. Cladophora showed an annual cycle in which it almost disappeared in summer, but grew vigorously in autumn, was partly washed away in winter and grew again in spring. Numbers of epiphytes ranged from 3 to 22 x 103 cells/mm2 stream floor, with a spring maximum, representing a estimated annual production of about 276 g C/m2 stream floor. Diatoms were again the principal epiphytic algae; these and the other algae were mostly of the same species on both host plants, with many of the species also being epilithic. Levels of nitrate (ca 4 mg/1), phosphate (ca 80 μg/1) and silicate (ca 4 mg/1) remained high throughout the year in the River Itchen, and are not thought to have limited algal growth. It is likely that grazing insects exert an important influence on algal numbers, especially on the stones. Numbers of chironomids, ephemeropterans and plecopterans range from 2 to 21 x 10^4/m^2 stream floor. Large numbers of algae occur in the guts of these insects, and it is calculated that they consume up to half of the epilithic algal production in June, when they are at their peak, rather lower amounts in other seasons; insects probably have a lesser impact on epiphytic algae. The benthic algae of a nutrient poor, acidic stream in the New Forest, the Ober Water, was studied as a comparison. The numbers and biomass of epilithic algae were much lower than the River Itchen, and different species were present, although several species were common at both sites. (D73655/87)</p

Son dönem şairlerinden Ahmed Râşid'in (1844-1934 sonrası), Medine kadılığı yaptığı dönemde Şeyhülislam Arif Hikmet'in (ö.1859) kütüphanesinde rastladığı “Pend-nâme-i Lokmân Hekîm Cihet-i Ferzend” adlı Farsça eserdeki 32 nasihati beşer beyit halinde Türkçe'ye tercüme ettiği “Pend-nâme-i Lokman Hekim Terceme-i Manzûmesi” adlı mesnevisi bu edebî ürünlerden biridir. Çalışmamızda, şahsî kütüphanemizde bulunan, H.1324/M.1906 yılında İstanbul'da basılmış bu eserin tanıtımı ve Arap harflerinden Latin alfabesine aktarımı yapılacaktır

Anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory effects of medicinal plants in a type 2 diabetic animal model

    No full text
Medicinal plants have been suggested since ancient times to be a good source of drugs for treating diabetes. The aims of this thesis were to identify the anti-diabetic effects and to understand further the mechanisms involved for two traditional plants, borapetol B (C1) isolated from Tinospora crispa, and Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP), in diabetic rats. The effects of GP extract on innate immune mechanisms in the urinary tract were also investigated. In Paper I, an oral administration of C1 significantly decreased blood glucose levels and increased plasma insulin levels in treated rats, compared to placebo groups, in both Wistar (W) and diabetic Goto Kakizaki (GK) rats. C1 dose-dependently increased insulin secretion from W and GK rat islets. In perifusions of W and GK rat islets, insulin secretion was increased by C1 in low and high glucose, and returned to basal levels when C1 was omitted, indicating that the compound did not cause leakage of insulin by damaging islet beta cells. This study provides evidence that C1 possesses anti-diabetic properties mainly due to its stimulation of insulin release. In Paper II, when exploring the mechanisms of insulin release in W and GK pancreatic islets we showed that the C1 effect was partly via K-ATP channels, since the potassium channel blocker diazoxide partly but not totally suppressed C1 stimulation at 16.7 mM glucose. The C1 effect was also dependent on L-type Ca2+ channels, since the calcium blocker nifedipine suppressed the insulin response to C1 at 16.7 mM glucose. There was no modulation by PKA and PKC inhibitors. Furthermore, the C1 effect was partly dependent on pertussis toxin sensitive Ge-protein. Therefore, the major stimulatory effect of C1 might be on the process of exocytosis. In Paper III, two weeks’ treatment with GP extract in GK rats significantly improved blood glucose, plasma insulin levels and insulin secretion from islets isolated from the treated rats. Furthermore, when tested in vitro, GP extract dose-dependently stimulated insulin release from the isolated rat islets at high glucose concentrations. GP-induced insulin release is partly mediated via K-ATP and L-type Ca2+ channels. The effects of GP were also mediated via the PKA system, and partly dependent on pertussis toxin sensitive Ge-protein at high glucose concentrations. In Paper IV, ex vivo infection experiments demonstrated that the pro-inflammatory response to E. coli was attenuated in bladder tissue from diabetic GK rats receiving GP extract, compared to untreated rats. In vitro assays using uroepithelial cells challenged with E. coli corroborated these results. Moreover, GP treatment modulated the expression of antimicrobial peptides. With these properties, GP might be a beneficial supplement for diabetic patients with a history of urinary tract infection.List of scientific papersI. Ezarul Faradianna Lokman, Harvest F.
