    Hybrid Method for Soil-Structure Interaction for Offshore Wind Turbine Monopile Foundations

    The Offshore wind industry is constantly expanding and one of the key cost drivers is the offshore wind turbine support structure. The foundation accounts for up to 35 % of the total installation cost of the wind turbine. The monopile foundations are the most commonly used support structure with diameters up to 6m and Embedded length/depth (L/D)<7. Proper modeling of the soil-structure interaction (SSI) is important for safe and efficient design. With the introduction of large diameter rigid monopile foundations, the applicability of the current design standard is in question. The current industry standard model for SSI for laterally loaded monopiles is the Winkler foundation model. In this model, the soil is idealized as a row of one dimensional discrete springs spanning along the beam. The stiffness of these springs is obtained using empirically derived p-y curves, which gives the relation between the soil-pressure (p) and deflection (y). The p-y method describes the construction of the p-y curves for any arbitrary set of soil parameters. This method has been applied in the oil and gas industry and is based on field tests conducted on slender piles with diameter 2m. Various studies on the applicability of the model have shown to give erroneous results for large diameter monopiles. Since the soil is idealized as a row of discrete (local) springs, it neglects the continuous (non-local) nature of soil. Additionally, monopiles with L/D <7 exhibit a more rigid behavior and hence industry standard assumptions for laterally loaded piles with respect to vertical tangent criteria and 'zero-toe-kick' do not hold on. A plane strain semi-analytical model is developed which considers the continuous (non-local) nature of soil as well as the soil below the pile toe/tip, which could be significant to the dynamic behavior of the monopile foundations. In this approach, the pile is modeled as an elastic rectangular plate which is discretized using modified Euler-Bernoulli beam elements. and the soil is modeled as an elastic continuum waveguide. The two entities are combined via the discretized interface. Assuming wave motion in soil, semi-analytical solutions satisfying homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are obtained for the waveguide, which are used to derive the frequency dependent soil stiffness matrices at the interface. These are then coupled to the plate. For the current study, the L/D ratio of the plate is restricted to the flexible regime, due to the availability of a comparable reference solution in this regime. It is shown that, with L/D ratio of 12.5 already, the dynamic behavior of the plate is sensitive to the soil below the tip. Therefore, with smaller L/D ratios, it is expected that the tip will have a significant influence on the dynamic behavior of the pile

Lac cultivation is an important livelihood for the forest and sub-forest people of the country including Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Odisha. Rain tree is an attractive, large, semi deciduous popular avenue tree with an umbrella-shaped crown. The tree also yields reddish-brown colored gum from its bark. The gum is of inferior quality and can be used as an adhesive. Recent surveys and past reports suggest that Rain tree may serve as an important host for lac cultivation thorough out India.Not Availabl

    MOLECULAR DIVERSITY ANALYSIS OF FLOWER COLOUR VARIANTS OF BUTEA MONOSPERMA (LAM.) TAUB. USING INTER SIMPLE SEQUENCE REPEATS

    Butea monosperma is the most important host tree for the rangeeni strain of lac insect, Kerria lacca, exploited commercially in India for lac cultivation. Six flower colour variants of B. monosperma viz., scarlet, yellow, golden yellow, chrome yellow, white and mustard colour were collected from different regions of Jharkhand. Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) marker system was employed to investigate the genetic structure and diversity among these flower colour variants. Out of 45 ISSR primers, 12 were found to be informative generating 127 scorable bands. A maximum of 19 and a minimum of 7 scorable bands per primer were obtained. The resolving power of the primers ranged between 2 and 11.3. Average polymorphic band percentage for all the primers was 85%. The marker index ranged from 2.9 to 15.85. The estimated Jaccard similarity coefficient ranged from 0.35 to 0.52. The clustering analysis using Jaccard’s coefficient showed 2 clusters; first - yellow and golden yellow and second - mustard, scarlet, chrome yellow and white flower colour variants

    Not AvailablePigeonpea, Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. is one of the good host plants for lac cultivation in North East India, besides being an important pulse crop. The correct identification of genotype is highly required to reap the benefits of the given pigeonpea genotype. This study was conducted in ten pigeonpea genotypes known for either grain yielding or lac yielding properties and collected from different regions of the country. The genotypes were analyzed with 20 RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) primers. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean dendrogram constructed based on Nei’s genetic distance clustered high lac yielding and high grain yielding genotypes to certain extent. Few RAPD locus, specific for certain genotypes, especially the high lac yielder, Assam local 1 were obtained. Those loci have the potential to be generated as diagnostic SCAR (Sequence Characterized Amplified Regions) markers that could be accurate and reliable marker for identification. The conversion of dominant and random RAPD markers to codominant and specific SCAR marker offers a simple and reliable tool for the genetic identification of genotypes. Molecular markers identified from these approaches that are associated with desired traits would be helpful for the selection of elite germplasm of pigeonpea for lac cultivation and high yield of pulses.Not Availabl

Many plant species and their products, especially resins and gums, have been used by people through Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) to cure several ailments, including complex diseases, for ages. Due to the probable side effects of modern drugs, the trend for using traditional medicines is increasing. Natural resins and gums (NRGs), which are mostly exudated from plants to heal their injuries, comprise a balance of nutrients, energy, and various phytoactive compounds and hence possess high medicinal values. It is required to document know-how related to the use of herbal products so that they can be scientifically established for exploring their potential. This review discusses the medicinal benefits of important natural resins and gums to highlight their potential and popularity as a medicine

    Construction and demolition waste management in India: A case study of Ahmedabad city

    Ahmedabad is the largest city in the state of Gujarat and the 5th largest in India in terms of population. It is one of the most important economic and industrial hubs in India. Additionally it is one of the fastest growing cities in India, leading to large infrastructural projects including metro rail and river front. Construction is also increasing in the peripheries of the city with an anticipation of better connectivity in the future. Increase in construction activities has led to increase in generation of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste in the city over the years. The present paper studies C&D waste management model followed in the city. To get a scientific understanding of the waste, the C&D waste was characterized and analyzed for suitability in product diversification. Results obtained from the study showed that high quality non-reinforced concrete products can be produced from complete replacement of natural aggregates by C&D based recycled aggregates. Additionally, recycled products manufactured using C&D waste are cheaper compared to market rates of products made with virgin aggregates

    Not AvailableKerrialacca (Kerr), a sap sucking insect, is widely grown commercially on Butea monosperma (Palas), Schleicheraoleosa (Kusum), Ziziphusmauritania(Ber) and Flemingiasemialata in India. Lac insects secrete resin, wax and dye for self-protection, which have numerous applications in different fields. Lac cultivation is one of the major sources of income for the tribal community of the country. Kusmi lac insects is specific to India and contribute good quality and quantity lac. Lac insects live on nutrient-poor diets of phloem sap; hence to compensate for other important nutrients they have evolved obligate associations with microorganisms. Endosymbionts are supposed to have various roles in insect development and physiology. Some bacteria consociates with lac insects have been identified and understood, but several remain unknown. Our objective is to identify the diversity and variation of endosymbiotic bacteria in kusmilac insects grown on kusum, berandsemialatausing molecular methods. We followed culturing method to isolate bacterial endosymbionts from kusmi lac insects from different host plants. 16S rDNA of the bacterial isolates were amplified and sequenced for their identification, which could be used to decipher their role in lac insects. This study shows ten different bacteria to be associated with lac insects and differences in the bacterial species from lac insects grown on different host plants. Our study would contribute to a broader understanding of the diversity of endosymbionts and their symbiotic associations with lac insects.Not Availabl
