Dynamics in electron-impact ionization of H(2)O

    No full text
We present multiply differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of the water molecule. The experimental results are compared with theoretical cross sections calculated using a recently developed distorted-wave Born approach for molecules. The experimental cross sections exhibit a very large recoil scattering, which is not predicted by the theory. This has implications for applications of this theoretical approach in areas such as modeling of ionization in biological systems.D. S. Milne-Brownlie, S. J. Cavanagh, Birgit Lohmann, C. Champion, P. Recent theoretical progress in treating electron impact ionization of molecules

(e,2e) ionization differential cross sections are presented for several molecules. We will compare experimental results with theoretical calculations using the molecular three body distorted wave (M3DW) approximations for H2, N2, H2O and Formic Acid (FA) using better wave-function for the molecules than we had in previous works. Generally, good agreement is found between the M3DW approach and experiments.Ola Al-Hagan, Chuangang Ning, Kate Nixon, Andrew Murray, Christopher Colyer, Mark Stevenson, Birgit Lohmann and Don Madiso

Coplanar symmetric (e,2e) cross sections for krypton 4s ionization

Copyright © Institute of Physics and IOP Publishing Limited 2003The triple-differential cross section for electron impact ionization of the 4s orbital of krypton (binding energy 27.5 eV) has been measured in coplanar symmetric kinematics. The experimental results are presented for outgoing electron energies of 85, 50, 20, 10 and 4 eV. The results are compared with two distorted wave Born approximation calculations; the influence of post-collision interaction (PCI) on the cross sections is investigated by incorporating correct final state boundary conditions in one of the calculations. The influence of PCI is found to be very important at the lower energies. Inclusion of the three-body final state boundary conditions improves the agreement between theory and experiment, but there are still significant discrepancies, indicating that additional physical effects (such as higher-order interactions) are important at lower energies.Matthew A Haynes, Birgit Lohmann, A Prideaux and D H Madiso

Mirror Landing - As Remembered by Birgit Hult

Notes - This account, Memories Mirror Landing by Birgit Hult, was compiled by Birgit's daughter, Jean Elvira Male, it documents the Hult family's experiences in Mirror Landing from 1912 - 1916. The Hults, who were originally from Sweden, arrived in Mirror Landing with two young children, a third child was born during their stay in Mirror Landing. Upon arriving in the area, the Hults made friends with the Gauthier family. The wives became good friends and would swap piano lessons for English lessons. Details of the log home where the family lived and the surrounding landscape were recalled. A memory about a large forest fire that occurred near the family home and dances that were attended in the town are discussed. Jean recalls her mother's memories regarding the animosity towards the North West Mounted Police that was felt by the people of Mirror Landing. The Hult family retained a strong connection to the Swedish heritage and practised many Swedish traditions, such as flying the Swedish flag and eating hot cross buns stuffed with Swedish Marzipan soaked in warm milk. Photos and a postcard written in 1915 are included in this article (10 pages

Knowing Through Popular Music in the Western Pacific Island World

    No full text
Pacific Indigenous scholars have long emphasized the role of relationality for Pacific Islanders’ epistemologies. In this article, the author rethinks music in terms of the procedural knowledge inherent in and specific to popular music-making by exploring the latter as knowledge practices in Micronesia. This approach opens new vistas on the relationality at the heart of Western Pacific music-making. The author calls the musical manifestation of that relational capacity sound ties, suggesting that if, following Epeli Hau‘ofa, Oceania is “humanity rising from the depths of brine”, then it is not least the sound ties of knowing in and through music that mould that very humanity of people who are at home with the sea into aquapelagic assemblages that are, after all, so much more than water and land

Coplanar symmetric (e, 2e) cross sections for argon 3s ionization

Copyright © Institute of Physics and IOP Publishing Limited 2001The triple differential cross section for electron impact ionization of the 3s orbital in argon (binding energy 29.3 eV) has been measured in the coplanar symmetric geometry. The measurements have been performed at incident energies of 129.3, 69.3, 49.3 and 37.3 eV. This corresponds to detecting two equal outgoing electrons with energies of 50, 20, 10 and 4 eV. Comparisons with previous measurements for ionization of the 3p orbital of argon under the same kinematic conditions show significant orbital-dependent effects.Matthew A Haynes and Birgit Lohman

    EU-Behörde: Warum wir sie brauchen

Jan Cremers (UvT) contributed to the magazine Gute Arbeit (in German), published by BUND-Verlag. Together with co-author Birgit Krämer, he discusses the plans of the European Commission to introduce a European Labour Authority. They reflect on the possible contribution of such a body in checking respect for and compliance with labour legislation and conventional standards

    Gender and European Integration

    No full text
The paper assesses the contribution of gender approaches to understanding Europeanintegration. It offers a conceptualization of such approaches as including a distinctontology, epistemology and methodology. While feminist literature on the EuropeanUnion is diverse, all such literature sheds light on the gendered process of Europeanintegration. The authors identify two distinct contributions of this literature: (a) itillustrates the relevance of movement actors and other advocates in shaping EU policies;(b) it shows that economic integration entails the creation of new gender regimes. Thepaper illustrates these contentions presenting case studies of the EU’s response to sextrafficking, the reform of the common agricultural policy, and of enlargement.

Comparative study of argon 3p electron-impact ionization at low energies

    (c) 2001 The American Physical SocietyAn experimental and theoretical study of electron-impact ionization of the 3p orbital in argon is presented. The (e,2e) technique was used to measure the relative triple-differential cross section for this process in the coplanar asymmetric geometry. The experimental results were obtained at an incident electron energy of 113.5 eV, a scattering angle of 15°, and ejected electron energies of 10, 7.5, 5, and 2 eV. The experimental data are compared with a distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculation, and also with previous results for argon 3s ionization obtained under identical kinematic conditions. Discrepancies between the experimental and theoretical data are attributed to the effects of charge-cloud polarization and higher-order scattering processes, which are not incorporated in the DWBA calculation.Haynes, Matthew A. and Lohmann, Birgi
