Evaluation of Maize (Zea mays L.) Varieties for Moisture Stress Areas
Maize is priority crop to farmers because it is a stable food in many rural communities of southern region. It is widely grown in the various parts of southern region from lowland to mid-highlands. On other hand, moisture stress is one the most critical production constraints of maize in low to intermediate agro-ecology. Thus, developing maize varieties tolerant to moisture is of paramount important in order to sustain maize production in moisture areas. In this content, field experiments were conducted during 201617 cropping at Kindo Koyisha and Humbo with objective to select adaptable maize varieties for moisture stress with reasonable grain yield. Treatments used in this study were eight maize varieties (BH546, BH547, Gibe II, MH130, Melkasa IV, MH140, Melkasa II and Melkasa 6Q) and three local cultivars (Local red, Local mixed and Local white) of total of eleven maize genotypes were evaluated at two moisture prone areas in southern Ethiopia. Treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Maize varieties exhibited difference performance at two tested locations. Varieties had relatively superiority of performance Kindo Koyisha as compared to Humbo. At Humbo varieties MH140, MH130 BH546 and Melkasa IV gave relatively higher grain yield. At Kindo Koyisha maize varieties expressed relatively better performance with respect to grain yield. At this location varieties with superior performance with sounding grain yield were BH546, MH140, BH547 and MH130. Based on this result BH546, MH140 and MH130 could be used at both locations. Moreover, BH547 at Bale and Melkasa IV at Humbo also could used to respective locations for production. Sweet Potato Agronomy Research in Ethiopia: Summary of Past Findings and Future Research Directions
Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) is economically important food crop in Ethiopia. Since its introduction, numerous agronomic research activities were carried out in agricultural research centers, non-governmental organizations and universities. The objective of this piece of work is to document available research findings in a usable manner and present it to first national sweet potato workshop held between 6-7 June 2013, SARI head quarter, Awassa, Ethiopia. Agronomic research has been carried out on preparation of planting materials, curing vine cuttings, planting methods, depth of planting, plant density, planting time, cropping systems, and etc. Results showed that sweet potato crop has a potential of 50 to 60 t/ha in Ethiopia and the length of vines to be used for planting shall be 30 to 40 cm. Weeding trials elaborated that weeding twice on 30-40DAS and 70DAS regardless of the study sites would suffice for the crop. Planting date experiments justified early planting with the onset of rainfall in non irrigated fields. However, the results of population density and fertilizer regimes varied across locations and varieties. Thus generation and promotion of site specific recommendations are of paramount importance for root crops like sweet potato
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Resposta de variedades aprimoradas de feno-grego (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) ao oídio (erysiphe polygoni) e sua avaliação de desempenho em condições de campo naturais na zona de Wolaita, no Sul da Etiópia
Powdery mildew is one of the most important diseases that constrain fenugreek production and productivity in fenugreek-growing areas of Ethiopia where mid to high land environmental conditions prevail. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the performance and response of six fenugreek varieties to powdery mildew under field conditions in the Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia, in the 2020/2021 cropping seasons. The treatments consisted of six released fenugreek varieties that were laid out in an RCBD with three replications. Disease severity was assessed as the proportion of leaf area affected by the disease on 10 randomly selected plants in the middle two rows. The AUDPC was estimated from the percent severity index. The results revealed that the terminal disease severity varied from 27.00 to 48.67PSI at Sodo Zuria; and 23.67 to 57.33PSI at Damot Gale, respectively. AUDPC varied from 530.80 to 907.07%-days in Sodo Zuria and from 341.80 to 668.50%-days in Damot Gale. The varieties Bishoftu, FG-10, and Challa exhibited high disease severity and high AUDPC and were categorized as susceptible fenugreek varieties. It is concluded that under field conditions, different fenugreek varieties responded differently to powdery mildew, and the disease severity was strongly affected by the use of different resistance levels of fenugreek varieties and differences in the environmental conditions. It is, therefore, promising to use the two varieties, such as Ebbisa and Hunda, which were considered resistant under field conditions and that are recommended to be used by farmers in the study areas and elsewhere with similar agroecologies in Ethiopia.O oídio é uma das doenças mais importantes que limitam a produção e produtividade do feno-grego nas áreas de cultivo desse vegetal na Etiópia, onde prevalecem condições ambientais em regiões de média a alta altitude. Assim, este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar o desempenho e a resposta de seis variedades de feno-grego ao oídio em condições de campo na Zona de Wolaita, Sul da Etiópia, durante as safras de 2020/2021. Os tratamentos consistiram em seis variedades de feno-grego lançadas, dispostas em um delineamento de blocos casualizados com três repetições cada. A gravidade da doença foi avaliada como a proporção da área foliar afetada pela doença em dez plantas selecionadas aleatoriamente nas duas fileiras do meio. O AUDPC foi estimado a partir do índice percentual de gravidade. Os resultados revelaram que a gravidade final da doença variou de 27,00 a 48,67 PSI em Sodo Zuria e de 23,67 a 57,33 PSI em Damot Gale, respectivamente. A progressão da doença, medida pela Área Abaixo da Curva de Progresso da Doença, variou entre as localidades. Em Sodo Zuria, o AUDPC variou de 530,80 a 907,07%-dias, enquanto em Damot Gale, a variação foi de 341,80 a 668,50%-dias. As variedades Bishoftu, FG-10 e Challa apresentaram alta gravidade da doença e alto AUDPC, sendo categorizadas como variedades suscetíveis de feno-grego. Conclui-se que, em condições de campo, diferentes variedades de feno-grego responderam de maneira diferente ao oídio, e a gravidade da doença foi fortemente afetada pelo uso de diferentes níveis de resistência das variedades de feno-grego e diferenças nas condições ambientais. As variedades Ebbisa e Hunda demonstraram resistência promissora ao oídio em condições de campo, sendo altamente recomendadas para cultivo por agricultores nas áreas de estudo e em outras regiões da Etiópia com condições agroecológicas similares
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
