The article is appropriate to support the publication of the dataset. The authors used standard methods, well described and referenced. The data presented represent a novelty in the field, so that the potential application and correlation with direct investigations and researches conducted in the area appears obvious to the terrestrial permafrost scientific community.
The dataset is competitive and accessible via the given Zenodo identifier. The state of the art in data collection and processing is adequately described. The dataset is significant, useful and complete.
The dataset is usable in its current format and size. Adequate space is used to describe the data, their organisation and possible processing, including appropriate examples. The overall structure of the paper is well organised and clear. A minor revision of the language is suggested.
About uniqueness, costly data sets such the one supported by the authors are not easily replicable for financial reasons.
Variations in permafrost conditions due to climate change are strongly influencing Arctic hydrology, although the implications are not yet well understood. Such a dataset could help to better frame the high quality research area around Ny-Ålesund and open the way to advanced multidisciplinary knowledge. Some minor revisions are suggested in the Supplement document attached
Groundwater Distribution and Fluoride Content in the West Arsi Zone of the Oromia Region (Ethiopia)
In several areas of the world, water distribution and quality influence the local development; moreover water sometimes exceeds the World Health Organisation (WHO) drinking water limits, even if anthropogenic contamination is not present. As example, in the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley water distribution influences agriculture and breeding, as well as high concentration of many chemical elements should have a consequence on human health. The present study, carried out by the Department of Earth Science of the University of Turin in cooperation with LVIA, allowed a better understanding of the main hydrochemical features and groundwater distribution in the south-centre of the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley (MER). The research consisted in a census of the main water point (springs and wells) in the District of Shashemene, Arsi Negelle and Siraro; each of them have been examined with field instruments so that main physical features of the water and fluoride content have been defined
Hydrochemical, biogeochemical, and sedimentological data from sediment samples, Ny-Ålesund 2022
In August and September 2022, a sediment sampling and site investigation program was conducted near Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard. With the Bayelva Observatory having monitored permafrost temperatures for more than 25 years, the AWIPEV research station serves as an ideal hub for studying the effects of climate change on permafrost degradation. The samples were collected to quantify the physical properties of the permafrost and the active layer. This data package contains two sets of samples: Ny-Ålesund-alpha (eight samples) and Ny-Ålesund-beta (38 samples). Each set includes data on gravimetric moisture content and standard sedimentological properties (carbon and nitrogen content, grain size). Additionally, the Ny-Ålesund-alpha dataset includes sample volumes, volumetric moisture content, and hydrochemical data (electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved carbon, and nitrogen) for selected samples
Conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) cast for a lake on Kvadehuken, Ny-Ålesund 2022
In August and September 2022, a sediment sampling and site investigation program was conducted near Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard. With the Bayelva Observatory monitoring permafrost temperatures for over 25 years, the AWIPEV research station serves as an ideal hub for studying the effects of climate change on permafrost degradation. As part of a site reconnaissance program, we visited a lake on Kvadehuken, approximately 10 km northwest of Ny-Ålesund, situated below the Late Weichselian Marine Limit. A standard conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) casting device was deployed to measure the lake's physical properties
Organic contaminant data from sediment samples, Ny-Ålesund 2022
In August and September 2022, a sediment sampling and site investigation program was conducted near Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard. With the Bayelva Observatory monitoring permafrost temperatures for over 25 years, the AWIPEV research station serves as an ideal hub for studying the effects of climate change on permafrost degradation. The samples were collected to quantify the presence of organic contaminants in the sediment. These data provide a baseline for modeling organic contaminant distribution in the active layer and the top of the permafrost near Ny-Ålesund, allowing for comparison with other Arctic areas. This data package contains organic contaminant data for 35 sample
The edition is accompanied by an introduction on the author and the manuscript tradition of his work, the translation of the poems and a detailed commentary, divided into metrical analysis, an introductory presentation and explanatory notes to the verses
La tutela del passeggero nella disciplina Euro-unitaria e nella giurisprudenza della Corte di Giustizia
Starting from the four EU regulations governing the rights of passengers in the various modes of transport in the event of cancellation, long delay and denied boarding, the Author asks whether the numerous rulings of the Court of Justice, which have made it possible to resolve numerous interpretative problems raised by various provisions of the oldest regulation – i.e. EC Regulation No 261/2004 on air transport – have or have not influenced the legislator in the drafting of subsequent regulations. Furthermore, the Author, considering the future prospects of EU regulation on passenger rights also in the light of the EU Commission’s recent proposal to amend the four regulations, wonders whether the time is ripe for uniform regulation in the different modes of transport
The morphology of –ly and the categorial status of ‘adverbs’ in English.
The author challenges the traditional assumption of derivational morphology which accords adverbial –ly derivational status and gives adverbs lexical category status on a par with nouns, verbs and adjectives.
The author argues that adverbial –ly, unlike its adjectival counterpart, is inflectional and adverbs ending in –ly are rather to be regarded as inflected adjectives while those adverbs not containing –ly are uninflected adjectives; “adverbs cannot be categorially distinct from adjectives” (p. 342-343)
Convenience in Funding Upgrading Works
With reference to upgrading actions on existing building stock, Construction Procurement Guidance, No.7 Whole Life Costs (Office of Government Commerce) states: ‘All procurement must be made solely on the basis of value for money in terms of the optimum combination of global costs and quality to meet the user’s requirements’. Cash-flow analyses allow showing the economic value of investments for alternative technological upgrading works extended all along their service lives. Optimisation of choices is not only a matter of cash-flow analyses—choices should not be made only according to the lowest costs but also considering several aspects that can be brought back to the concept of ‘technical-sustainable value’, which mainly derives from competent functional and environmental assessments of the reference analysis system. The mentioned interrelation should theoretically be adequately considered but this is seldom the case in the common building practice. Cost estimate for an engineered system has to entail much more detailed analyses on costs, energy, sustainability and technologies. Possible technological solutions would be convenient in terms of technological/technical utility, but less convenient in monetary terms for the funding subject. Under the economic point of view, cash outflow means less economic convenience in funding a given technology. All that stated above, nowadays effective data-display global cost-quality indicators are rarely available in literature. The present manuscript introduces to the reader fundamentals of an economic tool proposal designed by the author with the use of synthetically displaying interrelations between cash-flow scenarios and quality-sustainability in upgrading processes on existing buildings. Fundamentals have been tested on a reference case study. Then, fundamentals have been contextualized to the Italian Legislative framework: in Italy, in multi-owner existing residential buildings, expenditure allocation is carried out based on thousandths. The thousandth type to be considered is due to the configuration of the case under review and to balance-sheet expenditure to be allocated to owners. Property thousandths allocated to housing units have been used to allocate expenses for technological/energy upgrading works. The author has tried to find out the amount of a possible bank investment that a user might start at building Time ‘0’ to theoretically clear possible economic losses, trying to highlight technical utility of the technological solution that would be disadvantaged in economic terms. ‘Neutral’ mathematical finance formulas have been used to calculate the theoretical capital to be invested by an owner based on the reference cash-flow scenario. Conclusion will be drawn at the end of the manuscript
Decostruire il mito. Jewishness e Americanness nei romanzi di Philip Roth
This paper aims to analyze how the American Jewish author Philip Roth
(1933-2018) confronts the burden of his ethnic origin and, at the same time,
problematizes the question of Americanness. In the novels of the American
Trilogy (1997-2000), Roth highlights the implications of this double identity
by creating characters who strenuously work to erase their religious
and ethnic origins to fulfill their American Dream. This paper focuses on the
author’s use of one of the founding myths of American democracy, individualism,
and the many different ways through which Roth builds and celebrates
this myth as he simultaneously aims at deconstructing it
