    The economic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, a macroeconomic analysis

    This report estimates the macroeconomic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the economy of New Jersey using the R/ECON™ forecasting model of the state’s economy. The model consists of more than 250 quarterly time-series equations and 30 employment sectors.The analysis takes into account both the economic losses resulting from the hurricane and the offsetting positive economic impacts associated with recovery and reconstruction spending in the months and years following the storm.However, the estimates of impacts depend upon the restoration expenditures actually being made. If the funds for these restoration and recovery expenditures are not made available, the offsetting positive impacts to the economy will not occur and the New Jersey economy will be significantly damaged.     In this article author Nancy Hatch presents a geographical and historical account of the town of Buckfield, Oxford County; Maine, that elaborates a model of center-village development constructed by Joseph Wood in his The New England Village, and a model of connected farm buildings, as constructed by Thomas Hubka in his Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn. Hatch uses these models to explain how Buckfield responded to the growth of inter-regional agricultural markets in the mid-nineteenth century and to new architectural styles that appeared on the national scene in these decades. Ms. Hatch was a student at the University of Southern Maine at Lewiston-Auburn College when she wrote this paper under the direction of Professor Barry Rodrigue

He began his study of the violin as a child, and became an avid chamber music player as a teenager. He went on to study under the auspices of Guido Adler and Arnold Schonberg at the University of Vienna, but WWI interrupted his studies. After serving in the military from 1915-1918, he returned to his academic pursuits and received his doctorate in Music and History from Vienna University in 1920. From 1919 to 1925, Braunstein performed as a violinist and violist in several orchestras, among them the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Staatsoper, where he had the honor of working with famous conductors such as Richard Strauss, Felix Weingarten, Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwangler and Otto Klemperer.Braunstein was also a prolific author and published several monographs as well as hundreds of articles in newspapers, magazines. From 1928-1938 he wrote for the official “Radio-Wien” and lectured extensively. He has supplied record liner notes for Vox, Vanguard, RCA, Book of the Month Club, Decca Records, and was the program note annotator for inter alia the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.In addition to his love of music, Braunstein was an avid mountaineer and loved the Alpine regions of his native Austria. In fact, he was never able to attend performances at Bayreuth because of scheduling conflicts with his mountaineering expeditions. He climbed over 60 peaks in Europe above the 13,000 ft elevation mark, among them Mount Blanc and Matterhorn. He also published articles on mountaineering in Alpine Club magazines, such as the Oesterreiche Bergzeitung, and contributed to the Der Grosse Brockhaus encyclopedia’s entry on Alpinismus.In 1940 Mr. Braunstein fled the Nazis with his wife Emma (nee Gross). Their first stop was Italy, from whence they continued on to New York, were they settled in 1940. Joseph became the reference librarian at the music division of the New York Public Library, and in the 1950s he began teaching music history at Julliard School, the Mannes School for Music, and the Manhattan School of Music. In 1961 he began a 20-year association with Frederic Waldman, the founder of the chamber orchestra Musica Aeterna, assembling programs that often included rarely heard works. His wife Emma, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis, died in 1966.Braunstein passed away in 1996 at the age of 104.See also the Joseph Braunstein Collection, AR 25072

    While European restaurants race to footnote menus, reassuring concerned gourmands that no genetically modified ingredients were used in the preparation of their food, starving populations around the world eagerly await the next harvest of scientifically improved crops. "Mendel in the Kitchen" provides a clear and balanced picture of this tangled, tricky (and very timely) topic. Any farmer you talk to, could tell you that we've been playing with the genetic makeup of our food for millennia, carefully coaxing nature to do our bidding. The practice officially dates back to Gregor Mendel - who was not a renowned scientist, but a 19th century Augustinian monk. Mendel spent many hours toiling in his garden, testing and cultivating more than 28,000 pea plants, selectively determining very specific characteristics of the peas that were produced, ultimately giving birth to the idea of heredity - and the now very common practice of artificially modifying our food. But as science takes the helm, steering common field practices into the laboratory, the world is now keenly aware of how adept we have become at tinkering with nature - which in turn has produced a variety of questions. Are genetically modified foods really safe? Will the foods ultimately make us sick, perhaps in ways we can't even imagine? Isn't it genuinely dangerous to change the nature of nature itself? Nina Fedoroff, a leading geneticist and recognized expert in biotechnology, answers these questions, and more. Addressing the fear and mistrust that is rapidly spreading, Federoff and her co-author, science writer Nancy Brown, weave a narrative rich in history, technology, and science to dispel myths and misunderstandings. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 129-132).Classical risk-based or game-theoretic security models rely on assumptions from reliability theory and rational expectations economics that are not applicable to security threats. Additionally, these models suffer from serious deficiencies when they are applied to software-intensive, socio-technical systems. Recent work by Leveson in the area of system safety engineering has led to the development of a new accident model for system safety that acknowledges the dynamic complexity of accidents. Systems-Theoretic Accident Models and Processes (STAMP) applies principles from control theory to enforce constraints on hazards and thereby prevent accidents. Appreciating the similarities between safety and security while still acknowledging the differences, this thesis extends STAMP to security problems. In particular, it is applied to identify and mitigate the threats that could emerge in critical infrastructures such as the Air Transportation System. Furthermore, recommendations are provided to assist systems engineers and policy makers in securely transitioning to the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS).by Joseph R. Laracy.S.M

    J.C. Bach's London keyboard sonatas : style and context

    J. C. Bach's keyboard works include several sets of accompanied sonatas, a genre that enjoyed a wide popularity during the Classical era, but never found its way into the concert repertoire. The accompanied sonata was a genre meant for domestic performance; the solo keyboard sonata, on the other hand, was adopted in due course by concert audiences. J. C. Bach composed works within both genres during most of his productive years, and his output constitutes a corpus of remarkable consistency. J. C. Bach's removal to London in 1762 coincided with his clear adoption of a galant style, marked by the Italianate influence, and the abandonment of most Baroque traits. The British milieu provided additional factors: the rise of the pianoforte, a thriving music-publishing market, and a great interest in domestic music making among the affluent classes. These factors marked J. C. Bach's output at various levels. Keyboard works had to conform to the proficiency of the amateur performer, a fact reflected in the accompanied output mostly. The number of movements, their length, and the inclusion of particular technical devices are readily observable differences between the two genres. The most remarkable distinction lies perhaps in the preference for binary sonata format in the accompanied. sonatas from the mid 1760s to the 1770s, in spite of a later tendency for tripartite designs in both genres. J. C. Bach's lifelong preference for motivic phrase structure conditioned his keyboard production and partly explains the gap in quality between some of his works and sonatas composed around the same time by Haydn and Mozart, who developed more effective means to connect the melodic material to higher structural units. J. C. Bach's influence, however, endured in Mozart's handling of melody, and his keyboard production constitutes, in spite of some flaws, a noteworthy example of elegance and craftsmanship
