Nursing Home Registered Nurses' and Licensed Practical Nurses' Knowledge of Causes of Falls

    No full text
Reducing falls in nursing homes (NHs) requires a knowledgeable nursing workforce. To test knowledge, 8 validated vignettes, representing multifactorial fall causes were administered to 47 nurses from 3 NHs. Although Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) scored higher than Registered Nurses in individual categories of falls, when we computed the average score of all 8 categories between groups of RNs’ versus LPNs’ we found RNs scored higher (F value =4.106; p<0.05) in identifying 8 causal reasons for older adults to fall. This is a non-final version of an article published ahead of print in Journal of Nursing Care Quality, October 7, 2015, and available at: https://dx.doi.org/10.1097/NCQ.0000000000000157Peer reviewe

ABSTRACT Currently, the use of biomarkers for breast cancer (BC) has been proposed, such as sialic acid (SA), which has been shown to be a characteristic feature in the saliva of these patients. Within its multifactorial etiology, the use of hormonal contraceptives (HA) has increased worldwide, it is known that prolonged exposure to both exogenous and endogenous estrogens can favor its development, and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) have also been found related to its biosynthesis and metabolism, one of them in the ESR1 gene that codes for estrogen receptors, called rs3020314. In this work, AS concentrations (analyzed by Raman SERS) and the SNP rs3020314 (using real-time PCR) were evaluated as risk biomarkers in 13 patients with BC and 30 healthy women. The mean SA concentration for patients was 18.15 mg/dL and 5.51 mg/dL for the control group. For the evaluation of the SNP, the frequency of genotypes was obtained, the most frequent variant for both study groups was heterozygous (CT), followed by mutated heterozygous (TT) for patients and wild-type homozygous (CC) for the control group. A multivariate analysis was performed through logistic regression to identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for CaMa associated with the presence of the ESR1 gene SNP. In agreement, with these results, no association was found between these risk factors and the presence of the SNP.Currently, the use of biomarkers for breast cancer (BC) has been proposed, such as sialic acid (SA), which has been shown to be a characteristic feature in the saliva of these patients. Nothing is Normal, Everything is Normal:Disruption and Continuity in Guayaquil’s Pandemic Experience

    No full text
This chapter offers a critical reflection on the meanings of the “new normal” in Ecuador. Our analysis focuses on the first months of 2020 as they transpired in Guayaquil, the Andean country’s economic capital. The experience of Guayaquil offers a compelling opportunity to address some of the issues raised by the discourses of normality in a time of crisis. We explore how the pandemic caused an unprecedented disruption in the imaginary configurations of everyday life in Ecuador while, at the same time, it facilitated the continuity of patterns of gender-based violence normalised in Ecuadorian society. In this light, we argue that the pandemic shaped a context where what was “new” and what was author proofs “normal” coexisted and clashed simultaneously to articulate a paradoxical order that was disruptive and continuous at once

This presentation incorporated the live performance throughout, by the author, of movement from “The All Weather Project” by Liz Roche. Movement sections are indicated by italics. \ud \ud “I am going to start by dancing for you…\ud \ud Movement: Live performance of solo approximately 10 minutes in duration\ud \ud This is the introduction...\ud \ud Through my PhD research, I am examining the choreographic process from the perspective of the independent contemporary dancer, through embodying this role as a researcher/participant. My methodological frameworks, which utilise video documentation and journal writing, could be characterised as ethnographic, multi-modal embodied theorising, leading to “multi-dimensional theorising” (I adopt this term from Susan Melrose). In this way, I am unwinding the embodied practice of dancing, through the co-existent layers of experience, towards forming a theoretical understanding of the issues that arise for the dancer. The issues that I have identified as relevant to my research are those relating to the dancer’s ‘moving identity’ or way of moving, as a mutable and adaptable form that must alter and re-adjust to each different choreographic engram or movement vocabulary, that she/he encounters. I am examining this interplay between stability and change. I also reflect on the impact of destabilisation and flux on the dancer’s identity in a wider sense, as she/he relates outwardly to signifying factors within the social strata. Today I am going to bring you through a reflection on the working process of a dance piece as experienced from the inside. By doing so, I hope to capture and elucidate the multi-dimensional layers which existed for me within this process. Through displaying these fragments together, I endeavour to invoke the ‘totality’ of the experience..

US Importation of Tree Tomatoes from Ecuador: How to Improve the Import/Export Process?

    No full text
The tree tomato is a fruit which originated in the semitropical high altitude Andes forest of Ecuador, and it has a lot of nutrients necessary for the body. The purpose of this study was to improve the process of importing tree tomatoes to the US following the import regulations. In order to answer the research question, the researcher sought the insight and counsel of industry experts through interviews, to learn and understand actions they have taken on real life cases and receive knowledgeable suggestions they have on how to improve the process of the tree tomato’s importation to the US. Results of the data collection indicated that the tree tomato crop needs to be controlled with crop management, and needs to follow regulations that allow the tree tomato to be imported to the US. The conclusion from the brief Literature Review, and results of the subjects’ responses indicated that in order for the tree tomato to be imported to the US, it must be grown with the best pest control management which is a requirement for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS). Based on the project’s conclusions and the researcher’s professional knowledge, the researcher recommends that tree tomato producers from Ecuador should implement a pest control management to allow the three tomato be imported to the US with help of the different agencies, such as the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGAP)’s Agrocalidad, Livestock Undersecretariat, or Commercialization Undersecretariat institutions Agrocalidad from Ecuador and the USDA from the US.Metropolitan School of Professional Studies, Master of Science in Management, Capstone Project, 2018

Mobile App Development: The Use of Apache Cordova to Construct Features for iOS and Android Applications

    No full text
abstract: Mobile app development has been the fastest growing software development since the release of the iPhone in 2007 and the creation of the App Store in 2008. After the rise in popularity of the smartphone and mobile app development, businesses started to shift from browser-based software to mobile platforms. There are multiple reasons that any company would want to reach out in the mobile environment, including attracting new customers, creating a better experience, expanding their brand, being more accessible, and overall growth. Developers started to build new platforms that would make it easy for not only their own company but anyone else to develop new applications at a faster pace. Today there are three different ways to create a mobile application: a native app, a hybrid app, and a web app. At DriveTime, we spent time researching and developing possible options for how we could make a mobile application to expand our user involvement. Our conclusion was to use a hybrid application that would incorporate our already existing web app and relaunch it as a native app. I took over this project for DriveTime and planned to implement two new features for their mobile application. Using Apache Cordova, I dived into the Software Development Life Cycle to create and deploy a Rate and Review feature and Push Notification functionality. In the end, I was only able to implement the Rate and Review feature due to some unexpected delays in development. I assumed all roles of a standard Agile development team to understand all of the different aspects that go into planning, creating, and publishing software
