A Transfer Report on the Development of a Framework to Evaluate Search Interfaces for their Support of Different User Types and Search Tactics

    No full text
As the understanding of search systems, user needs and seeking strategies is developing, the design of search user interfaces is evolving to support more complicated and exploratory forms of search. With the design of new search features that enable these richer modes of exploration, comes the need to better understand the support they provide. In this report a new evaluation framework is presented that analyses search features for how they a) contribute to an overall interface, b) allow users to carry out different search tactics, and c) support different types of users and their needs. The novel contributions of the framework improve on some of the limitations of typical user studies, and allow search systems to be systematically analysed in much more detail and in much less time. The presented evaluation framework is then validated in three ways. First the validity of the models used as the building blocks of the framework are investigated through related work. Second the method of integrating these building-block models is validated and strengthened by consensus of expert opinion. Third, the overall approach is validated by comparing its analyses to the results of previously carried out user studies. The validation process has shown both the value of the framework and identified areas of future work that should be addressed for the framework to be completed. This report concludes with the set of contributions that the framework makes, and why the remaining work will be challenging, but critical to the final design

Inky: A Sloppy Command Line for the Web with Rich Visual Feedback

    No full text
We present Inky, a command line for shortcut access to common web tasks. Inky aims to capture the efficiency benefits of typed commands while mitigating their usability problems. Inky commands have little or no new syntax to learn, and the system displays rich visual feedback while the user is typing, including missing parameters and con- textual information automatically clipped from the target web site. Inky is an example of a new kind of hybrid be- tween a command line and a GUI interface. We describe the design and implementation of two prototypes of this idea, and report the results of a field study

Nonlinear and nonparametric modeling approaches for probabilistic forecasting of the US gross national product

    No full text
Numerous time series models are available for forecasting economic output. Autoregressive models were initially applied to US gross national product (GNP), and have been extended to nonlinear structures, such as the self-exciting threshold autoregressive (SETAR) and Markov-switching autoregressive (MS-AR) models. We show that while these nonlinear models fit the in-sample data better than linear models, the out-of-sample forecast performance of extremely simple methods, such as the unconditional mean is competitive compared with both previously published linear and nonlinear models for GNP time series. Motivated by Occam′s razor and the forecasting competitiveness of the unconditional mean, we seek parsimonious models which are based on simple assumptions, incorporate few parameters, and can generate accurate forecasts. We propose nonlinear and nonparametric models based on nearest neighbor and kernel regression by forming a state-space of time delayed GNP observations. The rationale of the proposed methodology lies in identification of local regions of state-space known as nearest neighbor sub-spaces, whereby we utilize future trajectories of the neighboring states and weight them using a double kernel estimator to generate density forecasts. The models proposed in this work incorporate only one or two parameters, and the model estimation framework relies on optimizing the performance of in-sample density forecasts. The proposed modeling approach does not require prior assumptions regarding the form of the error distribution, and can provide transition between regimes of growth and contraction. We compare the forecasts from proposed models with classical time series models for GNP and a range of benchmarks, and validate our results on two post-war GNP time series using different performance scores, such as the root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and the continuous ranked probability score (CRPS). We find that proposed models consistently outperformed previously published models for point and density forecasts of GNP at varying horizons

GRAPL: A computational library for nonparametric structural causal modelling, analysis and inference

    No full text
Structural causal models (SCMs) provide a probabilistic language for describing directed relationships between random variables. SCMs are widely used in science and engineering to capture causal relationships between quantitative, measured phenomena in the real world. Two SCM formalisms, directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) and acyclic directed mixed graphs (ADMGs) have been extensively studied. In these formalisms, the conditions under which causal dependence between variables occurs is well understood. Furthermore, analytical techniques have been developed which allow manipulation of the model so as to perform causal adjustment, that is, the isolation of desired causal relationships from the SCM. The GRAPL library brings together the most important and useful of such algorithms in one convenient software package. Using this library it is possible to represent, analyze and manipulate DAGs and ADMGs of arbitrary complexity.https://github.com/max-little/GRAP

Consumer Smartwatches for Collecting Self-Report and Sensor Data:App Design and Engagement

    No full text
Longitudinal data from patients' natural environments would benefit chronic disease care, yet most devices cannot collect sensor data alongside patient-reported outcomes. Here we describe Koalap, a consumer cellular smartwatch application that collects patient-reported outcomes alongside physical activity data from various sensors. Additionally, we show preliminary results indicating high engagement of our 26 participants with knee osteoarthritis. Our future work will show whether data collection with consumer smartwatches is feasible in terms of user engagement, acceptability, data quality and consistency.</p

Real-time collaborative coding in a web IDE

    No full text
This paper describes Collabode, a web-based Java integrated development environment designed to support close, synchronous collaboration between programmers. We examine the problem of collaborative coding in the face of program compilation errors introduced by other users which make collaboration more difficult, and describe an algorithm for error-mediated integration of program code. Concurrent editors see the text of changes made by collaborators, but the errors reported in their view are based only on their own changes. Editors may run the program at any time, using only error-free edits supplied so far, and ignoring incomplete or otherwise error-generating changes. We evaluate this algorithm and interface on recorded data from previous pilot experiments with Collabode, and via a user study with student and professional programmers. We conclude that it offers appreciable benefits over naive continuous synchronization without regard to errors and over manual version control.National Science Foundation (U.S.) (award IIS- 0447800

On a generalization of power algorithms over max-plus algebra

    No full text
In this paper we discuss a generalization of power algorithms over max-plus algebra. We are interested in finding such a generalization starting from various existing power algorithms. The resulting algorithm can be used to determine the so-called generalized eigenmode of any square regular matrix over max-plus algebra. In particular, the algorithm can be applied in the case of regular reducible matrices in which the existing power algorithms can not be used to compute eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors.Accepted Author ManuscriptMathematical Physic

The issue of political leadership in Max Weber got the paramount importance for the understanding of all the work by this author. This study aims at examining this issue from the perspective of the weberian concept of qualified political leadership. Primarily aims at comparing the quality of political leadership in social classes. Secondly ascertain the institutional qualification for political leadership. Finally, this study aims to verify the individual qualities listed by Max Weber. Having mainly in his militant’s works the concepts of ethics of conviction (Gesinnungsethik) and ethics of responsibility (Verantwortungsethik) as the main ideal types in professional ethics as the spirit of Western capitalism. Max Weber believes that is the political heritage and consequently leading education policy the frameworks for understanding the topic in question
