Heuristics for container loading of furniture
We consider a container loading problem that occurs at a typical furniture manufacturer. Each furniture item has an associated profit. Given container dimensions and a set of furniture items, the problem is to determine a subset of items with maximal profit sum that is loadable in the container. In the studied company, the problem arises hundreds of times daily during transport planning. Instances may contain more than one hundred different items with irregular shapes. To solve this complex problem we apply a set of heuristics successively that each solve one part of the problem. Large items are combined in specific structures to ensure proper protection of the items during transportation and to simplify the problem. The solutions generated by the heuristic has an average loading utilization of 91.3% for the most general instances with average running times around 100 seconds.</p
A Case Study for the Deactivation and Regeneration of a V2O5-WO3/TiO2 Catalyst in a Tail-End SCR Unit of a Municipal Waste Incineration Plant
In this work, we set out to investigate the deactivation of a commercial V2O5-WO3/TiO2 monolith catalyst that operated for a total of 18,000 h in a selective catalytic reduction unit treating the exhaust gases of a municipal waste incinerator in a tail end configuration. Extensive physical and chemical characterization analyses were performed comparing results for fresh and aged catalyst samples. The nature of poisoning species was determined with regards to their impact on the DeNOx catalytic activity which was experimentally evaluated through catalytic tests in the temperature range 90–500 °C at a gas hourly space velocity of 100,000 h−1 (NO = NH3 = 400 ppmv, 6% O2). Two simple regeneration strategies were also investigated: thermal treatment under static air at 400–450 °C and water washing at room temperature. The effectiveness of each treatment was determined on the basis of its ability to remove specific poisoning compounds and to restore the original performance of the virgin catalyst
The Refurbishement of former Remand Home “E. Gianturco” in Avigliano (Potenza, Italy), upgrading its seismic resistance and transforming it in a nZEB Elderly People and Social House
The Remand Home "E. Gianturco" in Avigliano (Potenza, Italy) was built between 1904 and 1935, expanding the existing ancient Reformed Franciscan Friars’ Monastery, found-ed in 1615. It is a great building, designed to house 400 prisoners, whose central body, on four levels, is organized according to the "cubicular" prototype modeled on the Auburn jail (New York, 1825). The 1980 earthquake damaged the bearing structures and led to the gradual abandonment of the building, until the final closure between 1985 and 1997. At present, the building is owned by the Borough and is abandoned. Given its position close to the ancient part of the city, a study was carried out on the possibility of re-use it as a Social Housing and RSA (Sanitary Housing for Elder People), very important activities for the social revitalization of the city. By eliminating the cubicles, the double spaces they face have been closed, new main inside walls have been introduced, and some arches have been closed. When the seismic vulnerability has been verified after the planned modifications, the building is now substantially reinforced. A completely new layout was drawn up, in accordance with the original configuration, introducing the necessary new vertical connections and services. A thick non-combustible thermal insulation from the outside, new high-performance fixtures, a Controlled Mechanical Ventilation (CMV) sys-tem with heat recovery and dehumidification and a new high efficiency generator have been provided. Vertical axis wind turbines, arranged at a suitable distance and inserted in the new design of the large square in front of the building and on the rear front, provide energy renewable and available on site for 60% of what the building needs for its opera-tion. The building becomes a nZEB, with EPgl, nren = 55.722 kWh/m2 year. The colors and finishes provided are the original ones, rediscovered by surveys carried out on site
“Dialogue between Translators and Authors. The Example of Claudio Magris”
The paper focuses on the forms of cooperation between authors and their translator(s) in all cases in which the two operate simultaneously. This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators.
Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange
Consideraciones sobre la poética de Claudio Rodríguez
The purpose of this paper is to study the poetics of Claudio Rodríguez, delimiting its components and trying to clarify them and to present them as a whole. The author left some pages written on his conception of poetry that encourage reflection and, in some cases, interpretation. So with his conception of poetry as a gift and inebriation, as an alliance and condemnation or celebration (giving title to his collections of poems), or with notions such as «participation», «living contemplation», «living expression » or «personal rhythm» that make up his way of understanding the poetic process.
Role of thyroglobulin in the pathogenesis of Graves’ ophthalmopathy: the hypothesis of Kriss revisited
One of the hypothesis to explain the pathogenesis of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) was formulated by Joseph P. Kriss in the early 1970s. He postulated that the initiating event in the pathogenesis of GO is the deposition and accumulation of thyroglobulin (Tg) in orbital tissues, followed by an autoimmune reaction against Tg. In the last 30 yrs several studies have addressed this hypothesis, through various, different experimental approaches, raising results that are both in favor and against the possibility that Tg plays a role in the pathogenesis of GO. The finding that intact Tg is present in orbital tissues of GO patients supports Kriss' hypothesis, although the role of Tg as an autoantigen seems to be unlikely, as GO is not significantly associated with serum TgAb and mice immunized with Tg do not develop GO. Whether Tg is indeed involved in the pathogenesis of GO remains to be established. Our current view is that, provided that Tg plays a role, it is unlikely the only factor involved and Tg in orbital tissues may rather reinforce or worsen a damage initiated by other mechanisms
