We use a simplified gene regulation model with a time-dependent input signal to illustrate many concepts, including ODE analyses of deterministic processes; chemical master equation and finite-state projection analyses of heterogeneous processes; and stochastic simulations. We consider several model hypotheses and simulated single-cell data to illustrate mechanism and parameter identification as precisely as possible, while exploring how approach or experiment design affect parameter uncertainty. Our approach is based upon previous investigations to explore signal-activated gene expression models in yeast and human cells
Ground based 2 DoF test for LISA and LISA pathfinder: A status report.
On-ground tests are required to study the couplings between LISA test masses and the spacecraft that host them. In order to study couplings that might act between two ore more degrees of freedom in measuring the position and acting on the position of each test mass, a many degrees of freedom facility is needed. Here we present the status of our new 2 DoF double torsion pendulum, that will be used to test LISA Gravitational Reference Sensor (GRS) on the ground
Modelling the speciation and biogeochemistry of iron in oceanic surface waters at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study site
By means of numerical modelling the cycling of iron between its various physical (dissolved, colloidal, particulate) and chemical (redox state and organic complexation) forms in the upper mixed layer of the ocean is analysed. Using the model an initial quantitative assessment is made of how this cycling influences iron uptake by phytoplankton and its loss via particulate export. The model is forced with observed dust deposition rates, mixed layer depths, and solar radiation at the site of the Bermuda Atlantic Timeseries Study (BATS). It contains an optimised ecosystem model which yields results close to the observational data from BATS.Firstly, the results of a zero-dimensional model approach show that the mixed layer cycle strongly influences the cycling of iron between its various forms. This was mainly attributed to the light dependency of photoreductive processes and to the seasonality of primary production. The daily photochemical cycle is driven primarily by the production of superoxide and its amplitude depends on the concentration and speciation of dissolved copper. Model results are largely insensitive to the dominant form of dissolved iron introduced via dust deposition, and also to the form of iron that is taken up directly during algal growth. In the model solutions, the role of the colloidal pumping mechanism depends strongly on assumptions made regarding rates of colloid aggregation and photoreduction rate.Secondly, a one-dimensional approach of the model is coupled with the General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM). The combined model was able to simulate the temporal patterns and vertical profiles of dissolved iron in the upper ocean at the BATS site reasonably well. Subsurface model profiles depended strongly on the parameter values chosen for loss processes affecting iron, colloidal aggregation and scavenging onto particles. Current estimates for these parameters result in depletion of dFe. A high stability constant of iron-binding organic ligands is required to reproduce the observed degree of organic complexation below the mixed layer. Solubility of atmospherically deposited iron higher than 2% leads to dissolved iron concentrations higher than observations. Despite neglecting ultraviolet radiation, the model produces diurnal variations and mean vertical profiles of dFe which are in good agreement with observations

Nano-Newton electrostatic force actuators for femto-Newton-sensitive measurements: System performance test in the LISA Pathfinder mission
LISA Pathfinder Collaboration: et al.Electrostatic force actuation is a key component of the system of geodesic reference test masses (TM) for the LISA orbiting gravitational wave observatory and in particular for performance at low frequencies, below 1 mHz, where the observatory sensitivity is limited by stray force noise. The system needs to apply forces of order 10−9 N while limiting fluctuations in the measurement band to levels approaching 10−15 N/Hz1/2. We present here the LISA actuation system design, based on audio-frequency voltage carrier signals, and results of its in-flight performance test with the LISA Pathfinder test mission. In LISA, TM force actuation is used to align the otherwise free-falling TM to the spacecraft-mounted optical metrology system, without any forcing along the critical gravitational wave-sensitive interferometry axes. In LISA Pathfinder, on the other hand, the actuation was used also to stabilize the TM along the critical axis joining the two TM, with the commanded actuation force entering directly into the mission’s main differential acceleration science observable. The mission allowed demonstration of the full compatibility of the electrostatic actuation system with the LISA observatory requirements, including dedicated measurement campaigns to amplify, isolate, and quantify the two main force noise contributions from the actuation system, from actuator gain noise and from low frequency “in band” voltage fluctuations. These campaigns have shown actuation force noise to be a relevant, but not dominant, noise source in LISA Pathfinder and have allowed performance projections for the conditions expected in the LISA mission. This work has been made possible by the LISA Pathfinder mission, which is part of the space-science program of the European Space Agency.
The issue of political leadership in Max Weber got the paramount importance for the understanding of all the work by this author. This study aims at examining this issue from the perspective of the weberian concept of qualified political leadership. Primarily aims at comparing the quality of political leadership in social classes. Secondly ascertain the institutional qualification for political leadership. Finally, this study aims to verify the individual qualities listed by Max Weber. Having mainly in his militant’s works the concepts of ethics of conviction (Gesinnungsethik) and ethics of responsibility (Verantwortungsethik) as the main ideal types in professional ethics as the spirit of Western capitalism. Max Weber believes that is the political heritage and consequently leading education policy the frameworks for understanding the topic in question
