New record of Abralia (Heterabralia) siedleckyi Lipinski, 1983 (Cephalopoda: Enoploteuthidae) from south-eastern Arabian Sea with some remarks about its biology

    No full text
Specimens of oceanic squid, Abralia (Heterabralia) siedleckyi Lipinski, 1983 were collected from the south-eastern Arabian Sea using midwater trawl (horizontally at 200 m depth) during night operations in two cruises on 18 April 2015 and 26 February 2017. Description and morphological measurements of the specimens are provided. The record of this mesopelagic squid from the Arabian Sea is an addition to the cephalopod fauna of the Indian Ocean and India. The statolith based age analysis indicates that a 29.1 mm dorsal mantle length specimen had 93 day’s age with a growth rate of 0.31 mm DML/day

Methods for the validation of squid age from statoliths

    No full text
Growth laminations were first noted in squid statoliths by Clarke (1966), who suggested they might be useful for age determination. Spratt (1978) presented a detailed age analysis of Loligo opalescens Berry, 1911, arguing that some rings in the cephalopod statolith were deposited daily, as are fish otoliths (Panella, 1971). Growth rings in Illex illecebrosus (Lesueur, 1921) statoliths were illustrated by Lipinski (1978) with similar interpretation to that of Spratt (op. cit.). Several further attempts have been made to validate and/or to discuss age determination from statoliths (Hurley, Drew & Radtke, 1979; Hurley et al. 1983; Wiborg, 1979; Hurley & Beck, 1980; Kristensen, 1980; Lipinski, 1980, 1981; Rosenberg, Wiborg & Bech, 1981; Martins, 1982; Radtke, 1983; Dawe et al. 1984), and several other attempts are in preparation (R. J. Hanlon, G. V. Hurley, M. R. Clarke & R. L. Radtke, personal communications)

White Rabbit clock synchronization: ultimate limits on close-in phase noise and short-term stability due to FPGA implementation

    No full text
This paper investigates the ultimate limits of White Rabbit (WR), an high-accuracy time distribution system based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The knowledge of such limits is essential for new emerging applications that are evaluating WR. In this paper, we identify and study the key elements in the WR synchronization: the digital dual mixer time difference phase detector and the Gigabit Ethernet transceiver. The benchmarks and experimental analysis of these key elements allow us to determine the WR switch (WRS) performance limits and evaluate their evolution with newer FPGAs. The identified performance limits are achievable by the present-day generation of WRS. The ultimate limits of short-term synchronization performance due to FPGA implementation have been derived through analysis and then demonstrated using the existing WRS enhanced with an additional daughterboard. This combination (WRS and daughterboard) achieves a tenfold improvement in terms of phase noise, jitter, and short-term stability with respect to the current WR performance. Both phase detectors and Gigabit transceivers have a similar phase noise contribution equal to a short-term stability of modified Allan deviation 4E−13 at τ=1\tau = 1 s (dominated by flicker phase modulation noise)
