Ausgangspunkt des Films bildet das kulturhistorisch wertvolle topografische Relief mit dem Aletschgletscher im Mittelpunkt. Dieses wurde vor über 200 Jahren vom Schweizer Topografen und Reliefbauer Joachim Eugen Müller (1752–1833) für die Berliner Kunstkammer geschaffen und befindet sich heute im Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss. Es handelt sich um das einzige erhaltene Teilstück des Alpenreliefs, das einst aus zehn Einzelteilen bestand und zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts eine bedeutende Attraktion in der Berliner Kunstkammer darstellte. Müller hat mit viel Liebe zum Detail die Berglandschaft maßstabsgetreu und nahezu exakt abgebildet. Im Film werden Details am Relief gezeigt und deren landschaftsformende Bedeutung erläutert. Das heutige Erscheinungsbild der Alpen ist maßgeblich durch die Vergletscherung in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart geprägt. Der größte alpine Gletscher ist der Aletschgletscher im Schweizer Kanton Wallis. Obwohl seine Ausdehnung und Mächtigkeit nach wie vor beeindrucken, lässt sich an ihm auch der menschgemachte Klimawandel unmittelbar ablesen. Diese Veränderungen in der Landschaft werden im Film in eindrucksvoller Weise präsentiert. Insbesondere der in den letzten 200 Jahren zu verzeichnende Anstieg der Temperatur manifestiert sich eindrücklich in dem beschleunigten Abschmelzen der alpinen Gletscher. Die Folgen für Menschen und Natur sind schon heute fundamental. Müllers Relief veranschaulicht die Situation vor dem Beginn der Industrialisierung und damit vor dem menschgemachten Klimawandel. Der Film vermittelt die Erkenntnis, dass die Folgen des Klimawandels eine Realität darstellen, die es gilt sichtbar, erfahrbar und verständlich zu machen. Er verdeutlicht, dass Kultur und Natur keine Gegensätze, sondern sich gegenseitig beeinflussende Sphären auf unserer Erde sind. It was created over 200 years ago by the Swiss topographer and relief artist Joachim Eugen Müller (1752-1833) for the Berlin Kunstkammer, the Cabinet of Curiosities in der Berlin Palace, and is now in the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace. It is the only remaining part of the Alpine relief, which once consisted of ten individual parts and was a major attraction in the Berlin Kunstkammer at the beginning of the 19th century. Müller has reproduced the mountain landscape in great detail, true to scale and almost exactly. In the video, details of the relief are shown and their landscape-shaping significance is explained. The current appearance of the Alps is largely shaped by past and present glaciation. The largest Alpine glacier is the Aletsch Glacier in the Swiss canton of Valais. Although its extent and thickness are still impressive, it also provides a direct indication of human-induced climate change. The changes to the landscape are impressively presented in the film. In particular, the rise in temperature recorded over the last 200 years is clearly manifested in the accelerated melting of Alpine glaciers. The consequences for people and nature are already fundamental today. Müller's relief illustrates the situation before the onset of industrialisation and thus before human-induced climate change. The video communicates the insight that the consequences of climate change are a reality that needs to be made visible, tangible and understandable. It emphasizes that culture and nature are not in opposition, but are mutually influencing spheres on our planet. The first such assessment since 2005, it concludes that biodiversity and ecosystem loss has reached the point where it threatens human well-being.     Tackling the Climate Crisis: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Climate Change Education and Communication

    Despite high levels of public awareness about anthropogenic climate change and increasing pressure on the political sphere, climate action among large parts of the general public still remains relatively low. However, climate strikes and demonstrations with ten thousand of predominantly young participants in the recent past may have uncovered new drivers, processes, and forms of individual as well as collective engagement with climate change. So what are the individual and societal preconditions, factors, and mechanisms that facilitate or prevent action on climate change among different segments of the population? And what are the potentials and limitations for climate change education and communication efforts? Here, various disciplines within the educational, psychological, social and climate sciences, as well as humanities can provide the theoretical and practical instruments to understand public engagement with climate change. This session aims to provide multiple perspectives into the challenges and opportunities of climate change communication and education. Inviting contributions from a broad range of disciplines (e.g., education, psychology, communication, public understanding of science, humanities, social and natural sciences), this session focuses on the perception, processing, communication, application, learning, and education of climate information and knowledge. Talks or posters may relate to all approaches (e.g., theoretical and practical, quantitative and qualitative), scales (i.e. local, national, global), and age levels (e.g., children, adolescents, adults). We encourage contributions from young scientists (Master- or PhD-projects), while interdisciplinary projects are especially welcomed too

    Between 1917 and 1918, the Austro-Hungarian author Andreas Latzko (1876-1943) wrote three separate publications against the Great War: Menschen im Krieg (1917), Friedensgericht (1918), and Der letzte Mann (published 1919). Literary historians tend to bypass these works, and the few who note them chiefly focus on the best-selling novella cycle Menschen im Krieg (1917). It is usually presented as an example of expressionist political prose, or as a mixture of social satire and aesthetic shock-tactics that chiefly remains indebted to realist traditions, albeit with occasional incursions into expressionistic styles..

    The New Swiss Glacier Inventory SGI2016: From a Topographical to a Glaciological Dataset

    Glaciers in Switzerland are shrinking rapidly in response to ongoing climate change. Repeated glacier inventories are key to monitor such changes at the regional scale. Here we present the new Swiss Glacier Inventory 2016 (SGI2016) that has been acquired based on sub-meter resolution aerial imagery and digital elevation models, bringing together topographical and glaciological approaches and knowledge. We define the process, workflow and required glaciological adaptations to compile a highly detailed inventory based on the digital Swiss Topographic Landscape model. The SGI2016 provides glacier outlines (areas), supraglacial debris cover and ice divides for all Swiss glaciers referring to the years 2013–2018. The SGI2016 maps 1,400 individual glacier entities with a total surface area of 961 ± 22 km2, whereof 11% (104 km2) are debris-covered. It constitutes the so far most detailed cartographic representation of glacier extent in Switzerland. Interpretation in the context of topographic parameters indicates that glaciers with moderate inclination and low median elevation tend to have highest fractions of supraglacial debris. Glacier-specific area changes since 1973 show the largest relative changes for small and low-elevation glaciers. The analysis further indicates a tendency for glaciers with a high share of supraglacial debris to show larger relative area changes. Between 1973 and 2016, an area change rate of –0.6% a−1 is found. Based on operational data sets and the presented methodology, the Swiss Glacier Inventory will be updated in 6- yr time intervals, leading to a high consistency in future glacier change assessments
